iOS 8 Calendar on iPhone showing GMT times for new events.

Hi everyone,

Since updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 8, the Calendar app now shows all my newly added events with GMT times, and not the local time (as I am not in GMT, I am +9 hours). All my previous and existing entries are displaying normally. I have not changed any settings at all. However, if I open one of the new events and enter the events details screen, the local times are clearly displayed along with a GMT equivalent time underneath it.

I have tried changing settings but nothing shows my events in local time as it did before the upgrade to iOS 8. Any ideas? Is this a bug? Am I missing a new setting? Many thanks in advance for your help or advice.

Cheers,

James.

sorry no solution here, just jumping in to say I'm having the same issue on the 6. I hope there is a solution as this is pretty confusing.

Yes. At your suggestion, I just tried setting my phone to another time zone. (I randomly chose Rome, Italy.) I then created a new event for now (11pm in Rome). The event in my calendar now says:

from 11 PM Mon, Dec 29, 2014

to 12 AM Tue, Dec 30, 2014

from 10 PM (GMT) Mon, Dec 29, 2014

to 11PM (GMT) Mon, Dec 29, 2014

And if I try to edit the event, all times are in GMT.

Exactly the same behavior, regardless of which time Zone I am in. I suppose if I set my phone to a city that is exactly in the GMT time zone, then it wouldn't be a problem... except that I don't happen to be in that city.

Thanks for responding so quickly.

The Question: "Have you seen this with any other timezone other than Pacific Time (switching to GMT)?"

Yes. Lots. All over the place. CST, EST etc. European time zones. It is going to do this as long as the time zone on your iOS device is different than the system clock time zone setting on the server that hosts your Calendar account. Google, Exchange, etc. Doesn't matter. If your server's system time clock is set to EST and you are in PST, you will get "(EST)" on your appointments and they will transpose to EST instead of GMT.

Spent hours on this with AppRiver, who then spent hours more on it. They posted an article on their blog about it which fully explains what is happening:

http://blog.appriver.com/2014/12/ios-8-calendar-events-display-dual-time-zones/

This has everything to do with buggy code in the iOS operating system that picks up the system clock setting of whatever server your account is hosted on, and then converts your appointments to that time zone. It affects a range of calendars, not just Google. It has nothing to do with "apple not liking Google." It is just crappy code embedded in iOS and a total lack of any quality testing before release.

For everybody new that is posting on this thread asking questions that have been thoroughly answered previously:

  1. This is due to a BUG in iOS. Not your device settings. Not your server settings. Not everything else on the planet other than Apple. It's buggy code in iOS and only Apple can fix it.
  2. The bug will show up if your local time zone on your iOS device is different than the system time clock setting on the physical server hardware that hosts your calendar account. Not the setting in your user account....I am talking about the clock setting for the physical actual computer on which your user account resides.
  3. The very same bug has been documented on both Google and Exchange environments...the common variable is iOS, not what server you are on.
  4. You could have been fine, changed no settings at all, and then this showed up. This is because the server on which your account is hosted changed (either you were migrated to a new server with a differnet time zone setting, or the time zone setting on your existing server changed)
  5. Apple has confirmed, in writing, that this is caused by a bug in iOS 8. There are copies of their E-mails confirming this above in the thread.

If you call Apple to report this, don't be surprised when the tech tells you "we have never heard of this before." That's BS. There are multiple open cases of this registered with top tier Engineering and Enterprise support at Apple. There are over 88 THOUSAND VIEWS of this thread....which you find when you search for this problem. They have heard of it before and they are full of baloney and just want to get you off the phone. They will blame you, Google, etc. Please cite the above facts presented in 1-5 and make them register your case.

Again the best thing you can do if you are first checking in here is to submit this as a bug report to Apple. Here is the link to do that:

Good luck and pray for a fix in iOS 8.1.3.

I just discovered this thread yesterday and have read through most of it, but it's a lot to keep straight.

I noticed this issue last week when I entered a new event into my iPhone and saw it changed to GMT (I'm in EST). I recently moved my calendars from one Google account to another, so I thought maybe that caused an issue. I do recall this being an issue in the past, but I think the Time Zone Override fix was what took care of it last time.

Anyway, I just want to add that I just now created an event in a Google calendar using iCal on my iMac running Mavericks. The event instantly synced and updated. The time zone appears correctly in iCal on the Mac, correctly in Google Calendar, and as GMT on my iPhone. I'm currently running iOS 8.1.2 on my iPhone. Time Zone Override is OFF on my phone. My Google account is set up using the Google configuration on my iMac and the Gmail configuration on my iPhone.

I can also confirm that the event appears as GMT on my iPad, which is running iOS 7.1.2 and also using the Gmail configuration for the Google account. On my iPad, Time Zone Override is on and set to New York. The times appear correctly when I tap the event, but if I go to edit the details the times are shown in GMT.

Are all the people reporting this problem not using an iCloud default calendar? I am trying to understand the problems i have had with Calendar on my iPhone and with iCloud in the context of the posts on this thread but so far, i am just confused. i want to submit a bug report to Apple but am not sure how to describe it. I'm not sure if i have a different problem from others on this thread, or the same problem.

I have fixed the problem by changing my default calendar from my gmail.com user name to an iCloud calendar, which i created, called All Cloud. I could've used any iCloud calendar for default calendar (i experimented). As long as i use an iCloud calendar, the GMT problem i suddenly started having in mid December on the new iPhone 6 i got on 11/25 disappeared. I totally don't have that problem any more, it's gone.

Is the reason others can't use this solution because for whatever reason, they have to use a non-iCloud calendar as their default calendar, Google Calendar, Exchange, or whatever, anything other than an iCloud calendar? As far as i can tell, the only price i had to pay to get rid of the GMT problem was to stop using my gmail email address user name as my default calendar. Apparently, that has not caused any undesired consequences. i can just as easily use an iCloud calendar as my default calendar, it's really no different from using the gmail related calendar. Unlike others on this threat, i'm guessing, i don't use Google Calendar or Exchange calendar or any non-iClound calendar. i have always just used my iPhone calendar and iCal. I am guessing other people on this thread have a necessity to use one of the non-iCloud calendars as their default calendar. Personally, i was annoyed at having to change my default calendar when this happened with GMT (and two other serious calendar related problems that also were caused by that, i'm puzzled that no one else had those other two problems), and i preferred to keep my gmail user name calendar just because i didn't like to have to change it because of a bug.

So if i want to submit a bug report, what am i actually saying? I would say that a bug in the iOS caused my Calendar to start giving me GMT info that resulted in a confusing and unnecessarily cluttered Calendar interface, that it also caused me to have 30 minute event alerts on every event i entered when i don't want those alerts and have checked 'none' in Settings, and have checked 'none' in the event set up--clearly there is a bug if despite those settings, i still get the 30 minute alert on every event i create, and third, the events i enter in my Calendar on my iPhone do not sync with iCloud and iCal---so i have no back up. None of this happened before in the years i've used iOS, only since i got the new iPhone.. None of this should be happening. If i change my default calendar to one of the iCloud calendars, all these problems immediately and permanently go away, but i want to be able to use my gmail Apple ID as my default calendar and want Apple to know that just because i use a gmail address as my default calendar, should not cause all those problems. There has to be a serious bug in the iOS if entering events results in unwanted GMT info, 30 minute alerts despite Calendar settings and event settings saying 'none' for alerts, and the failure of any events entered on my iPhone to sync with iCal and iCloud.

When i called Apple about these problems several weeks ago, before i figured out that i could solve them by using an iCloud calendar as my default calendar, the rep (first tier and inexperienced, frequently put me on hold to consult with supervisors) said that i should do a factory reset on my iPhone. i was like, no, i don't think so, i don't want to go to all that hassle for something i know is a problem with the iOS.

I would like to find out why using an iCloud as a default calendar doesn't solve this problem for others. Is it because of a necessity (that i don't have) of using a non-iCloud calendar as default?

Dec 30, 2014 4:52 AM in response to JG in SB

JG, so this AM I have a few events on my iPhone that have added CST in parenthesis. I also have an added issue of when I add an event on my iCal, it just shows up as NEW EVENT on my phone, but the name of the event does not. I may just ONLY work on my iPhone and avoid the Calendar program as this seems to be my problem. If my Exchange OWA were more user friendly, I'd definitely use that, but it is not a good calendar to work with.

Dec 30, 2014 9:24 AM in response to James Barber

I have this problem too and it seems to also have begun around the time of the update to iOS 8. However, I googled the issue and found many, many listings in various forums describing the same problem with dates going back as far as 2009. I stopped in at the Apple store and asked one of the floor techs about it. She told me I was the second person that day to ask about it, but she didn't know the answer and referred me to the Genius Bar. When I have the time I'll make an appointment and do that, and if they can fix it I'll post it here.

Dec 30, 2014 9:44 AM in response to spavio

Unless the Geniuses at your local Apple Store have the ability to go in and modify the iOS source code, they are not going to be able to "solve" this for you. What will most likely happen is that they will assure you this can only be caused by the server that hosts your calendar account....which is total BS and has been thoroughly confirmed to be BS.

A much more effective use of your time that may actually generate a result is to report this bug to Apple using the feedback link.....provided multiple times above in this thread. If you read through the thread even a little bit you will find the link.....and also posts that explain why the Genius Bar folks can't do anything about this for you.

I'm just trying to save you time and frustration here.

Dec 30, 2014 11:15 AM in response to spavio

If one floor rep at the Apple store had two customers ask about the issue in one day, seems likely there will have been a lot of customers who asked in one day for all the floor reps combined, those stores have a lot of floor reps plus add to that the times per day the 'geniuses' who were asked about it. That would be a lot of inquiries per week. And different people on this thread have different manifestations of the problem, which is consistent with a code mess in combination with different set ups.
