iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Ever since upgrading to IOS 8, including IOS 8.01, 8.02 and 8.1 I had the wellknown Wifi issue.

wifi speeds dropping from 120mbps to about 2mbps @ 5ghz in within a minute after connecting to the wifinetwork. often i couldn't even surf at all. but the wifi signal was always strong.

With every update i was hoping for a solution from Apple but it never came.

Tried everything that can be found on the internet.

Resetting the network settings.

Disabling "wifi networking" under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.

Reinstalling my Ipad from scratch

Used different routers and different setups.

Automatic ip's and fixed ip's and different dns servers just to be sure.

Nothing worked. The only workaround is switching to a 2.4Ghz network.

So i was doing some tests and found THE solution, but i don't like it all.

One of the biggest changes in IOS 8 is the ability to use airplay without a network. by using a wifi connection in combination with bluetooth.

And here lies the problem.

I disconnected al my Airplaydevices from my network. Denon AV-amplifier AVR2113, Pioneer wireless speaker XW SMA3 and an airport express.

Et voila... My Ipad is back to normal. fast... no very fast internet connection and stable as ****. Just like iOS 7 was.

Working with it for a couple of hours now without any trouble at all.

But do i connect one Airplay device to the network the wifi is not stable anymore and extremely slow again on my ipad air.

My Macbook running mac os x mavericks doesn't have these issues, neither does my iphone 5S. and they are also on the same 5ghz network.

So I can create and recreate the issue and create a work around... Apple please come with a solution that makes me able to use airplay an ipad (on ios8) on a 5ghz network! like in iOS 7!!!!

This worked for me for both my iPad 2 and iPad Mini. Don't have an iPhone.

Go to: Your WiFi Network

Click on: WiFi Settings

Delete your DNS settings.

Change DNS setting to Google's: 8.8.8.8 If you don't want to use Google's DNS....Try: Open DNS settings: http://www.opendns.com/ This works as well but not as fast as Google.

Give it a moment to activate and Voila it worked for me for the last 5 hours. You may have to restart or turn WiFi on and off if it doesn't activate within a minute or two.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Thank you!

I actually discovered this was a firewall issue. I use pfSense for my home firewall and I have Snort installed. Snort was flagging the iPhone 6 for a DOUBLE DECODING ATTACK for every website I visited and blocking access to that site from the iPhone. Here's what I could find about this error:

http://www.aldeid.com/wiki/Snort-alerts/http_inspect-DOUBLE-DECODING-ATTACK

This appears to be a common false positive, but it is not triggered by my iOS 7 devices or my Macbook. I hope this does not happen as I'm traveling when I have no choice what firewall is being used.

Hi guys, i've been experiencing the same wifi problem with my iphone 5s since upgrading to ios 8, and now my iphone 6 is the same.

Been trying all the solutions here (reset network, restore phone, set up as new, turning off wifi networking, etc), but the problem keeps getting back in no time.

Here is what i've been doing, and it seems to work fine with all my iDevices using iOS 8:

- Whenever you are using WiFi, turn off your "mobile/celluar data", and make sure your "bluetooth" is also off.

- Or you can simply turn "Airplane Mode", then turn your WiFi back on. (but this option will make you cannot receive phone calls/sms)

That solution has been working for me for 3 days, just remember to turn your mobile/celullar data back if you dont have WiFi connection anymore.

It looks like WiFi Connection cannot be working with Celullar Data at the same time. Is it related to apple's so called "seamless Wi-Fi Calling"?

Let's hope apple fix this soon!

OK, I have now reset my iPad2 to v 7.1.2

It was easy, see this link http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/09/20/how-to-downgrade-ios-8-to-ios-7-1-2/

All the issues I had are now resolved.

However, despite backing my iPad up in iTunes (I foolishly assumed it would be an exact mirror) I lost all my Safari desktop icons (I prefer them there to bookmarks) and have had to reload various personalised things such as keyboard shortcuts, I have a Navionics app for sailing, all the saved features were gone.

Setting back to v7.1.2 in fact seems to give you a factory default computer but it didn't take long to reload Mail, Safari Bookmarks, iBooks, Notes and Adress book etc

In my case it was well worth doing.

I have the same exact issue. Happens with my iPhone 5 and iPad Air... every time I hook these up to power outlet, my entire home network comes to a stop (iDevices + PC + Mac lose internet connectivity in spite of full router signal strength).

Yep. This is the exact problem I had. Searching for solutions is how I found this thread.

If my iPhone is plugged in, connected to wifi, and the screen off, the entire home network slows to a complete halt. The router light for the wifi network the phone is on goes crazy. Pull the power out or wake up the phone and the network comes back to life instantly.

I tried the solutions in this thread just in case they were related. No success. My workaround was to disable iCloud Backup. Fixed the problem instantly. Not happy with it, but I can live with manual backups till a fix is hopefully released.

One point to note, I don't think it is iCloud sucking up bandwidth. iCloud backup wasn't actually running at the time on my phone, at least not that I could see. Secondly I looked at my routers stats and during the slow down essentially no data was being passed to and from the internet. It was like the iphone was screwing up the internal network to the point that it would freeze up, but it wasn't actually doing anything.

I don't think this problem is the same one that people are mainly talking about here though.
