Airplay peer-to-peer

I have been unable to get the new "Peer-to-Peer" airplay feature working.

The AppleTV website lists the following requirements:

"Peer-to-peer AirPlay requires a Mac device (2012 or later) running OS X 10.10 or an iOS device (2012 or later) running iOS 8 and an Apple TV third-generation rev A (model A1469) running Apple TV software 7.0."

I have an A1469 Apple TV as well as several ios and Mac devices that meet allo of the above requirements, yet none of them seem to be able to accomplish a peer-to-peer connection. There is seemingly no option to enable or disable this feature in the most recent AppleTV software update.

Has any one had any luck getting peer-to-peer airplay to work, or is this feature just a myth?

Your Mac devices have to be running Yosemite which is not been released yet. See this for a more detailed explanation of how it works.

i did discover that I had problems when the Apple TV and iPhone were both connected to networks (the Apple TV to Ethernet, and iPhone to a different sub-net Wifi). However, when I disconnected from the wifi network, I was able to connect flawlessly.

Question: Has anyone been able to successfully mirror their *Mac* to AirPlay via peer-to-peer?

I am able to mirror my iPhone (iOS8) to my recently-updated Apple TV without a problem, but my Mac will only work if it's plugged in to the same network via Ethernet. I ask because Apple says here that:

Guests can AirPlay from their Mac or iOS device directly to your Apple TV (model A1469 or later) without connecting to your wireless network.

… and I've never seen it work on a Mac. Does this require Yosemite perhaps? I have a Yosemite beta on an older (Late 2011?) MacBook Air, and Mavericks on a late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, but neither are able to see the Apple TV unless hardwired to the same network. (Wifi doesn't work because I'm on a secure network which doesn't permit multicast DNS for discovery — which is precisely why I'm so excited about peer-to-peer.)

Going by the page on the apple site,

http://www.apple.com/airplay/

It seems at though only guests, not connected to your home network can utilize peer to peer? Seems odd. Wouldn't this be a great feature if you, yourself could send movie and such from your computer and iOS device using bluetooth or whatever it is that enables peer to peer capabilities instead of sucking up your wi-fi bandwidth doing so? I think thats what a lot of people were expecting when this feature was presented. I honestly don't see the use of this new feature. Its seems like its just air play mirroring which has been around for sometime. I'm pretty tech tech savvy but this one has me stumped. Sometimes apple present this big idea that really turns out to be nothing much and incredibly confusing to wrap your head around.

Does anyone that has a real grasp on this explain what the true capabilities and usefulness of this feature are?

Thanks all and good luck figuring this out.

I have had this problem where I couldn't mirror or Airplay content from my Mac or iPhone to my AppleTV. It took me sometime but it finally worked!

How to make it work:

1) Forget WiFi network on your iOS / Mac device(s).

2) Forget Wifi Network on Apple Tv

3) Make sure wifi (even if not connected to any network) and bluetooth are turned on in Apple TV and devices

4) Restart Apple TV and devices.

5) You now should find the AirPlay feature on the device. Connect to Apple TV and here you go! Please note that the first time you connect using peer-to-peer it might take several minutes, DO NOT WORRY.

Important Notice: If the AppleTV and the Apple device are both on the same WiFi network, peer-to-peer mirroring will not work, they will use the network to mirror / airplay.

I order for this to work as mentioned above, please check the following:

First, please check that all your devices has the latest software updates.

Second, please make sure that your AppleTV is Gen. 3 model A1469.

Thirdly, check your iOS / Mac device is compatible with this feature, links below

Hope this works for you as it did for me, ENJOY!

We have an Apple TV A1469 running software version 7.0.2 (6915). We have been trying to use peer-to-peer AirPlay from an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 5s (both running iOS 8.1.1). We are able to get mirroring working perfectly, but when we try to stream an Internet video while mirroring, the AirPlay connection disconnects and Apple TV gives the error "Your Apple TV is not connect to the internet. Check your network settings and try again." Of course, this is a silly error message since an Internet connection is not required for peer-to-peer AirPlay.

Playing video stored locally on the iOS works perfectly, and streaming iTunes radio worked. It's just streaming Internet video that won't work.

We have tried all the suggestions on this forum, as well as others. Nothing seems to work. We have tried the following:

  • Playing video while the iOS device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Playing video while the iOS device is not connected to a Wi-Fi network (Wi-Fi enabled for peer-to-peer AirPlay, Internet connectivity over LTE).
  • Playing video from the YouTube app, as well as youtube.com in Safari.
  • Playing video from non-YouTube sizes through Safari.
  • Restarting the Apple TV and the iOS devices.

As a side note, we got it working using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-in, Late 2013) running OS 10.10.1. Video and everything worked as expected, though the connection seemed a little sluggish in its responsiveness to the mouse movements.

I just talked to apple and this is what they said:

To Airplay Peer to Peer an iOS device to Apple TV with no wifi / internet connection:

  • you can use peer to peer for content that's already on your ios device (videos, pictures, or music that you uploaded to your device)
  • you CANNOT use peer to peer for content such as youtube or netflix streaming from your ios device

So my new apple tv is useless for my needs. Really wish apple would make this more clearly in their description for peer to peer.

I Was trying to get this going for a friend who has no wifi at home. He has unlimited data plan for his iPhone 5s. The idea was to buy an Apple TV without router and AirPlay comtemt to Apple TV without wifi. The problem is the Apple TV only shows the computer and settings icons when not connected to a network so it seems this scenario is impossible for him. What if he had a router but no internet. Might it work then? The probl

he had in the past was that the phone wouldn't dowballad lte data and simultaneously AirPlay to Apple TV cia wifi. Thoughts??

This is great news. I am curious as to what settings you used. I have been unable to get any consistent response with any of the IOS 8 devices and the ATV 3rd gen (model 1469). Do you have a cell connection to your IOS devices, or are they off an internet connection as well? I have enabled the WiFi, bluetooth, and turned airplay on. Sometimes it picks up, many times it does not. I have tried rebooting and resetting the units. Thanks!

Basically my apple tv is set to it's default settings with one exception: I changed TV resolution from 'auto' to '1080p HD - 60Hz'. That's it. I kept everything the same after the update. Even the time is set to 'cupertino californa' despite me living in the east. I spent about 4-5 hours last night airplaying videos through a peer-to-peer connection without interruption. I don't have a cell connection. I don't have any bluetooth keyboards paired to my apple tv. Airplay is 'on' obviously and you seem to be doing everything right as far as keeping wifi and bluetooth on. So far the only problems I've noticed is when I start toggling the mirror mode on & off so I just avoid it.

Hi Justjoined,

thanks for letting us know it doesn´t work on youtube as I was testing using that and getting very frustrated. So I tried other apps etc, and it works ok with mirroring. OK then for presentations (obviously what peer to peer was designed for), but I was unable to stream video content for various sources via mirroring or standard Airplay - got two different error messages one saying Apple Tv not connected to internet. Maybe things will improve with subsequent software updates, but for me it back to going via the router!

On a seperate note, with Bluetooth switched on on both units they are both always searching, they don´t discover each other is that correct?

Cheers

Saw this just now, not strictly true then

An Apple spokesperson said in a statement to The Next Web that ‘AppleTV 3,2′ is basically a stealth refresh:

We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval.

The component changes we made don’t affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.
