hello all,
The purpose of this post is simply to offer an alternative in the meantime while apple learns to code. Jk. That was a little much. Anyway, for a long time I've used an app called Infuse 3 by FireCore, https://appsto.re/us/-4KzI.i. By used I mean I had it installed. It was the only app that displayed metadata to any movie file you dropped into it. It would download and display it. It was very useful before I started adding metadata directly to the file before syncing. The reason I recomend it now is because most of us are concerned with how our video files look and this app does a nice job of compensating for things the native app lacks. It is not free, but in addition to the mentioned features it also supports DTS audio, most video formats, downloads subtitles, artwork, and movie info. Additionally it has advanced support for gestures, and connects to servers (plex, xbmc, etc). So in my eyes, it's worth it.
differences:
-all videos are on one screen. There's no tab to separate movies from tv shows or home videos.
-Tv shows are separated by season, so as you'll see in the screenshot I'm posting, the same show with more than one entry. ie, Flintstones. I don't love it, but I can live with it for now.
-Once you press on a season, you'll be able to choose an episode. Each episode will have a screenshot auto generated. Looks nice.
-all video artwork will have the same shape regardless of the shape you inserted into the file. So even though I have square art for the Flintstones, it still shows a rectangle. But it looks nice. Plus this might be better for those of you who have rectangular artwork for the shows already. The reason this happens is because it uses artwork from tvdb. Which is all rectangular Posters.
-you can view items already synced with iTunes, through the video app. Or just drop the files directly into the app, through iTunes. Or download directly inside the app from a server. Or all of the above. Very versatile.
This is in no way meant to ignore the problem with the native app. That still needs to be fixed. In the meantime however this looks a lot better than a bunch grey boxes. I'd like to mention that the developer has said they're planning folders for a future upgeade which would be nice to be able to separate video type (movie, tv show) or just for better organization overall.
in the attachments you'll see how the same videos look right now in the native video app and in infuse. You'll notice the only one that you can see in the native app is the home video, but you can see it in Infuse. Lastly, one of the attachments is a "list view" in which you'll get every file sorted by name, with a screenshot to the left of it.
i Hope this can help us wait without having to look at the ugly native one. Remember all of mine have the right size artwork added so the screenshots are not too bad in the native app, but if you do NOT have artwork it WILL generate a screenshot in infuse. Maybe in the future they'll add tabs or some kind of division between video types and we can ditch the native one all together.
any questions, let me know...

remember, in my attachments you're seeing screenshotsfrom both apps so that you can see how the same file looks on each app...
