TV Show Art / Thumbnails Missing On IOS 8

Gear: iPad Mini, 1st Gen, iPad Air 3rd Gen, iPhone 5S all upgraded to IOS 8.

ITunes 11.4 on iMac.

I have ripped TV shows with metadata and art that show fine in iTunes and worked fine on IOS 7 and iTunes 11.3 and before.

Now after syncing I have TV shows with just a grey square where the art would show on ALL my iDevices. I've done the following to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Removed the TV Shows from iTunes. Rebooted the iMac and re-imported the TV shows back to iTunes. Art and metadata show fine in iTunes, but upon sync to any of my iDevices the shows copy over fine but without the art. Each of my iDevices has its own iTunes library.

2. I've rebooted my iDevices and I've erased all content from my iPhone and did a fresh setup with a fresh iTunes library, yet the art/thumbnails don't copy over to the device.

3. I ripped a brand new TV Show that had never been in my library and that too, did not copy over the show art, but it does show in iTunes.

I'm not sure if this is an IOS 8 problem specifically but I'm leaning towards that. It may also be a an iTunes 11.4 issue. Nevertheless the shows do play but it's just annoying that the show art isn't showing on any devices.

If you've got a remedy I haven't done in steps 1-3 above please let me know.

Thanks.

I have the same problem too. 95% of my video thumbnails are missing. For some reason, the music videos are ok. I notice the music app is also messed up; each playlist is missing its cover album and all artists no longer have the "special" photo of them in the Artist tab.

I tried removing the videos from my iPhone 5 and transferred them back via iTunes but the thumbnails are still missing. What gives, Apple?!

I had the same problem. That was my fix: I deleted the show in iTunes. Then opened the episodes with "Subler" (tagging software). Added informations for "Artist", "Album", "TV Show", "Sort Album" and "Sort TV Show" (I don't know if these all are necessary) - all the name of the tv-show. Then I added the shows in iTunes. After syncing on iPad all looks fine.

Odd. So I have two TV Show series on my iPhone 5S that have been jacked up since I started this thread. After the IOS 8.2 update I opened my iTunes iPhone 5s library (as I have several). I just moved those TV Shows out to my iMac desktop. I then deleted them from iTunes. I did a sync. They're gone from my iPhone. I copied them back into iTunes and did a sync. All TV Show episodes then copies back to my iPhone. Both series cover art is there and below each episode has a frame grab just like TV Show used to. I haven't done this on my iPad yet for lack of time, but I'm sure it will work on that device as well.

Interesting as this is not what I am seeing. Are you working with downloaded purchased content or self-ripped MP4 from your own DVD's? I do exactly as you yet as you can see from the attached, My opening TV Shows screen shows two series, Perry Mason and the Twilight Zone. When you select Perry Mason, look below and see that the two episodes listed under it are one PM episode, and a Star Trek episode. The TZ episode went under its own series OK.

Odd indeed. My TV shows are my own rips. However, they do have the correct metadata as I use iFlicks to import the art and provide the metadata before transferring to my library.

Your pic is indicative of incorrect metadata. If you look at the info in your ST E21 its all correct? I see the episode name is correct but is the show name incorrect within E21?

It seems to be fixed on my iPhone and iPad Mini... where I'm having the problem is with my son's iPod Touch (latest model) and the Star Wars Rebels TV Show, which is a store purchase.

While the TV episodes are in the cloud, they show with their artwork; however, as soon as they complete downloading, the artwork disappears and is replaced by the familiar grey "missing artwork" box.

Here is the fix to separate the TV Shows from each other. I took Goldregen's advice above and used Subler (a free download; 0.31 is the most current version, be sure to upgrade if you download an older version as the newest version has MANY MORE tags available than prior versions):

Before:

NO ARTIST TAG in the tags causes the TZ and PM episodes to show together in error as two episodes under TZ:

When you touch the TZ icon above you see this: a TZ episode and a PM episode (which should not be there, it should be separated as its own TV Show):

Now the fix: add the ARTIST tag to the PM episode:

And see the result when loaded to the iPhone:

That's the only tag needed to be added. Try as I might, with the removal of the ability to get to the older Get Info entry screen with the latest version of iTunes 12, I don't see any other way to add the Artist tag to a TV Show within iTunes, so Subler serves that purpose easily. If anyone knows of the way to get that tag in in a more "within iTunes" manner, please pass it along!

Happy tagging!!

I think I may have found a solution. In my library, all of the shows were grouped together except for one, so I went to see what the difference was. And the only difference I could fine was that the "Director" field under "Sorting" was filled in. And it seems if you populate Director with any data, everything returns to normal and shows sort themselves out separately on your iOS device as they should. If there is a logic to this, I don't know what it is... but it seems to sort the matter out.

GGood work on the 'director' advise, I wondered why when I browse my iTunes library using home sharing on my iPhone the TV shows are a total mess. All over the place. Not good having to add a director to a TV series/shows thought. I have hundreds of ripped shows from my dvd collection. Will take ages to fix. Why did apple have to mess with that? On ios7 it all looked normal
