iPhone 6 Motion Calibration Always Using Location Services

hi

just received my iphone6 and is updated to ios8.

IVe noticed that the location services was constantly on so went through each item which was enabled for location sharing and disabled one by one. I discovered that under Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Motion calibration was purple. As soon as I disabled it location sharing icon switched off. As soon as i enabled it it came back on again and the purple icon showed up next to motion calibration meaning it was in use.

So my question....what is motion calibration and why is it constantly using location services??

thanks

Same here, brand new iPhone 6, set up without backup.

I did the reset of location services/ without any luck. Calibration keeps going.

i Just wish we knew if this was a bug of some sort or supposed to be this way. the battery of my 6 seems to be draining relatively fast. I don't really do anything with it cause I'm still waiting for my SIM card, yet i can see the battery drop precents every few minutes..

I think that Rinford might be right. I recently bought an iphone 6+, updated to ios 8.1 and experiencing same behaviour about motion calibration. I set up an appointment at genius bar for tomorrow evening, will report what genius will tell me. Anyway im not seening any excessive battery drain here...Motion calibration should be related to coprocessor M8,to the step counter and the barometer stuffs.

UPDATE: i left the service always on and yesterday i noticed that motion calibration wasnt always active as usual. It activated randomly just for a cople of seconds. As i made an appointment with a genius here in Italy, i went to the apple store anyway, even if the problem seemed solved. I explained to him the situation and that the service used to be always on until the day before. He took the phone with him and went to a private room. He came back after 10 mins and told me that he checked some internal documents in order to answer me. In his opinion the phone runs perfectly, proven by the fact that he ran some diagnostics as well and everything was ok. He said that motion calibration is a service that provides compass functionality, barometer, step counter and stuffs like that. He didnt mention the coprocessor M8. I asked him what was the reason that made the service always on until the day before. He told me that he didnt know the answer to this question, maybe it was some app that required that kind of service. In the end i asked him to report this happening to the programmers and he answered that he will certanly do that. I went back home and after few hours i found out that the service was again still always on. As im writing here the service is still on. I dont know if the genius made a reset of the location services resetting motion calibration data as well, anyway im still of the opinion that this service generate a profile of the user based on few days pattern analisys. For sure there's no HW issue, it might be something software related. I hope that Apple will give more detailed info about it or optimize the service with an ios update.

I have the same problem with the Motion Calibration Arrow always on! The Italian customer service told tme o try some resetting, but they didn't fix the problem. Then they told me to reset the iPhone as new iPhone. Now my iPhone 6 has been reset yesterday as a new iPhone and the motion calibration arrow appears very rarely. But in this case I must install every old app one by one and I loose the data stored in the apps.

My theory:

The M8 coprocessor can count your steps.

But how does it know how far your average stride is?

So if the M8 counts 100 steps and the GPS says you've gone 100m then it can average your stride

So I think this Motion calibration is calibrating how far your strides are and how high your stairs are

Until it does that it's probably on a lot

People turn it off and it still counts your steps and guesses your distance

so my guess is it's temporary. This is conjecture though.
