Audiobooks and podcasts NOT WORKING after iOS 8 upgrade

My podcasts and audiobooks disappeared from my iPhone after the iOS 8 upgrade.

I am unable to sync podcasts and audiobooks back to my phone after the upgrade.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I checked for upgrades, have upgraded the iTunes, restarted the computer and the phone. Syncing over both wifi and cable. It does not work.

So once I was home I tried the path of least resistance:

  1. Open iTunes
  2. Highlight the mp3 audiobook files
  3. Right click
  4. Get Info
  5. Options
  6. **Change media kind to anything but audiobook**
  7. Check off remember position
  8. Check off skip when shuffling

You're golden

It annoys me to listen to an audiobook at normal speed so a third party app is probably what I will go with to play the files at 1.5x or 2x speed

If it helps one person avoid the day I lost on this problem - It would have been worth it.

what a horrible experience buying audiobooks with Apple!

After this I am not buying another audiobook in iTunes. Apple obviously has no concern with customer experience. I actually want my money back for the few books I just purchased. And I have spent $1000's of dollars in iTunes over the years. What an arrogent, AWFUL customer experience.

I would recommend not buying Audiobooks in Apple. Its obviously a business they care nothing about, and who wants to spend an entire evening hunting down the files you just spend $50 for. What a joke.

For me enguarrand's solution worked great for some of my files. Unfortunately, it requires an additional application. To add the meta data tag, I used MusicBrainz Picard. It's a free app and seemed to do a fine job.

All in all, I didn't get it to work with all files and who knows why. Apple has messed this up.

Hmmm...A further update to AAC encoded files. I have some I CDs I encoded with iTunes to M4A and also some WMA audiobooks encoded with iTunes to M4B. I edited their metadata tags with the program mp3tag to add ITUNESMEDIATYPE = Audiobook. These files play properly as an audiobook.

I had the same issue; there are some audio books which have a one license agreement meaning you download it and purchase it on that device you can not access via the cloud. It is recommended to purchase audio books from iTunes on your computer and sync to the devices. This way you only have a one time purchase.

I now only purchase audio books from my mac mini iTunes and sync to the appropriate devices. This is stated in Apple's agreement... There isn't a way to see this when purchasing it from the iTunes store so it is best to follow the recommendation above purchase from computer iTunes on your computer NOT a device.
