iPad 2 iOS 8 update resulted in device stuck on Apple logo with almost discharged battery.

Initiated iOS 8 update on iPad 2 last night at 6p. This morning, I find it stuck on the Apple logo, no progress bar. Screen cycles between the logo and the battery symbol that shows a nearly discharged battery (although it was plugged into a power source). Usual procedures to initiate a Restore via iTunes are not working. Any ideas, anyone?

i have the same problem, my ipad 2 ios 8 update: stuck with apple logo refreshing every 2 minutes or so with the black screen (like the one for boot up or reset) but not turning on or connecting to itunes. plugged it in to the computer for an itunes connect to do a hard reboot and the device shows up in grey (meaning i cannot click on it) for a minute while the ipad cycles with the apple logo. the device showing in itunes then disappears and the whole cycle starts over and over again. yes, please help!

update: ok so another member suggested this and it is working so far, although my data will be lost...it is what it is:

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE

1. Turn off iPad

2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)

3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port

4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)

5. Release Home button.

ON COMPUTER

6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.

7. Select "Restore iPad"...

Note: Data will be lost

I have this same problem but when I try to restore (not in recovery mode) my itunes tells me to turn off Find My iPad before I can restore. My question is this, if I do the home button recovery mode is it going to lock my iPad forever cause it is thinking I have lost my iPad when it is the update doing all this crap?!! Sorry getting very frustrated with Apple right now! No support for older devices and no way to drop down to older iOS.

Someone please help!

Okay, so when I got the message to turn off Find my iPad, I did turn that off just to do the reboot/reset process and then after the whole series was done, which did take a very very long time, then I went ahead and turn back on Find my iPad. I did lose all of my information so after you're all done you want to back it up to your last back up. I hope that helps

My iPad 2 returned from zombie land this morning. Noticed it "recycled" aperiodically where the Apple Logo disappears but the backlight remained on and I could reach the connect to itunes message. Took a couple of tries, but managed ti successfully connect. Ipad is updated to ios 8, data lost of course and my settings were toast, but those are easily restored. Now just waiting for the apps to update. Looks like it will take a while - almost all of them are updating.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Digitalfields, did yours finally get to update? I know it's frustrating and takes a long time but I don't recall having this problem when the big iOS 7 released and everyone else seemed to suffer so I guess I get my troubles now. Mine is also an IPad 2 so I'm wondering if this is why. Hopefully you saw my message to turn off the Find my iPad and kept going from there. After you lose all info, the iOS 8 firmware will already be installed when you back it up. My iPad did not reinstall a lot of apps back onto the device even after the backup (just a heads up if that also should happen to you) but that is a simple fix. Anyways, Good Luck!

HI I had the same problem with io7 and whatever I did I got same result would not get past the iOS install I eventually phoned apple and after taking it to my local apple store what was 45 miles away they then told me the ipad had a hardware fault and the new iOS had found this. I complained that was all fine until I did update they said that I was a week out off warranty and offered me a like for like replacement for £200 I declined and said i wanted to officialy complain to someone higher up and got a call from a manager at app in Ireland who said that was it no replacement and you don't have to update your phone or ipad or iPod Personally I Think it. Bull#### but once you are on a older ipad or phone and your warranty gone ya on your own regardless

IOS 8 update turned my ipad2 into a nice serving tray!

The download completed yesterday in about 30 minutes but wouldn't install because of space issues. I made space and launched the install.

For the last 24 hours I have the alternating Apple logo and black screen. I do get a dead battery icon when I plug into wall or macbook.

Have tried the Forced Recovery described above numerous times and nothing. Just have that Apple logo staring at me.

Any other ideas?

I had same exact issue. Noticed that iPad appeared to "reboot" every so often, is, the logo vanished but the screen remained backlit. It was after one of these events I was able to reach the plug into iTunes screen. Kept trying and finally my desktop and iTunes recognized it and I was able to restore it and update successfully. I started on the evening of the iOS 8 release and succeeded last Saturday. All I can offer is to keep trying and hopefully catch it at the right moment. Frustrating yes. Very much so.

Add my wife to the list.

Being someone who just uses the iPad and doesn't necessarily understand the ramifications of a new iOS, when prompted to upgrade she just went ahead and pressed the button. Thirty six hours later ..... nothing, and of course she didn't make a backup because she just did what the message told her so we are relying on iCloud

I'm now sitting with the iPad connected to the PC with a message saying the iPad is in recovery mode, reset. I know what's going to happen when I reset, all the data will be lost, and if iCloud doesn't have the data then my wife will be devastated. As far as we know it was backing up to iCloud, but of course we can't be sure until it's too late

How can a simple update cause so many problems for so many people ....... it's really unforgivable

Please note that step #3 seems to be quite important. I tried doing my backup via a USB plugged into a USB hub attached to my computer and I got the error. However, when I attached it _directly_ to my Mac, it did the restore just fine.

Just for reference, when I plug my iPad into the Hub I always get "this ipad not charging" warning. But it charges anyway. So, I'd guess that this iOS needs some sort of back and forth communication between the Mac and the iPad that could not occur properly with the hub as an intermediary.

Or, it could be magic...

OK folks, this is the solution to the problem of iPad/iPhone being stuck on the Apple logo screen; Cannot shut device down; iTunes and computer will not recognize device after plugging in to USB port: (At least it was the solution for me. Worked for both iPhone 5c and iPad 2 Retina.)

PLEASE NOTE: Restoring your device using iTunes may result in the resetting of your device to factory condition. Data may be lost. If you have previously backed up your device to iTunes, you can use this backup point plus iCloud to restore most of your data and settings.

  1. Plug device into computer running iTunes, using the USB cable. (If iTunes recognizes your device, you can stop here and restore your device - either as new or from a previous backup)
  2. Reset your device - while plugged in - by holding down the home and sleep buttons for several seconds. The apple logo should blink off and your computer and iTunes will recognize that your device is plugged in.
  3. Proceed with restoring your device using iTunes on your computer. If iTunes doesn't automatically recognize that your device is in recovery mode, click the name of your device in the left pane of the iTunes window, then proceed with the restoration of your device. If you have ever backed your device up to iTunes, you can choose to restore from that backup point. Otherwise, you will have to restore the device as new (factory reset) and will lose your data - however, all apps, free and paid, can be redownloaded from iTunes. Also, if you have backed up any data or media from your device to iCloud, you can restore that data using your device and a WiFi connection.

Hope this helps.
