iphoto won’t import mov video

Iphoto 9.5.1 (mac mini, mavericks) suddenly stopped playing some mov videos. With iphoto library manager I found out that unplayable mov files are indicated in iphoto as pictures. When I press «reveal in finder» I still can play all the mov files via quicktime. But when I try to delete and re-import them into iphoto library I always get the message «The following files could not be imported. The file is an unrecognised format». I deleted perian, quicktime 7, fip4mac, I did rebuild and repair of the library. Nothing helps (sorry for my English).

I have entered the password, hit 'return' and waited a little bit until my username came up again on a new line. I have since restarted my computer and rebooted and tried to import 1 video and am getting the same error:

clip-2012-08-17 01;23;56.mov Unsupported file type

We actually have a significant amount of media stored in the iMovie Library (not iTheater). I have revealed the clips in finder and am trying to import them into Photos. I had to drag groups of videos into folders on my desktop (I've disabled iCloud backup of desktop and documents) and am now trying to import them. These videos can be played in QuickTime, but I want to get them into Photos by importing several at a time - one by one is not an option since we have so many videos we need to do this for.

I'm really in need of some help...yikes

I think I have the EXACT same problem. (Everything also up to date)

I can't view movies that were viewable just days ago. (So, I am guessing this happened for me with the most recent OS update a day or so ago.)

Some videos from my (non iPhone) cameras will play. But LOTS don't. Some have audio and no video. iPhone movies won't play at all.

I can't import videos from my iPhone 5 into a library -- not even a brand new library. It gives me the same message that it is an unrecognized format. In fact, I can't import .mov files from two new Canon cameras that I imported from just days ago! I get the same error message.

This happens with some variation in both Aperture and iPhoto. Actually, iPhoto shows many of my videos (except iPhone vids), unlike Aperture which lets me view very few.

I have repaired and rebuilt the library/database. As I said, I have created a new library. No change - same problem occurs.

iPhoto won't even let me export video.

But, if I view the original movie file in finder, everything works fine, no problems - I can Quick Look it, open it in Quicktime, etc. etc.

** This is THE ERROR MESSAGE that I am getting TONS of in the console whenever I try to do just about anything with movies: **

Any help greatly appreciated.

Wow!

I just read the thread to which léonie pointed. (Thanks!)

In System>Library>Caches, I had a file named "com.apple.xpchelper.cache". That file showed a modification date of yesterday -- I don't know what changes this file. Quite likely it was the install of 10.9.5 that I did yesterday.

Now, I was lucky enough to have a clone of my system from 3-4 days ago. I copied the older (cloned) version of this file, which itself had a modification date of about a month ago - to the working system. (I first renamed the current "com.apple.xpchelper.cache" to be safe.)

Then, I restarted ... and everything works like before! All movies play, and I can import.

I am not sure at all why this happened or why the above has fixed things for me, but it seems it has!

I am very happy to have fixed this issue without having to do a system recovery, which always has hitches here and there, and takes a decent chunk of time no matter how "backed up" you are.
