Handoff doesn't work

Hi there,

I just updated my iPhone 5 and my iPad mini (retina) to iOS 8.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is on. I'm signed in with my Apple ID on both devices. iCloud is enabled, Handoff in the (General) settings is activated as well.

The thing is, handoff doesn't work. When I open "Mail" or "Calender" for example it doesn't show this little icon on the lower right corner. What am I missing here?

(By the way: why the **** is there no full photo stream in iOS 8? Just the last few pictures. That ***** big time...)

Wah-lah?!!

-Voilà is a French borrowing into English that has mostly retained is Francophonic pronunciation: \vwä-ˈlä\, or \vwah-LAH\. It is clear that the \v\ in the pronunciation of voilà is sometimes not heard, and this, combined with the mismatch between voilà’s spelling and pronunciation, has led to a number of misspellings of the word based on its pronunciation. We have seen evidence for vwa-lah, vwah-la, wa-lah, wa-la, wah-lah, wallah, and even viola (for those who remember the letters in the word, if not the particular order of them). While these misspellings are more common in informal writing, we have started seeing them in newspapers and other edited sources as well. The correct spelling is voilà: if you have a hard time remembering how to spell it, you can use the mnemonic that voilàvery often is misspelled.

I was struggling to figure this out as I was having the exact same issue. I had bluetooth and WiFi on my iPad 4 and iPhone 5, yet Handoff wouldn't work. I then thought about AirDrop. I popped up the notification center on each of my devices and set AirDrop to everyone. Wah lah, Handoff works!

After this I went ahead and installed the beta of Yosemite. Hand off worked there too. I then experimented with turning Bluetooth off on my phone and mac to see if it was really necessary as I read someone had success without bluetooth. Well it stopped working. I turned Bluetooth back on and now my iPhone can Handoff to my mac but not vice versa. That last bit was irrelevant to your issue but I hope setting AirDrop on your devices helps you.

***One more note, one quirk I don't like about Handoff is that the device you want to handoff from must not be locked. I feel like this defies the whole purpose. If I am composing an email on my phone in bed when I wake, and then put my phone down and lock it because my stomach is demanding breakfast (as was the case today) I want to be able to pop up the iPad which is in the dining area and continue my work. If I can only use Handoff while the phone is unlocked I may as well just bring it out with me. Dang first world problems.

Do you also have the "Suggested Apps" options turned on as well? According to Apple Insider:

Additional Continuity features in iOS 8 are available by enabling the "Handoff" feature. Users can do this by opening the Settings application, choosing General, and then selecting "Handoff & Suggested Apps."

"Handoff lets you start something on one device and instantly pick it up on other devices using your iCloud account," Apple's description reads. "The app you need appears in the lock screen, app switcher, and the dock on a Mac."

Not sure what specific feature of Handoff is not working for you, but the examples they show of picking up on a website via Safari from one device to another, and continuing a Message between two devices, indicates that all three buttons on that page are turned on. Here is the link:

Unfortunately this didn't work either. Enabled AirDrop for everybody on both devices but still... Handoff doesn't work.

@gail from maine

"Suggested Apps" is turned on as well. By now, almost everything in iOS 8 is turned on.

Maaaan, this is really annyoing. I never had such problems with any Apple release of any software. iOS 8 is such a bad update. There are not too many groundbreaking features but those they were teasing so much don't even work. This is ridiculous.
