ios 8 on iPhone can't access google as exchange account

On my iPhone I have accessed a google account for email and calendar by having an Exchange account set up using server m.google.com. This provides push email and instant calendar updates. This has stopped working after the ios 8 upgrade (was fine on 7.1.2).

The calendar no longer appears and email can't be sent and received. When deleting/adding the account back in it's verified OK but the calendar does not show.

I've added the account as a google account and this works (in fetch mode), but I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem as me?

I thought I was unique with that issue. Tried recreating the account on iphone - same result.

Using Google as provider works but contacts do not sync. Calendar does.

But the Exchange provider, in general, seems to be working - I get my corporate email.

I have noticed that on the settings screen it says "Automatic Reply - Loading...". Maybe that's where it gets stuck.

It seem that Google has dropped Exchange support a while ago....maybe they kept it for existing devices and that's why it worked for my old 4S and no longer works after switching to 6.

Yes, Google dropped Active Sync in Feb 2013, but users that had Gmail set up as Exchange could continue using it only on existing devices. Changing devices removes Google Exchange support. I believe certain types of Gmail accounts (e.g. business) continue to support Active Sync.

I am on wifi and it cannot be that slow 😉 Yes, it is ON. I do have more than one account but the default one should indicate where the new contacts are stored - I think it is irrelevant.

Meanwhile I have noticed that there was no "GMail" group in the list of groups in the Contacts app. Which, I think, indicated there there was never a successful sync so far. I have restarted the phone and the GMail group has appeared and I do see my contacts now.

So, either Google was slow (or dead) because of the stress caused by new devices today or it is an iOS bug.

I solved this after a lot of headaches, resets, deleting and hair-pulling. It's actually simpler than everyone is making it out to be:

  1. Set up your account through Google (not Exchange).
  2. Once validated, make sure "Calendars" is turned on.
  3. Go to the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" part of settings, and you'll see an option for "Fetch New Data" under your accounts.
  4. Open "Fetch New Data".
  5. At the bottom of the screen there is an option called "FETCH", which gives a little blurb about the schedule and battery life. It will likely be set to "Manually".
  6. Change the setting from "Manually" to "Hourly". On the Manual setting, the phone simply doesn't send a request for the info (that's Fetch vs Push for you).
  7. Go to the "Default Calendar" screen at the very bottom of "Mail, Contacts, Calendars". You should now see all your custom calendars as choices!

Once you select your new default, all calendar apps should be able to access the data like they did before with Exchange.

Adding/editing/deleting events also works fine from both the phone or the web - the changes register within a few seconds.

I have recreated the "problem" and fixed it this way successfully multiple times on my phone (iPhone 6, iOS 8.1) with multiple accounts, so hopefully this solves the problem for people!
