iOS 8 download failing repeatedly

Downloading of iOS 8 to my iPad has failed at least six times, now possibly more. Is this because so many are trying to download at the moment (September 21)? Or is there something I need to do on my end. I have screen lock set to "never," though it was my impression that screen lock should not interfere with OS downloads.

I had no problem with my iPhone 5c either. I think it took less than hour. Maybe as little as half an hour.

If the phone updated without issue, it's hard to imagine that there is anything that you could be doing wrong that's causing this problem. Obviously your iTunes was able to communicate with the Apple servers in order to download the update for the phone, so I can't believe that is your router, Internet connection, your computer or your version of iTunes is causing the problem. Of course this would be too easy, but you don't haplen to have another computer that you could try or what I would recommend trying even before that is to update using another WiFi network.

I Updated my iPad at my office connecting to an ad hoc network that I create every day with the wired Ethernet connection to my iMac. I had no problems downloading the update at all. And I updated (like I always do) virtually the minute the update appeared in the Software Update settings on my iPad So the traffic on the servers couldn't have been heavier than it was at that time.

I went to bed with iOS 8 downloading in iTunes and the laptop plugged into a power supply. This morning i find that the download has again failed, this time with an error message: "an unknown error: 9006." I'm wondering if that was the laptop going to sleep. Would that disrupt the download?

As the other poster here said, I give up. I will make one more attempt without iTunes and one more with iTunes if the first fails. If that fails to I will just go with iOS 7 till Apple figures out what's going on. I understand there are many of us having this problem.

I hate to think what updating my laptop to Yosemite is going to be like.

I think that I would not let the computer go to sleep when trying to update. However, I don't know that's why this isn't working for you.

This is is from the iTunes specific error codes troubleshooting website.

Check your security software

Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.

Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.

I checked out the link you provided. It is about problems between security software and iTunes. I am not running any security software. Downloading fails on the iPad as well as with iTunes.

I give up. I'm gonna let this alone for a while. Perhaps someone will figure out what the problem is. Perhaps the problem will resolve itself. Whatever, I'll get along with iOS 7 till this problem is solved.

My sister-in-law in NY had the same exact problem: estimates of up to 55 hours to donwload iOS 8 using iTunes. I went through all the steps discussed here with her and no luck. She awoke at 3 am today and on a whim tried again. It took only about 30 mintues.

Between that and my success here on Cape Cod updating an iPad and iPhone in about an hour, I have to believe you (and many others) are seeing server overload and Internet congestion.

Eric,

I too am puzzled by these congestion issues so long after release day, but the anecdotal evidence is piling up.

I think I read that Apple is using its new server farms and new load-balancing methods -- not akamai -- to distribute iOS 8, and perhaps there are some bugs left to iron out.

Success at last. About an hour ago I said to myself, "Let's see how downloading is going now." I turned off auto-lock and started the download OTA on my iPad. About an hour later I looked over and saw a little white message box displayed on the screen. I thought, "Oh well, still not working." But on closer inspection I saw that the download had completed and iOS 8 was reading for installation. Installation is underway as I write.

From 45 hours per download to 1 hour in just a couple days. Thank you, Apple.

And thanks to all who confirmed that I was not the problem.
