iPhone 6 with Health App / Cycling tracking broken?

Hi guys -

Wondering if you guys have tried cycling with an iPhone 6?

I was hoping that the M8 chip would be able to track my cycles? - While it works with steps-taken and distance covered, it doesn't seem to recognise I've been riding my bike.

Here's how it looks on my ip6 after my cycle today...

Is it broken? Is my phone broken?

Let me know if you guys have had this issue also.

Cheers!

I'm betting that this data comes from third party apps (tho I don't know for sure since my Health App is tracking my steps)

With 8.0.2 just being released last night, we're now waiting on Apple to approve (and for developers to update) the updated apps that will integrate with Healthkit

I just got an update for MyFitnessPal which now has settings to share with HealthKit and it is showing as a 'data source' in Health App - my first "source"! 🙂

Well, thanks -- tho I'm not sure the statement "The Health App by itself does't track anything" is 100% correct unless there's something going on under the hood I don't know about.

I only have one app that connects to Health App via HealthKit... and it isn't tracking steps. BUT, even before I had that update, the Health App was tracking my steps - and it shows data for those steps. And, if you look in the details of the "step" data, it shows the source as my phone name.

So at least some data is coming from the iPhone 6 itself.

My recollection from the keynote was that the Apple watch was going to collect cycling Data but I could be wrong.

Just spoke with Apple Support and let them know still no cycling being recorded even after the update to iOS 8.02 early this morning. And, on top of that, my barometer is not working either. Sigh. Hopefully the software guys will come out with iOS 8.03 soon with more bug fixes. Anyone else having issues with Health App?? (The rep said they know cycling is not working since iOS 8 came out and they are still working on it).

Interestingly I discovered that the "floor" counter (flights climbed) thought I was climbing many many more flights than I do even in my 3 story house. However, looking at the raw data I determined that the flights climbed was actually my daily bike ride. Every minute or so the flights climbed would register another flight climbed. In total the flights climbed corresponded roughly to the altitude gain on this bike ride e.g. at around 10 feet per floor and 127 floor (flights) climbed the Dashboard was reporting an elevation on my bike of 1270 feet which is roughly accurate.

So nothing appears in the cycling distance section but the bike ride is showing up as flights climbed. Of course, if you ride on flat ground you'll see no credit in either spot I suppose!

Good evening folks,

I am a daily commuter on my bicycle as well. I average roughly 15 miles per day on my bike. I was looking forward to this app tracking all of my riding and incorporating it into my daily health statistics. When I looked to see my results and noticed it was broke I was very disappointed. Apple please put out a fix for this ASAP. I am currently running iOS 8.0.2

Thanks,

Mike

I just talked to Swedish Apple support who in turn contacted an Apple engineer because support couldn't answer my question. Anyway the answer I got when I asked why the m8 chip didn't track my cycling was that the m8 chip is never going to work on it's own to track cycling, like it does with walking, steps and elevation. The m8 chip needs help from third party apps to track cycling, according to the engineer. I hope they are wrong and that Apple is still working on a way to make this work but it doesn't look good at the moment.

yeah that's been my realization as well as the dashboard does show the cycling data from my Strava app since the healthapp linking was enabled and the Strava app was updated. My thought is that cycling is a bridge to far to infer as an event as my bus ride to work on inclement weather days could easily be construed as a bike ride by the M8 unless you tell it you are starting/ending a bike ride like you do with running and biking apps. Guessing the watch will have some functionality to indicate starting or ending a bike ride. The only odd man out is Im pretty sure I recall and people have mentioned that Tim Cook stated in one of the presentations ( watch? Iphone 6?) that the healthapp/M8 could detect or pick up a bike ride (too busy w/ work and stuff to google the specifics).

Any who lets see what the watch brings, for now external battery to power Strava and GPS on longer bike rides
