Photos out of order in Events after iOS 8 update

I have an iPhone 5s that I just updated to iOS 8. I sync photos from my Aperture library on my Mac, which show up as a "Events From My Mac" album under "Albums" in the Photos app on my iPhone. In iOS 7 and before, events synced from Aperture would show in reverse chronological order, which made sense. Upon updating to iOS 8, all the events are in a random order. I have events from 2008, followed by 2010, then 2009, then 2012, then 2008, etc...

Has anyone else run into this issue? I know that I'll probably have to resort to telling iTunes to stop syncing photos, delete the "iPod Photo Sync" folder from inside the Aperture package, then re-sync all the photos, but before I go through all that trouble, I was hoping someone might have an easy fix.

This appears to be one of those changes that all the reviewers appear to have not noticed!

I use the photos app a lot and having the order "randomised" and the slowness of scrolling through all the photo events was just a massive deal breaker for me (unless someone can point us in the direction of a decent ad-free replacement photo library app).

After 24 hours i ended up restoring both my ipad mini and ipod touch back down to 7.1.2. It meant wiping everything off the devices (it's a restoration to factory settings) but it was worth it. Reloaded my photos overnight and everything is working again.

This is risky as if you load the wrong file (like i did on the ipod touch) or if Apple have stopped authorising 7.1.2, then you could end up with a headache trying to get your device going again. You do not need to Jailbreak to do this

I've had a variation on this problem with every iOS update for the last 3-4 years. Usually I'm able to correct it after some combination of removing photos, re-syncing, repairing iPhoto Library permissions, rebuilding the iPhoto Library (those last two can be done by holding down command+option then opening the iPhoto application on your Mac).

I've tried all my tricks this year and none have worked. I'm concerned that respecting iPhoto organization when photos are synced to iOS is a low priority at Apple as they move all iOS devices (and Macs) to their new iCloud Library photo solution. To that end, I'm really concerned there will never be a fix for this particular issue, because in a few months' time Apple expects all users to adopt the new photo workflow to manage their libraries on iOS and OS X.

Today I found a work-around I thought I'd share. There's an app called PhotoSync for wirelessly managing the transfer of photos to/from iOS devices to/from all kinds of sources like iPhoto, Finder, Dropbox, Flikr, FTP, etc. It's a $2.99 app on the App Store, with a free Mac utility on the Mac App Store. I downloaded it hoping it could completely replace iPhoto/iTunes as my photo syncing solution on iOS while iOS 8 makes it such a headache.

When I opened the iOS app on my 5S, I discovered that PhotoSync shows you all the photos on your phone except they're all properly ordered.

That is, all of my Albums, Events, and Faces that had been synced from iPhoto using iTunes were represented in this app and unlike in iOS 8 Photos they were properly ordered by name (in the case of the Faces and Albums) and by date in reverse chronological order (which is exactly how I have my Events sorted in iPhoto).

I know a $3 app isn't a great "solution" but for me it was well worth the money to have an app I can open that has all of my photos organized exactly how I want them. I buried iOS 8 Photos in a folder and moved PhotoSync to my home screen; I'll be using it to interact with my photo library until there's an update to iOS 8 that fixes this annoying bug.

npsnyder,

You the man! what an awesome temporary solution to a major issue. I have over 30,000 photos meticulously organized in aperture in a way that perfectly synced to my iOS devices up until I installed iOS 8.

I am sure an Apple fix is on the way- but at least now I am not stressing out over it. I actually enjoy navigating around the PhotoSync app at least as much and maybe even more than the native photo app.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Here we go again. I had this problem back with iOS 6 and it was never fixed with a .x update. However it WAS fixed when I upgraded to iOS 7. Now on iOS 8 it's back and it will probably never be fixed. I submitted feedback to Apple, but I doubt it will be touched. I attempted to remove the iPod Photo Cache folder in the iPhoto Library package to have it rebuild the iPad sized photos and this changed the order of photos on my iPad to something different...but nowhere near where it should be. I really wish I could understand why sorting by date is such a complicated thing for Apple...this is basic functionality!! Forget about all of the bells and whistles if they can't get this right.
