TV Show Art / Thumbnails Missing On IOS 8

Gear: iPad Mini, 1st Gen, iPad Air 3rd Gen, iPhone 5S all upgraded to IOS 8.

ITunes 11.4 on iMac.

I have ripped TV shows with metadata and art that show fine in iTunes and worked fine on IOS 7 and iTunes 11.3 and before.

Now after syncing I have TV shows with just a grey square where the art would show on ALL my iDevices. I've done the following to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Removed the TV Shows from iTunes. Rebooted the iMac and re-imported the TV shows back to iTunes. Art and metadata show fine in iTunes, but upon sync to any of my iDevices the shows copy over fine but without the art. Each of my iDevices has its own iTunes library.

2. I've rebooted my iDevices and I've erased all content from my iPhone and did a fresh setup with a fresh iTunes library, yet the art/thumbnails don't copy over to the device.

3. I ripped a brand new TV Show that had never been in my library and that too, did not copy over the show art, but it does show in iTunes.

I'm not sure if this is an IOS 8 problem specifically but I'm leaning towards that. It may also be a an iTunes 11.4 issue. Nevertheless the shows do play but it's just annoying that the show art isn't showing on any devices.

If you've got a remedy I haven't done in steps 1-3 above please let me know.

Thanks.

I have the same problem too. 95% of my video thumbnails are missing. For some reason, the music videos are ok. I notice the music app is also messed up; each playlist is missing its cover album and all artists no longer have the "special" photo of them in the Artist tab.

I tried removing the videos from my iPhone 5 and transferred them back via iTunes but the thumbnails are still missing. What gives, Apple?!

Hi, I have been trying to solve the issue with missing art on TV shows since September last year when iOS 8 was first released. I have a large library of videos on my iPad that I have tagged as TV shows as I found this the best way to organize them.

Yesterday, I updated to iOS 8.2 and it seems to have solved the issue with showing the art forTV shows, except that on the level of individual episodes it still does not show the TV art that I have assigned to that episode as part of the metadata. Instead iOS 8.2 now assigns it some random frame from the video as the icon that shows up on the iPad. No matter what I do, iOS 8.2 will not show up any TV art that I assign to that TV episode. I tried all sizes and dimensions of jpgs (square, rectangular etc.) and it still does not work. I even tried software such as Subler to embed the metadata into the video file and this works to show the correct TV art as the icon on my Mac, but when I load it onto the iPad, it still does not show up. Anybody have any suggestions how to fix this?

Yeah I just noticed this also; I presume it was due to iOS 8.2. Any new shows that are synched to the iPad have an image generated/inserted for the episode now. Previously synched files aren't 'fixed' (need to be resynched).

Still need to manually add the square artwork to all episodes within a season in iTunes.

No way to add your own episode image. Still; better to have some image there than none at all.

Same problem AND some of my (ripped) TV shows are synced together under one greyed placeholder which is nameless... some TV-Shows which appear in iTunes (and ATV) under the same show name are mixed together with others on my iPad; for others a correct "folder" is created under the correct show name.

I have looked under "get info" if they have different tags and, if so, deleted them (episode id, etc.). Finally, I restored the iPad but to no success...

Try using meta<browser> with the iTunes saver plugin. That will collect the meta data and properly save it into the mp4 file. From there, I drop them in to iTunes, and then select all the shows relating to a particular season. In the top left corner, I drop in a square artwork image from this site; http://bendodson.com/code/itunes-artwork-finder/

Once that is done, I sync/copy to my iPad, and iOS 8.2 places a random frame in the episode listing.

Thank you for your advise - though - I am not sure if I understand what you mean with "using meta<browser> with the iTunes saver plugin". I am using metaX or iFlicks2 to (re)tag files if not possible via "Get info" in iT. My TV Shows library in iTunes holds about 7500 shows - retagging them would be quite a task, especially as I had no problems with syncing prior updating to Yosemite and iOS8...

The beauty of meta<browser> is it is fully automated.

The creator (fatal) has also indicated he will be fixing the plugin to pull square images for the iTunes saver plugin. Currently you need to do this manually yourself in iTunes. Once fixed, it should essentially be;

* Run meta<browser> on your collection. As long as they are in the correct folder structure and naming convention, this will download and embed the metadata automatically, and rename files if so desired.

* Drop them in to iTunes.

* Done.

......totally just noticed your on a Mac. ignore my post then 🙂

After doing trying out a lot of different options I got it to work with PNG instead of JPG.

If you save the artwork as PNG it works with portrait as well as landscape as well as small as well as big sizes.

However, it seems the ratio width to height shouldn't be less than 70%

So for portrait artwork for example 311 x 495 (width x height) does not work.

The width is only 62% of its height.

But when adding a little space to the width so that it is 347 x 495 (width x height) it does work nice.

The width is then 70% of its height.

Maybe Apple, being the high quality company in everything they do might be standardizing on lossless PNG across the board.

And only making sure PNG works, if PNG works, they are happy.

It is a shame jpg does not work and that it is so picky on width/height proportions.
B but maybe this is at least one sort of solution.

Hope this works for more people.
