After the update to iOS8, all video and movies thumbnails, were replaced by the gray icons in the picture attached. I am using itunes 11.4 and the thumbnails appear in the library list. There was no problems with the iOS7.

I have the same problem on my iPod touch 5th gen.
I removed all the videos from my media library, added them back in and re-synced the iPod to no avail.
I synced the same vids to my iPhone 4 (iOS7) and all the thumbnails are all present, so iTunes doesn't seem to be at fault.
Same problems on ipad air.
Just solved it myself !
Go the library list, rightclick on the files, select "get info" and delete the artwork ! At least you get the first frame of the movie as a thumbnail ...
I tried loading bmp, gif or jpg files but with nothing.
Apple has changed or tightened up the requirements for media artwork.
Until someone figures out what dimensions makes itunes happy, live with it or as you said remove the artwork.

Why should I have to go and manually change the size of all the artworks now ? !!!! I have some of these videos since iOS4 .... 600x600 was fine so far. Why on earth did someone decided all of a sudden, that this was not good?
I see it in the same way, too! Without announcement to change this thing really shows me that the focus is only on iTunes! I don't like to be pushed....

Same issue on my iPad2. Why did they do this? Surely the latest and greatest IOS should be capable of displaying the artwork. I have about forty old videos and am not about to redo the artwork for them. The only option is to view the video list in DETAIL mode so you at least see the names.
Updated to iOS 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 and the problem still persists...
After both updates I re-tried both suggested picture sizes in this thread on my iPod 5th gen and it didn't work.
On top of having no thumbnails I discovered that when watching TV Show episodes it auto loads the next episode automatically.
Sounds pretty sweet right, it sort of is until you fall asleep and wake up to a dead battery.
If any one knows how to turn off that option please let me know.
changing the cover pic to tiny thumbnails can't be the solution because then it would be too small to work on Apple TV and in the iTunes browser. If this isn't a bug it's a totally ridiculous change that Apple has made.
i have the same problem with all my home movies. over half of the thumbnails were replace by grey icons. i just want the first frame of the video to show so that i can tell them apart. i am using an iPhone 6. apple, please fix!
