USB Music not playing in car after IOS8

After update to iOS 8 my iPhone 5s I am unable to play any online music or audio files via USB in my car. Before upgrade I was able to listen to any audio which I play online using Safari. Even if I play a YouTube video still I could hear the audio on car speakers if my USB is connected. But not anymore after the IOS upgrade.

note: there is no music stored on my phone, even i have deleted the U2 album as well.

will be thankful if someone can share his experience or solution to get my online music listening in car using USB.

I have the same issue, though I have found a work around that so far works for me. While my 2010 GMC Yukon won't start/stop the music by itself (even turning off the radio doesn't pause it, neither does the pause button), if I manually start/stop the music from the iPhone itself, it works. The only thing I have to be certain to remember is to pause or stop the music from the phone, otherwise it keeps playing when the phone is disconnected from the USB (or during calls, etc).

I am raising the white flag. I have tried every suggestion on this thread and a couple of others. I have searched the web. I have called AppleCare (they blame my car system). I have called my car company (they blame Apple). I obviously have some odd combination of iOS 8/iPhone 6/specific car audio system problem. I will be living with using only Bluetooth (which also was recently messed up but has been fixed) on my car. Life goes on.

this is not an iPhone 6 issue, this is an iOS 8 issue, as I can verify that this happens on an iPhone 5 with iOS8, and iPhone 5s with iOS8. Don't listen to APPLE CARE or your care manufacture, because they are both reading from a script to have you figure out the issue, and when you complete doing everything they suggest, they blame the other party. I have found a lot of threads about this issue and at this time I would guess is that APPLE knows about this issue and is working on fixing it for the next iOS release, which will be released between now and Next year some time.

I use to believe that APPLE lived by their motto "It just works", doesn't seem to be living up to it.

The problem is iOS8. It is not compatible with many in-car media systems.

Last week I bought an iPhone 6. It will not connect to the media system in my 2011 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420. My wife's iPhone 5S (with iOS 7 and the Apple 30pin to lighting adapter) and my previous iPhone 4S (also with iOS 7) would connect instantly and have full functionality. using a 30pin connection Apple suggested the following fixes for my iPhone 6:

1. Restore iPhone 6 to factory settings. I did this. It did not work.

2. "Update" my wife's iPhone 5S to iOS 8 to test if the problem is with iOS 8 (I resisted this at first because if iOS 8 was in fact the problem, I would have two phones that could not connect to my car - rather than one. Not really a solution).

3. Contact the car manufacturer. I did. They told me it was a problem with Apple.

In the interests of science I "updated" my wife's phone to iOS8. I say updated, but this proved to be a backward step. Following the "update" it refuses to connect to my car and now exhibits the exact same problem as my iPhone 6.

The problem is indeed with iOS8 based on this evidence.

The cynic or conspiracy theorist in me has come to the assumption that this is because Apple have recently created "Car Play" which they are trying to sell to car manufacturers. If you don't have car play, forgot about using your iPhone without serious hassle or difficulty.

I have ordered a ViseeO Tune2Air wma 1000 to see if this might help -- I will try to use it as a bluetooth interface between the phone and the in-car system. I don't hold out much hope and (if it does work) am sure the sound quality will suffer compared to cable connection so at best it is only a temporary fix (if it works).

I will be asking Aston Martin if they will be trying to update the software on the media systems and be able to apply that to my car in the future. I will also submit a suggestion on the Apple feedback page to ask them to fix iOS8. Failing both, I will probably get rid of my iPhone and switch to a less troublesome brand going forward. Unlikely to change the car simply because Apple have made it difficult (I suspect deliberately) for iOS8 to connect to systems that don't have Car Play.

Would be nice if things "just worked" But it doesn't just work really, does it Apple.

Thanks, JR-JR for posting. I am sorry that we both continue to have issues but at least I know that I am not the only one. My Bluetooth is mostly working correctly (songs no longer automatically resume after a call unless I push pause then play again) so that is some consolation, but it is annoying that Apple releases an iOS that is a step BACKWARDS, at least in this respect. I am not very optimistic that it will be fixed in a later update since AppleCare has told me I need a firmware update on my audio system, thus passing the blame.

I am having issued with my car stereo since taking this update. I have tried everything and it still won't work. I am so disappointed because the one thing I enjoy I can't do anymore. The strange thing is that my husband took the same update and his phone works in my car And my phone works in his truck.

It is unfortunate that apple won't step up to the plate and fix this. I have several Apple devices and this will determine my next choice for a new phone.

Hi JR-JR,

Sorry to hear that I am not struggling alone on this one.

I have just upgraded from a 4S into a 6+, which included both lightning and iOS8 and boy was I in for a trouble connecting it to my Audison Bit Ten D processor in the car. I have purchases an 30 pin to lightning 0,2 meter original cable for an outrageous price at retailer. I was of same belief, that it should just work....

I am curious to know that happens when you connect, does it say not recognized?, not support? or is like mine - nothing at all happens. It does not seem like anything is plugged into the phone at all.

I really fear that your assumption towards "Car Play" might be right, but I sure hope that they won't go that unfair on their loyal customers.

Hi Kjerumgaard,

i get one on two responses when I plug in the iPhone 6. Either the words "iPod Unreadable" appear on the car's media screen and that's it, or it connects for a split second the name of my IPhone scrolls across the screen, the system bleeps, disconnects, then connects again only to do the same cycle over and over again. With my wife's 5S, only the second connect:disconnect cycle happens but for a split second you can play part of a tune before it disconnects. The cycle is quicker on the iPhone 6 so it disconnects before you can play anything. With the iPhone 6 the "iPod unreadable" message is what get most of the time.

If I plug the iPhone using the aux 3.7 mm plug I can play music but cannot control the iPhone from the car's system and do not get any track info on the screen so not really an ideal solution. I have bought a viseeo tune2air to try Bluetooth connection but if it works I suspect the sound quality will suffer. It arrived today so will try it tomorrow and let you know. Again, not an ideal solution but might be an ok solution until apple fix the problem which I hope they do quickly.

Hi JR-JR,

Thanks for a very fast reply.

Okay, since you do get at least an error when connecting, there is a chance my cable is faulty. I have read some reviews of the cable afterwards, and there are some different opinions out there...

The error message "iPod unreadable" that is the car giving the message right?
Does your iPhone have any message in the display and does it give a notification sound when you connect or disconnect?

The 3.5 minijack plug is an analog signal, which in my optic, do not provide a decent signal. I have used it before and not even my processor was capable of generating a acceptable result from this source.

I expect that the Bluetooth will indeed work, but you might encounter sporadic drop outs and loss in audio quality.

I myself consider trying to install an airport express in the car, in that way I can achieve the toslink optical signal I need for the processor. I would if possible like to maintain an all digital signal, since there is very limited loss of quality. I am worried though that the airplay stream will result in lags and delays when changing tunes.

How I wish Apple would just make it work......

After upgrading my iPhone to iOS 8, when I connect my iPhone 4S on my car via USB, the radio system tries to recognize it as an iPod as always. But after 10 seconds the system switches to FM showing some iPod error message. The iPhone continues to charge but no connection with the radio system is stablished. For me, the solution was:

Start the Music app, play any music and then connect the cable. It doesn't work with any other music app, I tried some of them including Spotify. If you just start the Music app and don't play any music, when you plug the cable the connection will not establish as well.

As I said, I had this problem with my old iPhone 4S. I live in Brazil and my radio system is provided by Fiat (Punto Sporting 2015).

I tried resetting the iPhone, but none of the suggestions helped to fix the problem. Sorry.

Good Luck!
