iPad 2 iOS 8 update resulted in device stuck on Apple logo with almost discharged battery.

Initiated iOS 8 update on iPad 2 last night at 6p. This morning, I find it stuck on the Apple logo, no progress bar. Screen cycles between the logo and the battery symbol that shows a nearly discharged battery (although it was plugged into a power source). Usual procedures to initiate a Restore via iTunes are not working. Any ideas, anyone?

Well after 4 days and numerous attempts to restart, plug in, restore as described here, the Apple Gods finally allowed the ipad and the MBP to communicate and I was able to restore to an icloud back up from the night before the disaster. Nothing lost! Now I have to find something else to carry my Old Fashioned on.

For the record, I'm going with magic...

I did that too and mine did the same thing. Its really frustrating but keep doing the same steps over, trying again and again and eventually it should take. Super annoying, yes but it should work after a few attempts. Mine really took like 2 1/2 hours AND even though I backed it up, I lost most of my data and I am one to keep a very 'full to the top' iPad. But anyways, just keep at it, you at least we're able to get to a critical point. Good luck!!

I too wasn't able to shut my iPad off. However, I was able to hold the home and sleep button for 5 seconds to get it to reboot, and then held the home button down to get the recovery mode. I then restored from backup and it's currently going through the setup process for ios8.

This is the only thing that worked for me. My iPad 2 was cycling between the Apple logo and a black screen and I could not turn it off. I did what was suggested here, while I had it plugged in to my computer and connected to iTunes. My iPad would connect to iTunes, but I couldn't restore because it said I had to turn off Find my iPad and I couldn't update because it said I needed to unlock my device. It would occasionally disconnect from iTunes and I may have been able to get it into recovery mode at that time, but tried this method first. Thanks for the help!!!

OK folks, this is the solution to the problem of iPad/iPhone being stuck on the Apple logo screen; Cannot shut device down; iTunes and computer will not recognize device after plugging in to USB port: (At least it was the solution for me. Worked for both iPhone 5c and iPad 2 Retina.)

PLEASE NOTE: Restoring your device using iTunes may result in the resetting of your device to factory condition. Data may be lost. If you have previously backed up your device to iTunes, you can use this backup point plus iCloud to restore most of your data and settings so that you can fix iPad stuck on Apple logo issue as well as recover lost data.

Plug device into computer running iTunes, using the USB cable. (If iTunes recognizes your device, you can stop here and restore your device - either as new or from a previous backup)

Reset your device - while plugged in - by holding down the home and sleep buttons for several seconds. The apple logo should blink off and your computer and iTunes will recognize that your device is plugged in.

Proceed with restoring your device using iTunes on your computer. If iTunes doesn't automatically recognize that your device is in recovery mode, click the name of your device in the left pane of the iTunes window, then proceed with the restoration of your device. If you have ever backed your device up to iTunes, you can choose to restore from that backup point. Otherwise, you will have to restore the device as new (factory reset) and will lose your data - however, all apps, free and paid, can be redownloaded from iTunes. Also, if you have backed up any data or media from your device to iCloud, you can restore that data using your device and a WiFi connection.

Hope this helps.
