iTunes 11.4 bug when used with OS 10.6.8 - won't sync or backup iPhone

I actually just wanted to post this in case Apple monitors these boards. iTunes 11.4 says it's compatible with OS 10.6.8 or later, but there is a bug in it when you're running OS 10.6.8 that prevents you from backing up or synching your iPhone (in my case, a 5s). Doesn't matter what iOS you're running. If you attempt to backup in iTunes 11.4, it immediately ends the backup and only displays "Other" content being stored on your phone. Also, the "Sync" button is greyed out, so you can't even attempt to sync.

No amount of restoring (even a DFU restore) or reinstalling iTunes 11.4 will fix this. The solution is to delete iTunes 11.4 and its related files and to reinstall iTunes 11.3.1, at least until Apple gets the bug corrected. After hours of restores trying to resolve it, I followed this process and it completely solved my problem in about ten minutes. I found the solution with instructions in this thread:

Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

Thanks to cwa2, enee and Zak for supplying the solution. I've also summarized the steps here.

(1) Use this link to download a copy of iTunes 11.3.1:

http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/download-review/1957301/apple-itunes-for-mac-1110

(2) Delete the following iTunes 11.4 components (they will be replaced when you install iTunes 11.3.1) by dragging them to the Trash:

  • /Applications/iTunes.app
  • /Library/Frameworks/iTunesLibrary.framework
  • /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/MobileDevices.bun dle
  • /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext
  • /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
  • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirTrafficHost.framework
  • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework
  • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
  • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework
  • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

(3) Some people have had trouble seeing the contents of the CoreTypes.bundle to get to the MobileDevices.bundle. You can access it this way:

  • In the Finder, select Go To Folder under the Go To menu (or Shift+ Cmd+ G)
  • Type in: /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/
  • The MobileDevices.bundle will be displayed; drag it to the Trash.

(4) Empty your Trash.

(5) Install iTunes 11.3.1, and go back to living your life. Remember, do not upgrade to iTunes 11.4 again until you're certain the bug has been resolved.

Thanks LuvMe,LuvMyiPod,

I appreciate your pulling everything together in an easy-to-follow plan. I applied your fix and I'm now back to syncing and backing up my iPhone 5 on an old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.

I initially contacted apple when the problem (no iPhone sync or backup, no USB link, iPhone content misrepresented) first occurred. Apple customer support was very responsive, but powerless to do anything beyond the normal steps like reloading iTunes 11.4. The OS X team handed me off to the iOS team after uploading a bunch of files from my machine to help engineering figure out what was happening. The iOS tech rep said they subsequently had several more reports, so they know it wasn't just my problem.

After following your fix-plan, I understand why Apple's help desk says one "can't" retrogress to an earlier version of iTunes. It's not something all users are going to be comfortable with doing, but the fix you, cwa2, enee and Zak presented and developed got me back in business.

Thanks again,

Hi Tom -

Thanks for your post on the iPhone syncing problem fix. I tried that same process under the direction of an Apple Tech, but it didn't work for me. Maybe my memory isn't completely accurate.

Were you running a 32 bit machine with a Intel Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo which is 64 bit) as well as 10.6.8? I got an error message saying that the Apple USBEthernetHost.kext file wasn't installed properly, so that was the initial focus of the Apple help desk action to fix.

Some people have sugggested that the USBEthernetHost.kext file, or maybe some other file, was a 64 bit version and unsuitable for a 32 bit machine. However, the Apple tech said that people with more current machines were also having problems.

Thanks,

TalentFinder,

Yes, I have an iMac Core Duo. I did not get any error messages when I installed iTunes 11.4. I just had the "no-sync,Other content" problem. When I saw LoveMe,LoveMyiPod's solution, I speculated that the problem might be that one of the files in question might be corrupted and, for some reason, not replaced when iTunes was updated. I actually started with the USBEthernethost.kext file since the iPhone connects via USB. and lucked out that it worked the first time. I don't know if the file was corrupted or just too old or what, all I know is that it worked.

Thanks very much, Tom Petro-Roy! Your solution worked. (My problem was that Manually manage music would not work at all, in addition to incorrect iPhone music contents showing in iTunes, and inoperable Sync Music Selected playlists...) iMac Intel Core Duo, OS 10.6.8, iTunes 11.4, iPhone 5, iOS 8.1.2. Apple posts the iTunes 11.4 installer at http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes. Could not drag AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext out of the Extensions folder to move it (that would only make a copy); had to use 'sudo mv ...' in the Terminal window.

... Goes to iTunes 12.2?

I am also 10.6.8, iTunes 11.4, iPod 8.4. However, I am not experiencing the "greyed out" sync button. When I click the sync button, the progress bar goes through all 6 steps farily quickly - but no music is sync'd to the iPod. I can manually update the music from the Library to the iPod though. Which I don't want to be stuck with.
