accessibility zoom in iOS 8 problems

Hello all!

i am visually impaired and i have ben using iOS and mac devices for many years

Especially in iOS, zoom feature is so handy that helped me so much with my daily tasks!

Everything was working perfectly until iOS 8

I know iOS 8 brought many features for people with disabilities and made improvements for people with vision loss

I'm experiencing 2 issues

1. When zooming in if you tap once there is a new black dialogue window with different features that is quite annoying and you have to tap somewhere else so as to disappear (this can't be disabled from settings,) and i am not talking about the controller

2. Zooming in now isn't that accurate and smooth...i have turned on "Zoom on focus" but still zooming in with the three finger gesture isn't that smooth

has anyone had any similar experiences?i hope they fix this since this is on of the main reasons why i seriously love apple. Because it had all people with disabilities in mind and added features when none else even cared!

thank you all!

I Also have same problems. I will try some of the stuff mentioned here.

but there's more, please tell me if any of you know about these:

-when in zoom it sometimes glitches out and zooms out by itself for a second or 2 then zooms back in.

-I use to be able to always have zoom and voiceover on at once. I don't always use them at once but I could now I cant. Here's what happens:

when both are are on and I try to scroll it says "page one of one" when there's more. So now every time I go into ask I have to go into ask twice, one to turn one on, and 2 to turn the other off.

i have the air 2 and 5s. It did it in my iPad 3 as well, which I longer have because I have the air 2.

I am running the latest iOS.

Zoom mode in iOS 8 is an example of trying to improve a feature that was not broken. I just saw Zoom on a friend's iOS 8 device and will definitely stay in iOS 7 for now until Apple works this out. On first look, I find the updated feature to be cumbersome at best, and unusable (for me) at worst.

From what I've read, this update is an example of a feature that Steve Jobs would have sent back to the drawing board. The iOS 7 version was so incredibly simple. Triple tap the screen and you're in; triple tap again and you're out. Navigating and setting the magnification were likewise simple. There is no reason whatsoever for adding a virtual magnifying-glass widget that simply gets in the way of working directly with the content. I cannot imagine this new feature would have passed Mr. Jobs' KISS rule.

Please, Apple, restore the old functionality in your next update.

Dear Toadfish: You are a miracle worker! That EXACTLY fixed the problem. I can't believe I've been struggling with this for the last week, and nearly went out to buy a new iPad but was resisting as there is just so much negative stuff in the air right now post the latest upgrades. didn't want to invest more until these things get fixed FIRST. Thank you. Thank you. - MinnyApple

Hi,

I am a bit late to this post as I am terrible at updating software. However last month I updated the software on my ipad and am now experiencing all the same issues as many of you with regards to the Zoom feature. These are;

  1. It is slower and seems to 'stick' - doesn't operate smoothly.
  2. Even though I set it to 'whole screen zoom' this annoying window keeps popping up. This particularity seems to happen in apps such as FB and it may be related to the keyboard but i am not sure. In some cases if i go back to accessibility settings and re-select whole screen mode the window disappears but in some case this doesn't work.

Any suggestions with this? It is really affecting my use and enjoyment of the product. I have Stargarts Macular Dystrophy and need the Zoom to be able to read the screen. Also I am thinking about upgrading my iphone 4 (which works perfectly and i love it its just the battery is rubbish) to an iphone 6 (attracted by bigger screen) Does the iphone 6 have these issues?

Does anyone have tips for me on using the voice activation I have never got to grips with that as no SIRI on iphone 4.

I am going to complain directly to Apple but is it worth visiting an Apple Store?

If you have already answered my questions point me towards your post please.

Thank you in advance.......

Hi vision73, I too have Stargarts Macular Dystrophy and also experience these problems previously.

I am using the iPhone 6 Plus and so far so good, everything is is within expectation and i am loving it. i would believe that iPhone 4 is not capable of handling the software.

Following is my settings for the zoom feature, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33447637/1.PNG

I use to have problems with the zoom and thought that Apple could have done a better job, however with this settings i do not face any issue with the zoom anymore.

When Browsing Facebook i will use voice overs, i have set the Accessibility Shortcut to Voice over so conveniently i can bring up voice over when ever needed with triple press of the home button.

On a side note i would love to hear more from you on how u are moving on in life with this condition, and probably we can share some findings on possible treatment in our region. Do email me at bargead{at}gmail.com.

hello there and thanks for your feedback

when i first started this topic i didn't think that many people will reply

but i guess that many people around the world have vision problems of all sorts and i think we are many..millions actually according to researches around the worl

i have the same settings apart from the voice over short cut since i don't use it almost at all just sometimes the "speak" feature which isn't necessary to activate the voice over settings

as i described on my first post when i started the thread

the settings and the way that you zoom is different and i am not talking about the gestures needed so as to zoom in and out..i am talking that that sometimes the window goes t full screen and some others on half the screen

obviously this can be handy when you use the keyboard so as to see what you type..but sometimes it gets a bit annoying

i think some lagging issues have stopped since the last two updates

maybe..i am just assuming here

its a new way that apple is trying to introduce for the zoom accessibility and since we have get used to the old way..we find it difficult to adapt to the new way??

just thinking... have to make clear though that i am trying and obviously iOS and OS X have saved my life..especiallywhen i got partially sighted

since you mentioned your condition

my condition is Leber's Optic Hereditary neuropathy

quite rare and irreversible ) for the time being of course!)

I Too am visually impaired and depended heavily on the ipad's accessibility full screen Zoom feature. This feature worked elegantly, smoothly and without glitches in ios 7. In ios 8 the accessibility options for the visually impaired have been crippled by overly complicating added features which do not work. The small round magnifier, the vertical magnifying window mode, the horizontal window mode and the typing window mode are all useless. but that is not even the problem. The problem is the black outlned magnifier window that pops up when you double tap and will not deactivate without going through a circus of actions.

i cannot put into words without screaming how annoying this is and what it has done to my productivity. I was able to accomplish tasks quickly in ios 7 now what took a minute could take 15 to 20 and since the glitches in the zoom cause lag and frozen screens it could be hours later before i accomplish the task i set out to accomplish. Not to mention wasting a saturday afternoon expressing my discontent and searching for a resolution to the issue.
