IOS 8 won't sync music with itunes

It finally moved to syncing, BUT it only says that it is syncing 4000 songs there are 13,000 in my library. The setting is set to sync all music, Am I doing something wrong?

Update - I was on the phone with Apple Support last night for an hour and a half. The first hour was useless, the last half entailed me speaking to a "supervisor" who basically told me to do a Restore and set up as an entirely new iPhone. Again, since I already did that, several times. I laughed at said supervisor but did what they said, and somehow following their directions exactly, things started working again. I don't get it. All of my music copied. Videos too. The status bar on the bottom had no more large chunks of "other" ghost memory amounts. All was well. And all is STILL well. I'm in shock. I have synced and backed up, backed up and synced a total of FIVE times today. Each time has gone without a hitch. Well, there is ONE thing...on the last step (the dreaded "Step 6 - Wait While Changes Are Being Applied"), it takes a while to get to the very very last step...syncing the artwork for the same 594 out of 6400 songs, over and over again. Any clues on how to fix that? So now I am setting everything up from scratch again (i.e. settings, customizations, email, Bluetooth, etc., etc.) for the nth time, and you KNOW the second that I have got everything PERFECT, the music will disappear for no reason again 🙂 I've got another follow up/status call with Apple supervisor on Sunday, if that doesn't work, I'll be going with Greg Bastug1's reccs. I spoke too soon 😟 The second that I paired the phone up with my vehicle's handsfree and Bluetooth audio system, I got the rapid fire fast forward through 6000 songs and everything "disappeared" off of the phone again. I give up. I want my 4S back.

What is wrong with quality control? All these years since iPod -> 3GS to iPhone5 i never had an issue to get my device setup correctly. Without any hassle.

The **** sync doesn't work reliably at all.

Not just the music.

I tried with iPhone 6 setup as new device and it showed several interrupted syncs. Not just music. While syncing apps sync interrupted.

And i got to the point where the added music appeared as unknown data in itunes again. So i quess the "new device" way isn't safe either.

I'm quite sure there is no "safe" route for getting this fixed by us yourself.

It is not "9 users who can't get it right".

The whole sync process is everything else than rock solid and so full of bugs and fragile...

Do they expect us to report a single bug? When there are so many that every tester/developer who fiddles around a bit ends up in a mess...

The "setup as new device" is not an option. You will most probably end in a mess again and invested a lot of your time by getting all the other lost stuff back.

Finally i've gone back to restoring from my backup. Needless to say syncing music doesn't work no matter which setting...

If i wanted a device i'd want to fiddle around with all night i'd get an Android.

So i'll just wait for them to fix it to fill up my shiny useless 128 GB.

I won't invest any more hours into this broken thing.

And if - like mentioned here - nothing happens i'll get the message...

I got just mine to work based on many responses here for iTunes 11.4.0.18 \ iOS 8.0.2 \ Windows 8.1

1) Uninstalled all Apple products from Windows 8.1

2) Downloaded and installed iTunes

3) Start iTunes after installation

3) Powered off iPhone

4) Powered iPhone back on

5) Connect iPhone to PC

6) Everything started working. Got prompted to install iCloud for Windows but that didn't seem to matter.

Guys. Reading the posts in the this discussion could help. And will be a real time saver. The problem is solved. Go to your iTunes Music folder and get rid of all the files and folders that don't belong there. That's all. As an extra it could be wise to repair your disk permissions: use Disk Utility or run OnyX (download OnyX here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx, okay all the prompts, run 'Automatic'). It's not your iPhone, it's not iOS8, it's just that something got screwed up in your iTunes media Library. Can happen. Don't whine about it. Don't wait for Apple to fix it because they can't and they won't. Just fix it like described here. And enjoy your iPhone en iOS8. They're great.

I think it is premature to close the discussion. I'm syncing both my 5S and a new 6 to the same iTunes, playlists, podcasts, everything, with no changes on the PC / iTunes side from when I started a week and a half ago. The 5S syncs, no issues.

With the 6, I had issues initially with opening a playlist, and it would race through not playing anything, just flashing the artwork and song info like it was playing, fraction of a second each song. It also did not record a "play" when flashing through this, so not really working with any file I think, probably just the artwork at that point.

Eventually (and for nearly a week now) I found that I just need to do a three step sequence to get the music and podcasts to update on the 6:

1) Connect the 6, and it is already checked for "Manually Manage music and videos", since this was how it was set the last time I disconnected. The connection works, apps update, some song play count and day/time information is sent back to iTunes. No new songs go to the 6, no revised playlists (I have some dynamic ones that change if songs are played off) or podcasts go to the 6. Not to worry... wait for it...

2) While the 6 is still connected, change the "Manually Manage music and videos" to NOT checked. This reverts the Music playlists so you can see them, Podcast selections so you can see them, Movies and TV shows as well. You could make changes to your Playlist selections at this point. Click to Apply/Sync this. The sync processes, but nothing goes to the 6. Not to worry... wait for it...

3) While the 6 is still connected, change the "Manually Manage music and videos" to YES CHECKED ON. This will remove the selectors in iTunes for Music, Podcasts, Videos and TV Shows, but iTunes still remembers what those selections were, it remembers which Playlists you wanted. Click to Apply/Sync this. The sync processes, and now you should see music files, podcast files, going to the 6. Sometimes it is an efficient changed-only copy to the 6. Sometimes, it reloads all the thousands of music files you wanted on the 6. But in my experience, this three-step sequence works EVERY TIME. Said another way, since I've been doing this three-step sequence, it has never NOT worked. Leave the "Manually Managed" set to on, and disconnect the device. I also have not had the issue with Playlists on the 6 racing through to find something to play, since doing this sequence, so that tells me the method of getting the songs on the iPhone 6 is now working consistently. I see some artwork is missing, but it isn't a huge number that are missing.

Note that I have NOT restored the 6 as a new device, it was a copy from the 5S backup. I haven't replaced the iTunes. I haven't fiddled with the Windows 7 file system, or tried to remove any non-standard files from my iTunes. I haven't rebuilt anything. The only change has been the "Manually Manage" check box. Is it perfect? absolutely not. Am I able to listen to my music? yes.

I don't have to do any of this with the 5S. Both are on iOS 8.0.2. My iPad Mini Retina is also on 8.0.2 and has no issues syncing. The issue is in the iPhone 6, and I am waiting for an update to iOS 8.x at some indeterminate future date 🙂

Thanks for these tips. I'm picking up a new iMac soon & I plan on following your steps (no restoring from backup, etc.) & treating it like a new install. I've had nothing but a series of nightmares with my 5S since upgrading to iOS 8.

I've been following this discussion for a week.

I can't believe it, but deleting itunes and reinstalling it worked for me! I'm not going to try re-synching 4-5 times to see if it keeps working. I just wanted some music for my plane ride next week...

Lost all music but purchased after upgrade from 4s to 6. Nothing from the burned CDs would play And or sync depending on which post I followed here. I did many restores trying to fix this. Best recollection is the phone was set up as new and then restored from back up.

What worked for me was to delete all my music from settings on the phone and then powering off and back on.

I did a sync with all of the music options turned off. I had an issue with sync hanging until I updated all apps. Unplugged the phone from the computer. Then set the checkbox on the music tab to sync music as normal. Now have the same set of playlists as on the 4s. No issues at all now.

I think the key is to sync the phone w/o music and then add it back.

Update - I spent a second night working extensively with yet another AppleCare Senior Advisor, this guy knew his stuff 🙂 We did a lot of trial and error but honed in on two big changes -- one, we did a quick sort on the entire music library and simply deleted any file that wasn't an MP3 or AAC; and two, we selected the option "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128Kbps AAC". That's it. After that, we were able to copy one, then several of my iTunes library audio files onto to my iPhone 6 running 8.0.2. without issue, and so far so good, they're all still playing. Right now I am syncing back the entire library so I won't know for sure until tomorrow if the fix works, my computer is SLOW. The other ask of the Advisor was NOT to use Bluetooth until we regroup tomorrow night, give it a day of just using the phone, playing music and doing anything BUT Bluetooth. Maybe there's more to the story, or maybe I've got a lemon, who knows. Bottom line - AppleCare IS helping, or at least trying to help, they are very responsive and supportive and know a lot more about what to do about this issue than I initially gave them credit. Conversely, any discussion about closing this discussion thread is ridiculous, it is a big issue, it is being experienced by many, it is difficult for the average iPhone user to sort through 13 pages of comments and come up with THE solution, and I for one appreciate the opinions and facts that are being shared, I'm sure Apple is reading these behind the scenes.
