iOS 8 upgrade deleted keyboard shortcuts

Besides the title I'm not sure what else to ask. When I upgraded to iOS 8 the keyboard shortcuts (i.e. when I type "hh" it will give me "heading home" as a choice to use). Now all those shortcuts that I have used are all gone.

Any ideas?

I've now realised that since iOS 8.1 my iPhone 6 has the shortcuts on, but won't update them!! my macbook has always been the device I've added or deleted shortcuts on and now its like they're separate shortcut albums (or whatever they're called lol), they won't sync 😟 I'm glad I've got the shortcuts since i updated, but the new ones I've added on my mac don't go on the phone, and visa versa. 😐

This is so frustrating.

My keyboard shortcuts are all screwed up thanks to ios8.

when I got my iphone6 all my shortcuts were gone.

So I re-entered them one by one. Made a new list.

My new list of shortcuts has some differences compared to the old one.

Then few days later I realized all my old shortcuts were back.

So I now have duplicates.

And since my new list has some differences I get some of the same shortcut keys leading to different phrases, and vice versa.

You'd think just merely deleting or re-editing would solve the problem. Nope, it didn't. All it does is make a new entry "in the icloud"

AND to make matters worse, while re-editing my list I had made some mistakes, and even after going back to alter my mistakes, the wrong ones never went away.

The list just keeps piling up.

I edit an existing entry, it syncs and the next day the old and new both show up.

I delete, they all come back the next day - the new, the old, the edits, the deleted, everything.

So now some of my shortcuts I cant use because they either show mistakes or won't reflect the new updated phrases.

I don't use iCloud drive. Predictive text is off. Documents & Data is off. Backup on iCloud is off and deleted. Even keychain is off now. Anything and everything that can be switched off for iCloud is off except find my iPhone. And that doesn't solve the problem. The only option now is to disconnect iCloud altogether.

Oh and one more thing, if I type in a shortcut that contains more than 3letters in a form, eg an address field, Safari hangs.

It's a nightmare.

If you look at our username then this sums it all up! We were having the exact same problems except that Safari would only freeze when typing certain letters. We seem to have tried everything. Apple supported us with resetting the phone to factory conditions, together we restored the latest backup where we had deleted all our shortcuts before creating the backup and still, the problem isn't solved. We now are waiting for a replacement iPhone 6 but I personally doubt whether the headaches are gone. I believe there is something seriously wrong and I don't know if APPLE knows how to resolve it. Just keep the posts coming because this is a NIGHTMARE / HEADACHE and we as customers seem to be the guinea pigs trying to find what's causing it. Wasting hours and hours with restoring, backing up, setting up new shortcuts and then deleting old ones that turn up out of the blue. I always thought Microsoft was bad but now.............?

I Switched my language from English US to English UK and it seemed to work to a certain extent. It resets my shortcuts to a slightly newer list that didn't contain the duplicates and deleted ones.

THought it finally solved the problem but few days later the old outdated list with deleted entries and duplicates pops up again.

Then guess what?

I disconnected icloud since there was no way to stop my shortcuts from "mis-synching", and my phone call with the apple tech support left me even more frustrated as the support person obviously did not understand what I was talking about at all.

I Should be able to use my shortcuts as I wanted to. Or so I thought.

EVerything was fine for 4 days.

until I had to restart my phone today (double press home button stopped working for the 3rd time, but that was a whole other irritating iphone6 malfunction altogether).

All the keyboard shortcuts (old deleted/new/duplicates) pops up again.

AND MY ICLOUD WAS OFF THE WHOLE TIME!

It's either a cache problem within my phone itself or Apple connects to our phones to sync stuff even if icloud is off.

I don't know. I'm so sick of this and Apple. Not even sure if a hard reset would solve the problem.

had reset won't fix it. probably

I've fully reset my iPod touch and now it takes the shortcuts from my iPhone 6, which use to sync on my could and everything was the same. now my macbook is separate due to iOS 8 on iPhone and iPod touch. but at first my iPod used the shortcuts off my macbook but randomly switched to copying the ones on my iPhone because the iPhone ones wouldn't work so i put most of them on it individually.

this is really annoying, but in know for me when i got a new device or wiped an old one its just made the shortcuts worse 😢

Trust me, resetting your IOS device (a) won't solve the problem and (b) is a major exercise to do to fix something that is clearly and IOS bug that Apple simply won't or can't address. (It's definitely IOS because these problems are happening on my iPad and iPhone but not MacBook.)

You are spot on Connie, resetting the iOS doesn't solve the problem at all. I'm still having a headache. However, Apple seems to be trying to fix it since I have brought it to their attention a long time ago, but if they can is a different story. They seem to have been working on it for weeks and still no word that they have found the cause.

Hi, I think there are different problems with the shortcuts. In my case I can't even create new shortcuts on my iPhone. The list stays empty.

Last week they were suddenly back again. But with iOS 8.1.1 they were gone. It's horrable. If I can create them manually it would be okay. But this function doesn't exist for me. 😠

Does anybody else have this problem?

Many issues with shortcuts...

It's a syncing issue with iCloud "Dictionaries" which is a hidden folder in the iCloud Drive folder. If you're a dev or comfortable using Terminal, the following command will place a "real iCloud drive" folder on your desktop which will allow you to see ALL the items in iCloud Drive. Inside this folder is the folder called "Settings" and then "Dictionaries". You can then see other nested folders from each device ID (Macs, iOS) that write to iCloud.

This is not a fix but here's the steps to view those:

1) In terminal:

ln -s ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/ ~/Desktop/Real\ iCloud\ Drive

2) You will now have an alias on your desktop to the iCloud Folder (you must choose to view it in a Finder window as list view)

Drill down until you find a file with the extension .cdt

3) Duplicate that file onto your desktop and CHANGE the extension to .zip and unzip it.

4) ADD the extension .plist to the end of the UNIX file that was unzipped and then you can view it in text edit app and see the shortcuts info.

Again, not fixing anything, but trying to narrow it down and hope that some developer/programmer out there with better knowledge than mine can help!

Just a reminder to everyone to report the issue to Apple and go to Genius Bar if you have the time and call Apple Support:
