iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

xanda1983 said that he was unable to restore his iphone as elcpu suggested due to problems installing itunes on his Windows PC. I said that I do not have problems with itunes on my Windows PCs, but it could be due to a known issue - which turingtest2 provided a solution for. Without resorting to insults

So where have I changed my mind?

Good morning Xanda, as always the time difference catches us. I just got up a half hour ago (~ 8 AM Houston time, a reward of being retired and a "night owl", see my avatar). I found 18 emails overnight from Apple Forum users so I have a few to address.

I will help you get iTunes installed on both PCs, don't worry. Please report back with the Windows version that you and your dad have 7, 8.1 or 10 (I hope you don't have XP). I also need to know the AV software you are both using, McAfee, Norton, etc. and any information you got when you tried to install iTunes, error messages, etc. Please don't touch the registry without my help or that of an expert like tt2, you truly need to know what you are doing when editing the registry as it can render you OS useless. It is essential to have a restore point just in case, and further, a recovery disk and an OS image on an external HD.

I upgraded iTunes on my PC last week and initially it could not get it to work - it is fixed now. Yesterday I responded to another fellow with the same issue and I fixed it for him. Just give me information above and we will resolve it (most likely without any registry edits).

Regards, elcpu

🙂

Do you or do you not agree that everyone who uses W10 is unable to install iTunes (as xanda stated and you have yet to disagree with)

Hi old-chap. turingtest2 (or tt2 as he prefers) is a true expert indeed, not because of his points but because he knows Windows and iTunes inside and out. He is also a gentleman, treats users as such whether the user is a newbie or an expert himself.

He helped me specifically on an iTunes issue iTunes starts with the Welcome screen every time and I could not be more grateful. If I were in London now I would be treating him to a pint.

As it turned out I "paid the favor forward" Re: iPhone 5S does not appear in Windows 8.1 Explorer

There have been issues with iTunes lately, some due to AV software and some due to drivers between W10 and iTunes, usually all solvable.

Cheers....

Good morning, iDevice. Thank you for your post. I watched the YouTube video twice (notepad on hand) and I appreciate you posting it. As a summary (like old_chap's) the video recommends the following steps in this order:

1. Forget Network

2. Reset Network Settings

3. Reboot Router/Modem

4. Perform a Forced Restart

5. Change to Google's DNS

6. Under Privacy > Location Services > System Preferences > turn Wi-Fi Networking OFF

7. Restart the device

8. Restore the device

9. Wait for iOS 9 (interesting that #9 is waiting for iOS 9 !!)

10. Downgrade to an older version of iOS (impossible once the older version is no longer signed by Apple, usually a few days after a new release)

11. Go to an Apple Store

These are not bad recommendations (with the possible exception of 10 after a few days) and I recommend that all users affected by Wi-Fi issues try them first, they have worked for some. Unfortunately, for many others these have been tried over and over with no improvements at all (exception #9 for obvious reasons). Number 9 is eagerly anticipated by many here.

Thanks again,

elcpu

And listed for the 6S:-

"iPhone 6s features 4G LTE Advanced with speeds up to twice as fast as the previous generation.* It supports more LTE bands than any other smartphone. And when you’re connected to Wi‑Fi, iPhone 6s lets you do things like browse the web and download apps at speeds up to twice as fast too."

So the 6S will be faster (and hopefully more reliable) on Wi-Fi

That is until we hear about the disaster that it is, as we do with every other iOS and OS X update or upgrade from a few users

Really optimistc fellow, are you! No doubt we will hear from the disgruntled few who's Wi-Fi was working with 8 but now claim that their 9 ruined their connection. Probably one hour after release when that thread is started. As I mentioned before, there has always been reports of "issues" with Wi-Fi, on every iOS, every Android, every OS X, and as I am clairvoyant with iOS9 as well. I will reserve judgement for a while but I do expect it to be an improvement for me and others. Maybe my glass is half full 😉

Cheers...

Maybe it is but I see no factual base for expecting this upcoming release to be any different from earlier releases. For most people there will be no significant issues bar those of personal taste, cosmetics. Some will have problems, some of them will be with WiFi, some of the latter group will proceed to commence serial posting while proclaiming about the number of posts as if that supports the claim the the OS is the sole cause. And then there are the few who just post obscenities under an ID that belongs to another.

If IOS9 fixes your issue then it will seem as if you are right in your speculations, you will not count the posters who have problems with 9 that did not exist in eight.

plus ca change etc
