Guided access not working in iOS 8 on iPad Mini Retina

I installed iOS8 on an iPad Mini retina and the install worked without issue (not the case on all of my devices). However, the Guided Access function is not working. It is enabled in Settings as per instructions. Triple-click gives the option to select Guided Access from an app, but when selected nothing happens.

I have tried disabling and re-enabling Guided Access. I have tried in several apps. I have tried restarts and hard resets. I have tried Resetting All Settings. I have tried restoring the device to factory settings and then applying a backup. Nothing has worked.

The feature works fine on an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 5S - but also does not work on my iPad with Retina display.

Has anyone else seen this issue / have a suggestion that I have not tried?

I think this is a bug in iOS 8 as this worked fine before the update.

Same here on iPad 2.

Weird thing #1 is that I tried reset setting and it worked. I was pleased with that.

I thought I had problem with vlc (they just removed from store) so i want for a full reset and restore via cloud. Then guided access is not working whatever i try. I tried recovery with itunes.

Weird thing #2 is that on iPhone 4s guided access is working. But I never used it there. The first time I used guided access with iPhone 4s was with ios 8

I have been having this issue on my son's iPad 3 as well, the only way I've been able to get it work is doing a hard reset (holding home and lock buttons until screen turns off, then waiting until the Apple logo comes back up). Once I've done that Guided Access works again without an issue. However, after a day or so it needs to have this done again in order for it to start working.

I haven't had this issue on my iPhone 5 or my wife's iPhone 4S, however her iPad 2 has the same issue while my 1st Gen iPad Mini doesn't.

The only thing that I can think is that some of the Accessibility changes that were made to accommodate third party keyboards (or other features) is affecting Guided Access. I first thought this because third party keyboards won't work if you have Guided Access enabled on your device (which is an annoyance all on its own), but it was the only thing that seems to have changed in iOS 8 that directly applies to Guided Access.

Hoping this gets fixed with the next patch as it complicates things with young kids who are smart enough to press the home button, but don't realize what that will do to their video/game.

updated an Ipad Air to IOS 8.02. Now Guided Access no longer works. This renders apps you want locked essentially useless. I've tried every trick I found on the internet to get guided access working. No luck.

I am amazed that this option would just stop working. How could that possibly be? Was there ever any testing done before the release of 8.0.2? SMH

I Have same issue . Spent almost 1 hour with Apple care support . Interestingly I was told that Apple disabled this feature on iOS 8 while you are in regular or face time call . Yes you are hearing it right . You can no longer be able to to enable guided access while you are on any type of call. I repeatedly checked with senior tech support person and she has some internal notes that it is willful change from Apple and not a bug .i wonder why Apple would do such kind of things . But hey, it's Apple . There should have seen something that would have forced them to disable it . But unfortunately it's hurting me bad . I can longer give my phone to my kids for a face time call with their grand parents . Poor grandma . They are gone miss their grand children. my iphone is gonna no more part of my family . It will be just my personal device for good 😝

On another thread I found a solution that worked for me on both my iPad and Mini:

In Settings / Accessibility Shortcut uncheck everything except Guided Access.

Turn Guided Access off.

Restart using the power and home buttons (hold both till you see the apple).

Turn Guided Access on. The Accessibility Shortcut switch in the Guided Access settings was on by default and I left it on.

Amazingly, this worked for me - hope it works for others.
