Why can't I download or update apps on iPad running iOS 8

Updated my iPad Air to iOS 8. Apps requiring updates and any new app downloads I tried on my iPad Air have been sitting in wait status for hours. I did the following to try to correct the problem but with no success...

- Turned off and restarted the ipad

- reset the iPad without losing previous data

- signed out of iTunes account and signed back in.

My cellular and wifi router are working fine. My iPhone 5 update and iPad mini updates to ios8 worked fine and new apps and any updates are downloading without any problems. I have auto download turned in for apps so when I initiate an app download on my iPad Air, it downloads fine onto my iPad mini even though it is "hung up" on my iPad Air.

Is there anything else I should try before taking the radical step of wiping clean my iPad Air?

Thanks for your solution. It worked for me.

I've tried everything suggested on this thread.

I do not have WSJ or anything in my Newstand.

I do not have any podcast subscription.

I do not use ApplePay.

Hard reset, signing in and out, turning off automatic updates, everything, you name it, I've tried it. But nothing worked.

But simply turning off the Passcode lock solved the problem!

Thanks.

New apps bought on my mac or iPhone were stuck in "waiting" mode on my iPad. After deleting the Wired magazine app in my Newsstand, logging out my account in iTunes settings, restarting, and logging back in, everything works again. I don't know which of those steps was most important, but just letting people know what worked for me.

I have tried all the solutions (i do not have wsj installed, nor any other magazines in newsstand) except hard resetting my iPad mini through a different computer so that it (allegedly) does not automatically load my previous profile.

In regard to the update problem, I have noticed that in the App Store, it always says the same in the search field - "mail" which i searched for a few months back when i installed the MailBox app. I have tried removing the MailBox App to check if that was what caused the problem, but no luck. So i am guessing that it is App Store which is hanging somewhere and cannot move on. But i (obviously) cannot reinstall App Store.. I am shopping from the danish app store.

I can neither install new apps nor update my existing apps without connecting to my computer.

All suggestions are welcome!

None of the fixes I tried seemed to stick. It takes a lot more work to turn things on and off and restart the ipad, etc, than just do the updates in iTunes and then connect to the host computer.

FWIW, the other day, the iPad told me I had 12 updates waiting. This was about a week after I did those updates, and the app store icon had a '3' in a red circle by then, so I assume there were really just 3 updates waiting. Settings also wants me to update to 8.1.2. I have heard it does not fix this issue, and may cause more, so no thanks.

This issue must really have them flummoxed, for it to still be unresolved and unacknowledged after so many months.

I've been struggling with this same issue on my new iPad Air 2.

I would like to pass on what has been successful for me, both on my iPad Air and my iPhone 5s.

1. Clear all APPS that are currently running (in memory).

2. Go to Settings/iTunes and App Store and Login using your APPLEID and Pswd.

3. Once successfully logged into the APPS store, REBOOT you device by simultaneously holding the POWER and HOME buttons down until the Apple

appears on the screen.

4. Start up your Apps Store and the Apps count needing updating will show in the lower right hand corner. Select the update button and then the purchased

Items.

5. You should now be able to download each individual app showing UPDATE!

I BELIEVE THIS IS AN APP STORE BUG THAT WAS INTRODUCED WHEN THEY WENT TO TWO PART AUTHENTICATION!

Hope this works for you.

My ipad mini had the same problem, could not update apps and could not download apps. Here is what I did to fix it. I went to settings, selected General, went to the bottom, selected Reset, then I reset the network settings. Once the reset was done, I had to sign back into icloud, sign back into the app store, then everything worked. Now I can download apps and the app updates work fine. Hope this helps.

My issue turned out to be related to my specific network. When i was connected to my own wifi (which i almost always am when trying to update apps) i could not download nor update APPs. But when connected to other networks it worked fine.

The issue was resolved when i updated to the newest iOS the other day, so i didn't get a chance to test it out further.

Hello, I just recently updated my iphone 5 directly to 8.1.1 from 7.1.1 and have experienced this problem as well. I have also found that the fix you outline has worked for me several times, but unfortunatley it never lasts. Each time a new update comes along I have to repeate these steps to be successful. I do not have the WSJ app. If you have found your workaround to be permanent I would be curious to know this. Thanks

My workaround has been permanent. I just returned from a four week trip and turned on the iPad Air that had previously exhibited the problem. I had 77 app updates to make after that four weeks of being powered off. I clicked "Update All" and it updated all of them in about 30 minutes over WiFi.

I have had no further problems since I fixed it back in October?...I think it was October...a long time ago!

hey this is what i did to resolve my problem. I plugged in my iPhone 6 on iOS 8.1.2 and backed it up to the computer and then restored from that back up from my computer. And the app store was working fine. My issue was i could not download or update any apps the wheel would keep spinning with no app icon on the spring board what so ever and the updates section stated all apps are up to date without the recent updates. This just happened on its own. Just back it up to the computer and restore it from that back up no need to restore the entire phone hopefully this helps you guys because resetting network settings or signing out of the itunes store and back in didn't do anything

In the case for me, the icon wold just jump back to UPDATE after i tapped it, as if i never tapped it. And i couldn't even purchase or download any new App.

  1. I logged out of iTunes.
  2. Logged in with another account (i have two accounts).
  3. Things worked from there.
  4. Logged out of that account and back into my primary account.

However, before doing this, i also disabled Automatic Updates. Don't know if that affected it.
