TV Show Art / Thumbnails Missing On IOS 8

Gear: iPad Mini, 1st Gen, iPad Air 3rd Gen, iPhone 5S all upgraded to IOS 8.

ITunes 11.4 on iMac.

I have ripped TV shows with metadata and art that show fine in iTunes and worked fine on IOS 7 and iTunes 11.3 and before.

Now after syncing I have TV shows with just a grey square where the art would show on ALL my iDevices. I've done the following to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Removed the TV Shows from iTunes. Rebooted the iMac and re-imported the TV shows back to iTunes. Art and metadata show fine in iTunes, but upon sync to any of my iDevices the shows copy over fine but without the art. Each of my iDevices has its own iTunes library.

2. I've rebooted my iDevices and I've erased all content from my iPhone and did a fresh setup with a fresh iTunes library, yet the art/thumbnails don't copy over to the device.

3. I ripped a brand new TV Show that had never been in my library and that too, did not copy over the show art, but it does show in iTunes.

I'm not sure if this is an IOS 8 problem specifically but I'm leaning towards that. It may also be a an iTunes 11.4 issue. Nevertheless the shows do play but it's just annoying that the show art isn't showing on any devices.

If you've got a remedy I haven't done in steps 1-3 above please let me know.

Thanks.

Add me to the list. Managed to get the 'TV Show' artwork back by changing them all to square dimensions (what a waste of my time) but the thumbnails for each episode are still missing.

My 3 year old is going crazy as he can't find any of his favourites! Not happy.

My other problem, still related to iTunes and poss iOS 8 is that a number of my movies and TV Shows (movies downloaded using Disney Movies Anywhere directly with iTunes) sync EVERY time i do a sync to my iPad......that means even if they are already on there and I just want to add say 1 song, then the sync redownloads ALL the movies/shows to the iPad again - which takes ages.

Support tickets left for both issues. C'mon apple - these issues are spoiling my enjoyment of too many of your devices! Don't get me started on issues i'm having with home sharing and airplay speakers since Yosemite and iTunes 12......

Same issue happening for me since I updated to IOS8. Managed to get back the TV show artwork by making the icons square (under 600x600 pixels), but icons for individual movies do not show up at all. Here you have some screenshots from other forums, which show exactly what happens to my content in both iPad and iPhone since OS8:

This is absolutely ridiculous! All my media files were working flawlessly before this update, and they all showed lovely icons even when they didn't have artwork attached (in those cases it would show a frame of the video in question). Make no mistake, this is a BUG, despite what they may say.

Now, where can I report this issue? Is there a form where I can tell them to fix this issue? This makes my IOS devices look worse than my friend's Android phone, frankly. Apple needs to fix this mess.

Just to toss a little something out here, although all of this so far is just putting bandaids on a problem that we know Apple should not only fix, but should not have caused to begin with.

I had relabelled all my "DVD backup Copies" from "Home Videos" to "Movies" in order to maintain the vertical rectangular artwork originally applied. Then I just added a "ZZ" in the front of every backup copy title name in the "sort" field to keep them from scattering themselves in amongst the purchased titles.

That's just for review in case anyone cares.

My new contribution, for what its worth, is that when I made backup copies of my few TV show DVDs, I originally tagged the episodes as "Home Videos", and they continue to reside in the Home Video bin where they continue do that thing where they pick out a frame about 8-10 seconds in as artwork in a "widescreen" format.

Just that I'd mention it.

iPhone 5s (32GB Verizon), upgraded to iOS 8.1.1 earlier this week, and now I'm having the "random missing artwork" issue with many of my albums (don't have enough videos to see if it's a problem there).

Most of my music is ripped from CD to AAC using XLD on my Mac mini (and therefore encoded using CoreAudio, exactly what iTunes itself uses), running Yosemite and iTunes 12. I specifically use iTunes to embed artwork (either copy-paste from GIMP or added via the "Add Artwork..." button) in order to ensure that it is properly recognized by iTunes and my iPhone.

The missing artwork is totally random - for example, out of five albums from one artist, three have artwork and two don't.

Somewhat related to this, when using Home Sharing (itself still riddled with bugs, and this being a new one), the artwork will only show on the lock screen for the first track - from the second track on, there's nothing...unless I hit pause, and then it instantly appears, and stays there for the remainder of that track.

This is massively inconvenient and the fact that Apple has not fixed this to date suggests that they may not. From a business point of view, Apple sales are outstripping the competition despite the restrictions IOS places on its users, so why should they if it encourages people to purchase TV shows from them rather than elsewhere. With this type of arrogant hegemony, it's really no wonder that many users jailbreak their devices.

I have done some testing and came upon a sloppy workaround. You would need some image processing software - I use Adobe Photoshop. Perfectly square cover art works (I've tested up to 700 x 700). But the problem is that for those who rip their own DVDs, DVD art is not square. Using Photoshop or something similar you can make the art square while preserving the aspect ratio by adding while space on either side of a portrait image. In Photoshop this is as simple as expanding the canvas to a size equal to the height of the image. Of course you will also need to know how to extract the image from the video files and write the new image back. I'm doing this under windows and use Tag&Rename. I'm sure there is a Mac equivalent or you can probably do this directly in iTunes.

The result looks good on my iPhone but rather funky (in a not so good way) in iTunes and it may be a reasonable solution for those with only a few TV series to sync. In my case my TV show library is 1.06 TB and there is no way I will be doing this for each item.

Yet another lousy ios 8 related bug. Man, this iOS has got to be one of the worst buggiest releases ever. It even affects their own TV shows from the store. In the videos app I set my iPhone so it displays all my purchases. If I go to a TV show and select 'complete my series' link to show other available episodes possible to buy it is hit or miss whether the thumbnail or snapshot shows at all or has the generic grey icon/pic. Pretty lousy.

also hate this when I use home sharing from itunes running on my pc. Many TV shows thumbnails now missing because of this. It's a slightly different issue but they also messed up the 'remote' app. If I use that to control my iTunes library and select a song I get no album picture now Like it used to (I'm talking about the playing now view rather than the list views.

BUgs, bugs, bugs everywhere. Why do apple have to mess around and break what wasn't broken? I sincerely hope they start giving ios releases longer cycles in future. A new iOS everywhere to couple new hardware is way too much and clearly the cause for too many bugs as the QA testing is lack lustre. They should let an ios really mature. Ios 7 was fab (but still had issues) and I would of liked to see it getting a two or three year run. Maybe they will sort some of these things out in ios 8 but in all likelihood no sooner does ios 8 get acceptable then ios 9 will get rammed down our throats and the bug cycle will start again!!

cntryman88,

We have managed to recover the artwork for "Movies". We have managed to recover the main artcard for "TV shows" if you manually change the artcard in your TV shows to a 600x600 square image.

Still, the icons for each individual show look like broken grey icons.

The same happens for "Home Videos" and "Music Videos":

This problem persists and has not been addressed by Apple. Note that the artwork and thumbnails for videos and TV shows worked flawlessly for me since my first iPod Touch and IPhone experiences half a decade ago. Why something this simple would stop working, and frankly making the IOS interface look like something out of the original 1980s Macintosh is a puzzle to me.

Not happy about this.
