Thanks for your response. I should have made my question a little more clear. It is my understanding that you can not restore a phone from a backup with a different IOS version. IOS 8 will not load on to an iPhone 4.
So the situation is this... An iPhone 4 backup on my Mac with 7.1.2. My iPhone 6 Plus will be here on Friday and be preloaded with IOS 8. Will I be able to restore the backup of 7.1.2 onto the iPhone 6?
The iOS on the source device (iPhone 4 in your case) has to be equal to or less than the iOS version on the target device (iPhone 6 in your case).
You can't restore the other way around
A related question: Is there potentially any problem (compatibility, lost data) in restoring from 7.1.1 or 7.1.2 to 8? For example, if you have an older iPhone whose storage is stuffed too full to easily upgrade to 8 before restoring its backup to the new device that's already running 8?
No problem. I recently did similar with iPhone 4S>iPhone 6+
You just provided the same link that I provided three weeks ago:

Just wanted to follow up on this. Confirmed that going from 7.1.1 (iPhone 5s) to 8.0 (iPhone 6) did not cause any data loss (other than saved VMs, which is standard). The only things that got lost were about six applications, but those were easy to reinstall (with user-specific settings and history intact) from iCloud.
