Sep 24, 2014 5:35 PM in response to michael rfromchicagoby elhombrealto,★HelpfulThis happened to me as well. In fact it happened twice. The first time, the icons just sort of reset themselves after about 12 hours. No reasoning behind it as far as I could tell. A few days later I powered down the phone, and once again upon restart, the icons showed up only as the white default image. Unfortunately, still two days later, nothing had reverted back and the blank icons remained.
But I did find a quick solution that worked phone. I know this is going to sound wacky, but please give it a try.
I switched the iPhone's language from English to Japanese. After what felt like ages (when in fact it was only just a few minutes), the language change kicked-in and all of my icons had returned to normal. I then reverted my language settings back to English, and the original icons were still there. For now, it seems to be a fix.
My reasoning behind this is that a number a years ago I had a different problem with my 3GS. On that occasion, I was having trouble with my music files naming and ordering. After a lot of playing and iPhone reformatting, by chance I happened upon the same solution. All it took was a change of the ios language to fix those problems.
Please take a moment to try it out. But be careful to take note of which steps you take to change the language. You will need to retrace those steps when you want to revert it back to your native language, and the menus can be a little tricky if you can't read them.

Sep 25, 2014 1:53 AM in response to elhombrealtoby lynjon1,Thanks. Sounds like a nifty solution. In fact I followed Michael rfromchicago's example. I deleted all the bookmarks and reinstalled from scratch. Then the bookmarks all appeared normally (bar one which I'm still trying to sort out). If this happens again I'll try your Japanese solution!

Sep 25, 2014 6:58 AM in response to lynjon1by elhombrealto,I would find it hard to believe that this fix is limited to the Japanese language. In theory, it should work the same if you switch between any two languages. The Japanese menu's can be tricky to maneuver through if you are not familiar with the language. You may consider sticking with another that might be easier to read.

Sep 26, 2014 4:14 PM in response to Thergeby elhombrealto,I'm curious if the return of the problem came as a result of shutting down your IOS device or if it just appeared on its own. I have not had any problems since switching languages. The home screen bookmarks on my iPhone 5 are still working as they should be, but I have been hesitant to power off my phone, worrying that the trouble may return.

Sep 27, 2014 1:55 AM in response to elhombrealtoby Therge,Indeed I did schut down, but used it several times after that with no problem, seems that after a certain time (overnight) it disappeares again.
The good news is, I installed IOS 8.02 this morning and the problem seems to be solved. not cheering to loud, still have to wait what will happen later in time
( in the update reference is made to problems with safari pictures that are solved, so maybe that was it)
By the way my device is an Ipad Mini retina.

Sep 27, 2014 2:07 AM in response to Thergeby elhombrealto,I too installed the IOS 8.02 update, and when it was finished things seemed fine. However, I decided to double check everything by shutting down my iPhone 5. When it restarted, once again the icons were gone. I just did the language-switch fix, and the icons re-appeared. So it appears that 8.02 didn't really fix anything on my end. Too bad.

Sep 29, 2014 5:23 PM in response to William Donelsonby elhombrealto,I'm glad to hear that it is working for others. This does not appear to be a permanent fix. However, it works well enough as a temporary work-around until Apple can look into the problem. I've had to do "The Switch" 3 or 4 times now (each time it was only after a shutdown and restart that the icons disappeared). In my case, as long as I don't instigate a shut-down, the trouble stays away.

Sep 30, 2014 11:39 AM in response to elhombrealtoby Therge,Well, it worked...for 2,5 days this time,
I just had to restart because the homebutton wasn't functioning properly, and to my suprise I have lost the icons again.
It beats me.
Im gonna try the the lanquage- switch again tomorrow morning, if it hasn't been resolved by itself (probably not... )

Sep 30, 2014 1:52 PM in response to Thergeby William Donelson,Yes, I occasionally need to restart my iPhone 5S.
I found that switching between English and English (UK) works too! Icons come back fine.

Oct 9, 2014 8:56 AM in response to elhombrealtoby julzzzy,You are an absolute ROCKSTAR!!! I use the save to home screen feature the way lots of people(with possible addiction issues) add apps. I have hundreds of them and the icon art is the only way I am able to find and use them. I ended up using Spanish (my iPad didnt't have UK English as an option) and even with a limited understanding and Google translate it was kind of tricky to get back to English as things were in a slightly different order in the settings. And you're right, the time it takes while changing languages seems like an eternity but the end result is totally worth it! Thank you so much for posting this fix!!!
