If you scan back over the whole discussion, especially the last dozen or so posts, you'll see that changing settings does not solve the problem.

What does solve the problem temporarily is restarting your iPad or iPhone. But it will return in hours at most. Restarting may be useful if you need to sync and can't use a USB cord.

Some posters report receiving responses from Apple support, so at this point, we just have to wait for a fix.

Me neither. This has to be one of the most irritating problems that I've ever had with iOS (and I've been there from day dot!). The history of getting my music onto my phone:

1) Bought phone, 128GB iP6. Plugged it in, restored it from a backup.

2) Set it to sync all music over USB, left it overnight (approx 65GB worth)

3) Came to it the following morning, seemingly synced. Started playing music, each track apart from the ones I've purchased from iTunes skipped and said it wasn't on the phone

4) Re-synced via USB, "Other" storage in the iTunes summary was over 20GB. Neither music NOR apps synced.

5) Re-synced *AGAIN* via USB, music still didn't copy across

6) Restored from backup, re-synced, no joy

7) Restored as a new phone, re-synced over USB, no joy.

8) Turned "update via wifi" off, restored from backup, synced overnight, all music FINALLY transferred to the phone

9) Enabled "update via wifi" again, music appeared but with no artwork

10) synced over wifi overnight, phone's name changed back to just "iPhone", only purchased music was visible, but with 50+ GB in the "Other" section in iTunes summary. Used iFunBox to remove the "music" folder from iTunesControl and hopefully reclaim it

11) Phone no longer visible on iTunes, despite reboots and restarts, even after renaming the phone back to its original name.

12) Now restoring via USB again after turning off the wifi sync yet again. Stuck on "waiting for changes to apply"

Really, really annoyed by this, Any wireless sync that "works" seems to block off 90% of my library, despite the files being on the phone. I have a central media server, and Wifi sync is the best way for me to sync mine and my partners' phones, and so far it's taken over 24 hours of messing about, wiping, restoring, syncing and repeating the whole process to get back to the same scenario I was in before I got the **** thing!

Sounds like you had a terrible time setting up your iPhone 6. But none of your listed experiences is related to this thread.

What we're talking about are iPhones and iPads dropping off of the iTunes device list when not connected by USB.

As far as I've experienced or read about, USB syncing always works for those posting in this thread. Also, a restart of the iDevice always brings back WiFi syncing temporarily.

Interesting. Are you saying that if you power down your iPhone or iPad, then start it up again that it still never shows up in the iTunes list? So the only way you can get it to show is by plugging in via USB? Do you, like winstan0, have multiple issues, or just problems with WiFi sync?

Anyone else seeing that behavior?

Meanwhile, my iPad has been consistently on the list, and can be synced by WiFi, for several hours after just plugging it in, with no restart involved.

My iPhone 6, plugged in and synced at the same time, is not showing up in iTunes.

I have tried every fix available on this thread and most of them work... for a time. Then back to the same thing again. No devices listed in iTunes and no WiFi sync. As long as I stay within the same network as my MBP everything is okay. As soon as I take the iPhone or iPad out of the home and connect to another network all is lost when I return.

This is among the most frustrating issues I have faced with Apple and iTunes. Everything was fine until the upgrade to iOS 8. Occasionally would lose the device in iTunes but usually it was just a matter of turning my network connection off and back on.

As a side, another family member has NEVER been able to do WiFi syncing since upgrading to iOS 6 (yes 6, not a typo). No matter what I do, devices are not recognized in iTunes and every sync has to be done with a USB cable.
