iPhone Cellular Calls option is missing on iPhone 5, iOS 8

Hello everyone,

I upgraded my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 and discovered that the option “iPhone Cellular Calls” in Settings > FaceTime is missing. It should be there, as the iPhone 5 is among the devices that support that feature. The Handoff option (General > Handhoff & Suggested Apps) is there as normal.

I phoned Apple and they suggested me to install iOS 8 again. I did it several times, configuring my iPhone as a new device too, without success: the option is still not there. My wife has got an iPhone 5c and that option was visible and on from the very beginning after upgrading to iOS 8.

Anyone with the same issue?

Yes, I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 8 too and the "iPhone Cellular Calls" option shown in a paste picture below is missing in settings on my phone. I wanted to be able to use this feature to make and receive calls from my mac using my iPhone as the conduit as promised and can't seem to get it to work. Well, glad someone else is having the same issue so I know it's not just my phone. It is strange because my mother has the same phone as me and I upgraded her phone to iOS 8 and she has the iPhone Cellular Calls setting. Wacky!

Well, did a little research and here is my best guess as to what is happening: I'm thinking that the iPhone needs to be able to see something on the wifi network that it can have "continuity" with and, if it finds something, then it shows the "iPhone Cellular Call" setting. If it doesn't, then the setting is missing.

For me, I have only my iPhone 5 and my macbook air with OS Mavericks on the same wifi with both signed into the same iCloud account. But my iPhone 5 does not show the "iPhone Cellular Call" setting. I'm thinking this is because OS Mavericks must not have the continuity feature and so I must upgrade to Yosemite on my macbook Air and then the feature would show up on my iPhone. That is, my phone thinks there is nothing it can have continuity with on my wifi network and so it doesnt show the "iPhone Cellular Calls" setting.

For my mother, who has the "iPhone Cellular Calls" feature on her iPhone 5 showing, she has the same set up as me, but she also has an iPad Mini with iOS 8 on it....so the iPad Mini with iOS 8 must signal the iPhone through the wifi network that Continuity can be used and so the iPhone then reveals the "iPhone Cellular Calls" setting.

That's my theory anyway. Would be great if somebody can confirm or discount my theory with their own setup thoughts.

Catalin81 seems to confirm your theory but there are still some incongruences as far as can I see.

This is the situation at my place, also in the light of your theory:

My iPhone 5 is the only device I own that can have Continuity (until I upgrade my Mac to Yosemite) so it is logical for “iPhone Cellular Calls” not to show BUT the same should happen with “Handoff” and does not.

My wife’s iPhone 5c is the only device she owns that can have Continuity because she’s got an old Retina iPad which indeed does not qualify for the feature (“iPhone Cellular Calls” is not there, Handoff is not there) BUT the option “iPhone Cellular Calls” is showing on her iPhone and should not.

So, before I can confirm the solution of this issue (when Yosemite becomes available for download) I would have a question to Catalin81 (coming in the following post)…

Albin, my understanding is that the "iPhone Cellular Calls" setting only appears on the iPhone and not the iPad so I'm thinking your wife's iPad triggered your wife's iPhone to show the "iPhone Cellular Calls" setting. Another odd thing: My mother's iPad was shut down and the "iPhone Cellular Calls" setting on her iPhone remained. Also, the handoff setting does appear on my iPhone.

Hmmmmm, Im going to try out my mother's continuity setup later today when I see her and I will write later with the results.

I really would like to get this figured out as it would be great for my work to make quick calls through the computer using my cell account.

One other possibility: Maybe it is the iPhone 5, seems everybody on this thread is using iPhone 5....Im getting the iPhone 6+ next week so maybe that will make a difference....of course Catalin81 appears to have fixed the problem with my theory so who knows.

Could you have a look today whether or not “iCloud Drive” is active on your mother’s devices?

Should “iCloud Drive” play no role in this matter, I think this could be the description of what happens:

A device with iOS 8 will show no Continuity options if it is not compatible with them (see my wife’s iPad).

If it is compatible, it will show “Handoff” while “iPhone Cellular Calls” will only be shown if it detects by Apple that its owner has got another one or more devices with the latest OS, that are registered with the same Apple ID. It will not check if the other devices are “active” (in the same network, for instance) or if they are effectively compatible with the new features. That would explain why my wife’s iPhone is showing the “iPhone Cellular Calls” option even if she cannot use it (because her iPad, running iOS 8, is not compatible with Continuity at all). A bit inconsistent (because Handoff should at least be treated the same way) but plausible.

Anyway, let’s wait and see what you find out today with your mother’s devices…

After doing some tests and thanks to your help I now have a clear picture of what happens.

I installed the last preview of Yosemite on a disk partition of an old iMac (which is still capable of running it).

If I log into FaceTime on the Mac with my Apple ID without signing into iCloud, there is no possibility to receive and make calls (and the “iPhone Cellular Calls” option does not appear on my iPhone).

But if I also sign into iCloud on the Mac, both options (there is one on the Mac in the FaceTime Preferences too) magically appear. Finally “iPhone Cellular Calls” is visible (and on) on my iPhone and I can make and receive calls from my Mac. It works!

As soon as I sign off iCloud on the Mac, both options disappear.

So every device you own (signed into your iCloud account) checks with Apple if there are other devices running the latest operating system (iOS 8 & OS X Yosemite) on which you are also signed into iCloud with your Apple ID. It does not check if those devices really support Continuity features. That explains why the option is visible on my wife’s iPhone, although her iPad cannot make and receive calls. That was the missing link.

The devices must be on the same network to communicate with each other but the main thing for the options to appear is that they are all signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID. At first glance it seems odd that the Handoff feature is treated differently (regardless of the existence of more devices) but there must be a reason, of course.

Greetings to all.
