Unable to use Garmin Heart Rate Monitor (ANT+) with iOS 8.

I have a new iPhone 6. On my previous iPhone 5 with iOS 7 I used Digifit to track my exercise and monitor my heart rate with a Garmin Heart Rate monitor and never had any problem with it. I use an ANT+ 30-pin transceiver attached with Apple's 30-pin to lightning connector to connect to the Garmin Heart Rate Monitor. Since getting my new iPhone 6, when I try to start an exercise program in Digifit it hangs while trying to connect the the sensors. I handed down my old iPhone 5 to my daughter and tried it with her's, which is now updated to iOS 8, with the same results. Therefore I believe it must be a problem with iOS 8.

Anyone else have similar issues?

I wonder if it is related to the HealthKit bug?

Solutions?

Thanks!

Having the same issue with a MIO Alpha heartrate watch which requires no ANT+ adapter and should just connect via Bluetooth 4.

I would suggest this is likely going to be a problem with Digifit. They likely haven't tested and updated their app prior to the release of iOS8, and for some reason it has caused a conflict. I suggest this as my watch connects to bluetooth on the iPhone 6... it's only in Digifit that it does not. Hopefully you have written to Digifit as again, I believe the fix is reliant on them getting up to speed with iOS8.

Thank you jivemm,

Have you tried your MIO Alpha with any other applications? I tried my setup with RunKeeper with a similar result. While it didn't crash the app neither was it able to connect to the sensor.

I haven't written to Digifit yet as I suspect that iOS 8 is the culprit, but I will do so in the interest of thoroughness.

BTW, how do you like your MIO Alpha?

Hello again. Yes I have used it with Wahoo Fitness & Mio Go. It is possible that your specific issue of the ANT+ adaptor is iOS8 related but for me the issue is definitely Digifit.

MIO Alpha is brilliant. Completely accurate for heart rate monitoring and much more convenient than the old chest straps!!

Just tested Runkeeper and it connects fine. Definitely points towards a prob with iOS8 for you though... Unfortunately.

Hi bk256,

This appears to be a known issue. I wrote to Digifit support and recieved the following answer:

Unfortunately we are having issues with ANT+ pairing on iOS 8. We are still looking in to it, but we may not have a solution.

Ultimately, I would suggest upgrading your sensors to Bluetooth Low Energy. This technology will work great with your iPhone 6 and future devices.

I apologize for the inconvenience, and please let me know anything further I can do to assist you.

In a follow up where I asked about jivemm's issue with the MIO Alpha above, Digifit responded that it should work with the MIO and pointed me to the following URL to troubleshoot issues with Bluetooth:

Thanks. This is depressing. I use both cadence and HRM for all my work outs. Do I invest in yet another HRM or do I simply wait for the Apple watch.

Wahoo's new line of HRM straps use BLE. They also have Cadence/speed sensors that use BLE. You might want to check out DC Rainmaker's blog for reviews.

He does lots of great reviews on running/biking tech.

Best of luck.

Digifit is out of the ANT+ business permanently:

http://blog.digifit.com/2014/09/digifit-discontinues-ant-support-ios-8/

This is very disheartening for all of us in the Garmin world. Even though ANT+ is an older technology, its shorter range often meant less interference in large workout facilities.

As it is, Garmin sends the ANT+ data from heart rate monitors to their fitness devices. The older ones only communicated using ANT+. The newer ones have both ANT+ technology to receive data from HRMs and to communicate to computers as well as being BLE-enabled. Using BLE, the devices can send the received HRM data to the mobile device app, Garmin Connect. I only use iPhones but presume it is similar in the Android world.

If you want to continue using your Garmin HRM, you will need to buy one of their newer devices like a Forerunner, Vivofit or Vivosmart. This will send heart rate data to Garmin Connect and hopefully share it with Apple Health. If you want to avoid another device and only want to use a HRM and mobile phone, you will need to buy one of the HRMs that use BLE, not ANT+.

Fortunately, I own those devices already. I never liked Digifit.

Can you assist please I am now sooooooooo confused with Apple devices and their compatibility with Garmin and Wahoo Fitness.

I have a new Iphone 6 and about to buy new Ipad Air 2 and Mac Book Pro. I have a year old Garmin 910 XT(triathlon) with HR monitor, ANT+.. I want to pair Garmin with new apple devices and I use Training peaks. I also am about to purchase Wahoo KICKR bike trainer http://store.apple.com/uk/product/HC262ZM/A/wahoo-fitness-kickr-bike-trainer

and use it with Trainer road software.

http://uk.wahoofitness.com/devices/wahoo-key.html

that I have been advised to buy I think is for old apple devices ?? Will this fit iphone 6 and IPad air 2 ?

As I've never seen an ANT adapter for a lightning connector, I can't imagine why "apple" would give you that advice. Sounds as if the person you were talking to might not be an athlete? I've heard that people have managed to kind of make the old Wahoo key work with the adapter that Apple sells for using older 30-pin accessories with the newer phones with lightning connectors. It sounds like a mess and a disaster waiting to happen to me. I'm also not sure why you should not use BT. I've found it works fine.

You might want to take a look at Wahoo's RFLKT+:

It's not the total answer to your issue but it might help.

Also, see the link I posted above to DC Rainmaker's site. You'll find lots of great information on training gadgets there.

Best of luck.

Anyone get a fix for this. I just bought the premium garmin hr and it is detected by my 510. But I would also like to use it with iPhone for running and the spin bike but it is not detected on iPhone 6+

There is no "fix:. I've already posted some suggestions for work arounds. Did you read them? Did you check out the blog I suggested? The higher end Garmin watches will sync, after a fashion, with the Garmin Connect app. However, they won't show real time stats, but, since you have the watch for that, it doesn't seem like it should be a big problem.

I don't know what a "510" is so I can't comment on that.
