That's simply saying that the people who choose to stay here have determined that they "are qualified". The implication from the other poster's statement is that some here are "not qualified". And thus ... "self-selecting" ... means they are saying, "I am qualified."

I think you may be reading something into that which wasn't there in the first place ... :-) ...

It sure is easy to make enemies on this forum. Not all Iphones, Ipads, etc. are going to have the same problems. Each is a separate entity having it's own unique problems. If you guys want to keep chasing the answer to your problem, I wish you the best. What is going on here is called the "shot gun" approach. I don't have the time to look for the Holy Grail. I prefer the "rifle" approach which might mean making an appointment at my local Apple store and taking the phone/pad in to get fixed. Sorry to those who got their apple cart rocked by my words. If you are an Apple Genius please tell everyone how to fix their device so the world will keep turning and rainbows will appear. Don't bother to write me back, there's already enough sarcasm in the world.

I too have this problem. I can't express enough how impactful this is. I utilize notifications for communications. Without the network, i don't get the notices rendering my devices useless for communication notifications. This is more than just annoying, it is impacting my workflow.

This is almost certainly an iOS8 issue. I do not have the problem with my network since i have several other devices actively _using_ the network when my iOS devices can not (until i toggle the setting.) I also never experienced this problem prior to iOS8 while my typical usage has not changed since iOS7.

I recently purchased a new iOS8 device with AppleCare that I am tempted to take it back to Apple for exchange and keep exchanging while this issue persists.

I've performed some analysis of my WiFi network after following iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points and discovered that when my gateway sends DUP packets, it appears to coincide with the problem.

How i analyzed this was to download an iOS app that provides good ping support. I then just pinged 8.8.8.8 on my iOS devices while doing the same from my OS X Yosemite computer. The computer (and AppleTV) seems to adapt to the DUPs without the networking being affected. But at the time the computer identifies the DUP, the iOS device ping times go as high 40s-60s (while the average ping time is ~20-30ms).

Currently, this may just be a coincidence or the appearance of the DUPs is an indication of a different problem that actually causes the problem. I'm going to try a different WiFi gateway and see if i experience the same DUPs and if so, does it cause the same situation on iOS devices.

BTW, the DUPs only occur at a rate of about 3 per 1000 pings.

Yes, i did that over the weekend (even though the device i was using was brand new with 8.1 installed when delivered). I reset the device to factory settings and still had the problem. Prior to that i tried resetting the network preferences. Still persisted.

Personally my (somewhat informed but maybe naive) opinion is that iOS has some network "optimizations" that don't play well in certain unusual/faulty networking scenarios for which a more robust network stack might easily handle.

I am becoming more confident that my problems are related to an issue with my local WiFi (maybe too congested or maybe my gateway is failing). But i also believe that the iOS networking is partly at fault because no other networked device I have exhibits anything remotely close to the problems iOS has on my network, including OS X Mavericks and now Yosemite.

I have just been to the genius bar and have the following information. Every IPad from four back lack the power required by IOS 8. This is what causes the battery drain, the connection failures, the inability to log into public wi-fi, etc.

If you backed up before upgrading you should immediately save everything (sync?)and restore from your backup using IOS 7 or earlier. If not you are apparently out of luck, as Appe has quit signing IOS 7 and before,so you cannot downgrade to an OS appropriate to your unit's capacities.

If you are able to downgrade you may still lose apps that were upgraded to IOS 8 compatibility, and you should not upgrade further aps.

So you have a choice. I really like IOS 8, but the inability to use the IPad for anything other than unit contained information outside of my own werver range is frustrating. I doubt5 that Apple will be happy with the growing discontent of users who find that Apple's actions have invalidated their one or two year old devices without any p;ractical solution, so I imaging they will eventually come up with a solution. Until then you are essentially sol,

Thanks for information. I have iPad 2 and have had IOS 8.0.1 problems since the update from 7. With no public acknowledgement or help from Apple I decided I may as well update to 8.2, because as you say, I was sol anyway. Odd thing is I have not had wifi connection problems.

What continues to happen: Safari freezes up randomly, have to do reset to defrost. When attempting to cc and paste text from web pages to Notes the pasted text may be from something I copied two or three days ago, and nothing I do gets rid of old copied text. I may or may not be receiving all email as I'm getting page(s) of No Subject, 1969-dated mail. This has been intermittent problem for users since at least 2011.

We paid for these devices and Apple should not state that updates will work on older iPads when devices are unable to support them.

"I am using iOS 8.1 on my iPad 4 and don't have a problem with running it. And that means if just one iPad 4 can run it just fine, then they ALL can. The person who told you that obviously had no idea what he was talking about ... :-) .".
The person who told me that was the tech at Apple's San Francisco Genius desk. I suspect he's qualified. He noted that his Ipad 4 was experiencing the same issues. According to him only models from 5 on are powerful enough not to have issues.

If I were at home on my relatively strong signal I would have fewer issues, aside from the battery. Unfortunately I now cannot use many Internet features (like streaming MOOC courses) in places with public wi-fi. In fact I cannot connect to wi-fi,which has to do with speed and time out.
I suspect/hope Apple will address this at some point. It's bad press, and they are extremely sensitive to bad press.

When you say that you downloaded and installed 8.1, you didn't give any details ... as to what version you were on before -- and how you did the download and install ... was it done through iTunes? Also, what backup have you been doing before this installation of the update? And then, after I find that out, I'll have a few other questions.

What I can say for sure, though, is that if you have had your iPad 4 running okay before the install, then you WILL be able to have your iPad 4 running iOS 8.1 without any difficulty! I have an iPad 4 running iOS 8.1 right now. Whatever the problem is at the moment, it can be cleared up.

As it turns out my Ipad is IPad 3/A. The upgrade was to be made available to 4/s and above. I, however, updated on receiving the alert on my IPad, as some of the apps would not function after upgrading.

Hot spot fails and breaks are widely reported. So are battery drain, slower charging, Safari crashes. 8.01 was intended to fix the 8.0 bugs. It probably does for most newer models. A 2.5 year old $1000 device is, I was also told at the genius bar, considered old. Adoption of the new system is now at 52%, which means more dissatisfied customers. Apple still hates bad publicity, so the option of waiting for it to hit the presses (I am doing my bast) remains the only hope for those who upgraded to the wrong system.
