Edit buttons will only edit in slug?

Basically the edit buttons, insert, overwrite, etc, will only ever edit in slug. If i have a picture clip selected in the source window and I drag it across, then the edit options appear over the project window and by selecting one of them I can make a picture edit. But this is the only way. If I have audio in the source window then the drag option is not available and I have to use the edit buttons on the screen or on the keyboard, but when I do, the only thing that ever appears in my timeline, whatever source is selected, is SLUG! What the **** is going on? I've deleted my preferences, been through everything I can think of, even tried loading up my version of FCP 3, but that did the same thing so the problem must be deep in the shared code; the only thing I haven't yet tried is a reinstall.

If any of you know what is happening to me and how I can fix it I would be very grateful to know. I've been through the previous discussions and can find no reference to anyone else having a similar problem. Cheers

try this. put a sequence in the canvas, load a clip in the viewer.

Make sure the track connectors are all closed. Make sure there is audio on the clip in the viewer.

Find a place to put the clip in the sequence. hit the "i" button.

Play the clip in the viewer, mark in and out points.

Now, here's the fun part: press f9

do the video and both audio tracks go to the sequence?

Even if they didn't, you should stop dragging stuff around-- it's a sloppy way to work.

Funny - that's the sort of thing my mother used to say when I was a kid . . .
I can hear her now . . . "stop dragging your feet - it's sloppy"

. . . All those years ago . . .
. . . she was actually preparing me for FCP.

What foresight that woman had.

Thank you, but the slug problem is present if I edit using the keyboard shortcuts. Sloppy it may be, but dragging is the only way I can edit a picture at present and editing with audio clips is impossible. Any other ideas?
