IOS 8 Can't access control center from home screen

After updating to IOS 8, I can no longer access the control center by swiping up from the home screen. I can only access it from the lock screen. I have tried with the setting "access control center from apps" both on and off. Swiping up doesn't work except on the lock screen. Not on home nor in any apps. I can only get to control center by locking the phone (power button, then home), then I can swipe up.

I miss quick access to the calculator and do not disturb buttons.

iPhone 5s, iOS 8

"However, another fix that we’ve seen involves turning off the “Zoom” feature that’s located in the Accessibility menu in the Settings app. A couple of users had this feature turned on randomly, but once they turned it off, they were able to access Control Center just fine."

I found a solution/workaround to this. I'm thinking it has to do with TouchID, since you slightly touch the TouchID sensor when you start the swipe. When I can't access the Control Center, I have the TouchID scan a finger I have not registered. Once it fails, my ability to swipe up to get the Control Center is restored. This is much easier than restarting the phone.

This swipe up issue has just happened to me so I turned to the geeks. You lot. You've been most useful, well mostly. Thanks for the hints on the annoying little bug. I think I've found the solution! (A bit too early to be definite(just fixed 5mins ago)). I like using zoom so didn't want to turn it off. All I did was play with the zoom. With zoom function turned on { in settings>General>Accessibility>Zoom> slide to 'on' at top of screen } I returned to home screen, double tapped screen with three fingers. The Rectangular zoom lens appears. I touched tiny tab at bottom of lens, choose filter, picked inverted, picked resize lens, dragged around 'drag balls' to change size of lens, touched outside of lens to stop resizing, double tapped screen with three fingers and hey presto; slide up and slide down function is back and I can still use my beloved zoom feature.

I hope I've found the solution. I'm feeling quite pleased with myself. I'm new to posting on forums. Can you tell? I hope this works for someone else.

I have had this problem with my iTouch 5. I am also using a case (i-Blason ArmorBox Hybrid 3 Layer Defender Case, without the screen protector), which may prevent my finger from fully touching the bottom edge of the screen. However, I found that the problem goes away if I firmly start my up-swipe from off the screen, and I did not need to remove the case. Thanks for your suggestions.
