iOS 8 Calendar on iPhone showing GMT times for new events.

Hi everyone,

Since updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 8, the Calendar app now shows all my newly added events with GMT times, and not the local time (as I am not in GMT, I am +9 hours). All my previous and existing entries are displaying normally. I have not changed any settings at all. However, if I open one of the new events and enter the events details screen, the local times are clearly displayed along with a GMT equivalent time underneath it.

I have tried changing settings but nothing shows my events in local time as it did before the upgrade to iOS 8. Any ideas? Is this a bug? Am I missing a new setting? Many thanks in advance for your help or advice.

Cheers,

James.

Add some notes to this, I have managed to correct the issue by going to Settings, 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' and changing the Time Zone Override to London which makes me think the phone thinks the iCal GMail calendar is set to the incorrect time zone (i.e. showing it in your time zone) however having checked the settings my personal calendar is fine. This should work fine until I travel abroad when i have to manually change the time zone override.

This is work in progress, I have gone into my Google calendar and checked the time settings and although set to GMT+00:00 London, I have ticked the display all zones box and changed it to GMT+00:00 GMT (No Daylight Saving) and turned off the above override on the phone and again this has resolved the problem. What I am unsure of is if this will work ok once the clocks change next month! I'll put a note in my calendar to test it.... hmm 😮

I Had similar success on my iPhone. When you change the appointment to all day and then back again, the time is set as the GMT time zone. So you have to change it back to the time you really want the appointment to start at. So if I create an appt at 3:00pm est, the 8:00pm gmt time will show in the body of the appt. when you turn on and off all day, the new time will be in est or your correct time zone but will start at 8pm. You just have to change it back to est or your proper time zone. Hope this makes sense. .

Here's the latest update: Everything is as it was yesterday. (see below)

Both appointments that originated in the Google calendar on my Mac are still at the correct time zone. So it seems that only appointments that are created on the iPhone, and that are attached to the Google calendar, are affected by this bug.

And this jibes with the other posts here. Moving an appointment from one calendar to another on the iPhone is essentially re-creating the appointment on the new calendar, so is affected by this bug. It would also explain the issue I've been seeing with Facebook appointments for a while now, where it shows (GMT) on the entry, because those are created automatically by my phone. I've seen (GMT) on those for at least a month... which makes me suspect that:

1. The bug is within iOS, but

2. Recent changes with Google's calendar service have revealed the bug.

3. Whatever server Facebook appointments are saved on has the same issue, and has had it for a while.

I could see this being a (mis?)configuration on the servers, creating a non-standard environment, and recent iPhone updates has made it more picky (read: engineers saying "if they won't follow the rules, we'll just have it break"). This could be argued to be a "feature" I guess (but those kind of engineers are so annoying to the end user.)

OR: iPhone is creating or misusing some feature or data field in the appointment, and no one else in the universe is creating or misusing this field. This would be definitely a bug. I suspect this is what's happening.

If iOS is setting a field unique to iOS appointments to the value of the server's time zone, and no other device or service creates that field or can read that field, and only other iOS devices can read that field and so manifest the bug... maybe there's some kind of automated "cleaning" script that can strip that particular field out of all the appointments and thus iOS would see it as any other appointment. This might work on Exchange servers where IT can run scripts... but I don't know how to accomplish this on Google calendar.

Same problem. Pretty big problem: GMT pave-overs when generating or editing events on synced gmail calendars from within iOS 8.x. No reasonable solution seems possible until Apple (deep sigh) acknowledges this bug and deigns to fix it. Looks like a low priority on their part though - as this effects lots and lots of iOS users NOT using iCloud for calendar sync we will have to struggle and wait. And wait...

Dec 24, 2014 3:31 PM in response to Gator5000e

I guess I'm just too impatient to go through a multi-step process for each event. Fortunately for me, connecting to my Google account through the Exchange setup has made it so new events on my iPhone retain the correct time and don't revert to GMT. And I have my Google account connect the usual way for all my other calendars (Turning off the main calendar to avoid duplication)

Although I've recently discovered another irksome thing with that setup. Even when I have the calendar turned off, and only one set of events appears in the calendar, I seem to be getting two alerts for each event. As if my iPhone is still giving me alerts even though that particular calendar is disabled.

Strange.

Having read this thread carefully starting on page 13, I concur with your assessment and have reported the bug to Apple, as you suggested.

Thank you, JG in SB, for all of your careful debugging efforts, for your logical approach, and for succinctly outlining the problem as you found it. I ran through a very similar process and discovered the same set of factors contributing to the problem.

For completeness, I have an iPhone 6, an iPad 2 - both running iOS 8.1.2, and a Macbook Pro with Outlook 2011 and using Google calendar. I do not use Exchange. All syncing is done through the applications mentioned. The problem first occurred when I upgraded to the iPhone 6, and showed up on the iPad when I updated it to iOS 8 for the first time. To be precise, I purchased the iPhone 6 and then changed time zones from EDT to Mountain. THAT's when I first noticed the problem.

Again, thank you!

I just spent a chunk of time with Apple 2nd level support (maybe should have pushed for 3rd??

After troubleshooting all kinds of different things, and talking with other 2nd level support for even more creative troubleshooting ideas, I conclude that they really have tried everything they can to resolve this. They believe that, since this issue is ONLY occurring with Google Calendar as a 3rd party, the timezone override issue lies with Google. It seems to them that the issue is not in iOS 8.

Dec 27, 2014 7:22 PM in response to kb122512

@kb122512: I understand you are seeing something similar on a device running iOS 6. There are isolated reports of something that looked like this from 2009. It's entirely possible that there is/was some other issue out there that looks similar to this, and is far less common. Most people report that when they use older iDevices, running iOS 6 or 7, and sync to the very same Calendar accounts, that they do not see this bug show up. That's part of how we have confirmed this is unique to iOS 8. That doesn't mean there is not some other bug, or combination of settings, that could appear in iOS 6 and look similar to this. The current issue appears unique to iOS 8, affects thousands of people, and is widely reported since the iOS update.

Also, to reiterate, the "Time Zone Override" feature in iOS 8 does not actually do anything. You can flip the little switch back and forth, and it changes not a single thing in your calendar or on your iDevice. It is also not documented anywhere in Apple's official user manual for iOS8. It is a likely unfinished component of the operating system which made it into the public release, and it is also highly likely that this not-fully-baked feature is related to the current GMT bug that everyone is seeing.

Well I am back. Good News and Hopeful Response. Was on escalated call will nice woman who said they were very aware of the problem. I finally declined to try to go to gmail calendar settings to fiddle with time zones...

I mainly talked/ vented about this thread (96,000 views, 350 posts) and the youtube video with 2085 views. She said that yes this has a high priority given the many many calls they have had on this issue.

She also took my contact info down and will contact me directly when a bug fix gets ready. She said I could call her directly if I had any more questions or concerns.

I will do a follow up to her with this thread and you tube link.

But bottom line it does seem that they are working on this problem and that is very good news.

While I am over all disheartened about the initial response or lack of response by Apple I am now more hopeful that they are not only listening but working on a fix. Woo Hoo! I get to keep my iStuff.

Naturally I will follow up with this when we see progress.

Thanks again Apple customer service at 800-694-7466

I had encountered this problem before and fixed it... I thought. My family uses google calendar because we were running android and IOS devices and needed a way to keep track of all appointments with one calendar. I don't know if this is the most efficient way but it works for us as I can make a change on one device (phone, tablet, or PC, etc.) and everyone knows of the change in minutes when they look at their calendars. I don't remember what I did but it took several hours of recreating events and checking settings on time zones with google calendar and iPhones and iPads etc. But as of the latest ios 8.1.2 it has returned.

I confirmed this by checking events that were added to the google calendar using my iPad prior to the December update and editing them and checking other devices. I also confirmed this by using an iPhone 4 that runs ios 7.1.2 and adding an event to my google calendar. The iPhone 4 still shows the event at the correct time however when the iPhone 5s and the iPad (both running ios 8.1.2) show the GMT glitch.

I use the Exchange calendar for work as it is tied to my work email account and I have it listed to sync with my iPad and iPhone that run ios 8.1.2. I have tried to get the events to display the GMT glitch by adding on the ios 8.1.2 devices and it works correctly (the GMT is not an issue). It only seems to happen on my devices when I use the google calendar combined with the ios 8.1.2...

I know there are tons of posts and I've been reading for over an hour now. I did not read every single post and I hope not to have to. This GMT issue literally just started today for me on my iPhone 6. I made an appt. on my IOS8 without issue and 10 minutes later created another event (both from my phone with Google as my default Cal) and BOOM, GMT showing up everywhere since the post today. No previous days have been affected. I added events from my Google calendar and it synced perfectly with the phone and did not have any GMT issues, not one which tells me its Apple. It is obviously an iOS issue. I just can't get over the fact that it's not a setting being that I've had NO issues with this, or even heard about this issue, until my problem began late this morning.

Don't know if someone had a fix concerning IOS 8 and Google so I'm just asking if one exists, please advise and I will look further into this on the posts. If not, then I'll wait until an update to fix this extremely annoying issue. Seem to have quite a few of these extremely annoying issues with my brand new million $$$ Iphone 6 !!!!

Jan 2, 2015 12:57 PM in response to JG in SB

Agreed... I went back to when the issue started for me the second time (I had this happen before and fixed it but after the update in December it cam back... only on my iOS 8.1.2 devices) and fixed a few appointments to see if it would work and so far things are good. I am going to do a repeating event and see what happens with that. My wife uses and iPhone 4 with the 7.something iOS and when she enters and appt. no GTM bug happens. When I look at it on my iOS 8.1.2 devices the ugly GMT rears its head! But again, if I toggle the All-day switch it goes away- just remember to fix the time!

You are right when making an entry in Google calendar or move it to Google Calendar the GMT comes back. This solution requires you to only use iCloud & iCal and unfortunately as I just discovered any entries using iCloud as the default using the iPhone or iCal will NOT also show up on your Google Calendar so it's not a solution unless you are ready to ditch Google calendar altogether

if you are willing to switch altogether (which my husband did unbeknownst to me) this could work for you. I'm not wild about this so I'm going to keep looking for a better way.

In response to Devinw go to Settings; Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then scroll down to CALENDARS and at the bottom it will let you change Default Calendar, there you can change your default to one of the iCloud calendars

Well...glad this helps if only a little bit 😉 I can see how that would be maddening....to have everything be just fine and then, without having changed anything on your end....to have this show up seemingly on its own. At least in my case, the server I sync to has always been set to GMT so this showed up immediately when I updated to iOS 8.

When the first groups of people started to report your particular scenario (i.e. they had been OK on iOS 8 and all of a sudden this showed up without them changing anything) we didn't fully understand what causes the bug to show up yet so it was WAY more confusing. That was back in mid-November I think.....

I am cautiously optimistic that this is going to get fixed as part of the 8.1.3 update which is confirmed to be running on iOS devices out there (it is showing up in server logs of various website administrators) and will likely be released to all of us some time this month.

My 12 year old son (future Apple Genius) discovered the solution to this problem, which was affecting my productivity on my iPhone as well. This problem stemmed from the iOS 8 update.

Solution: 1.) Go to your App Store and download the CalenMob app (FREE DOWNLOAD). This is a free app that syncs to your Google calendar.

2.) Open CalenMob and sync your Google Calendar

3.) Enjoy the new layout and the fact that you no longer see that GMT all over the place.

4.) Delete that crappy iCal app. You don't need it anymore.
