USB Music not playing in car after IOS8

After update to iOS 8 my iPhone 5s I am unable to play any online music or audio files via USB in my car. Before upgrade I was able to listen to any audio which I play online using Safari. Even if I play a YouTube video still I could hear the audio on car speakers if my USB is connected. But not anymore after the IOS upgrade.

note: there is no music stored on my phone, even i have deleted the U2 album as well.

will be thankful if someone can share his experience or solution to get my online music listening in car using USB.

i finally have my phone communicating with the car again - fully functional. My iPhone 5 stopped working via usb after the 8.02 update, but still worked with the hands free system (Call, no music). My iPhone 6 finally arrived and was in the same situation. I tried a variety of settings on the phone, but what finally worked was a factory reset on the car audio system (Kia UVO). Had to reprogram channel presets and reconnect phones, but all systems are working 🙂

Just curious, did you report the issue to Apple with your vehicle/head unit info? That's what I did when I sent in the complaint.

All I know is, that iOS8.0 and subsequent updates broke the USB connected control for playback -- BT still worked fine for calls. I tried all of the suggestions I could find, but the bottom line is it was iOS8. I tried multiple iPods and iPhones... any with iOS8 wouldn't work, any prior to 8.0 worked fine. As soon as I updated to 8.1 everything worked fine again.

I am experiencing issues with my iphone 6 after the 8.1 release, my 2013 chevy silverado does recognize the device however does not do automatic playback. Sometimes I experience issues with the lightning cable saying it does not support the device. Thought it might be the cable however I plugged the device into my Sony ICF-CS15iPN radio that has a lightning dock and it does the same thing. Not sure why this is happening now.

My iPhone 5 worked with 'media' in my 2010 VW Golf, all songs recognised, steering wheel buttons worked etc .... The only glitch it used to have was if someone called me, when they hung up the music wouldn't play and I'd have to unplug the phone from the USB and plug it in again.

last week I bought some music on iTunes on my iMac and so then wanted it on my phone to listen to it in the car .... Suddenly nothing, says device not recognised ... But if I select bt option on car then it plays but no track listing and steering wheel buttons dont change play list anymore.

im so tired of Apple but caught up in the Apple loop (imac, iPad, iPhone blah blah blah) that to escape the trap you find yourself in would cost a fortune. As for iCloud, do me a favour ... Drives me nuts !

Get back to basics Apple and stop trying to be so clever ... It's not funny.

OH and if you think I'm going down the iwatch hole ... Forget it ... I'd never be on time !

Hello,

I think i have same problem USB AUDIO first it was with my wife's iphone 5, then with my own 5C and also now with my wife's iphone 6

the problems started with iOS 8 and was NO SOLVED BY :

- iOS 8.1 update

- complete restore of each devices.

- turning on/off the car (key start) or just the audio system. (car is Honda CRZ was working great until iOS 8)

Workaround (NOT SOLUTION)

- turning off iphone

- turning on iphone

- connecting usb

- turning on the car audio

Workaround (NOT SOLUTION)

- using the iphone to play/pause

OTHER PROBLEM : i use TA/TP to listen to "info-Traffic" radio station :

BEFORE iOS8 : the music playing via usb of the iphone was paused while the radio station interrupted,

now when the radio news is over, the audio from the iphone has continued playing and i end up missing some part.

OTHER PROBLEM : i use bluetooth of the car to answer phonecalls :

BEFORE iOS8 : the music playing via usb of the iphone was paused while the phone call interrupted,

now when the phone call is over, the audio from the iphone has continued playing and i end up missing some part.

OTHER PROBLEM : bluetooth does not hook up with my car when i come to my car, instead i have to start the car and say "next phone" and after a quite long search the outcomes varies from "nothing found" to finding other people phones to "ok i finally found your iphone"

the problems started with iOS 8 and was NO SOLVED BY :

- iOS 8.1 update

- resetting netwok settings on the iphone

- "forget device" and re-pair with device

- complete restore of each devices.

- turning on/off the car (key start)

this really suck, I mean REALLY.

Throwing myself in there as someone having the same issue. 2015 Chevrolet Corvette. The car recognizes the phone (iPhone 6, iOS 8.1) over both BT and USB. Receiving / making calls works fine. MyLink allows me to browse songs on the phone and request to play them via voice control but never actually starts playing them. Using Siri Eyes Free causes the song to start playing on the phone but doesn't play over the car speakers. Like others, if I play the song from the phone itself (music app) it will play through the speakers.

I have same issue with car USB and iPhone 5. Extremely irritating, but you can start the music by (up) swiping the control menu and pressing the triangle to play. This way you don't have to restart the device every time you get in the car. Unfortunately for me the USB interface is on the other side of the car and every time you stop the car you have to do the same again. I'm now using a iPhone 3 as strangely it performs better in car than more contemporary products. Does anyone know how to fix this please?

Possible solution:

After purchasing a iPhone 6 plus, I was unable to connect Spotify, Soundcloud, or Google Maps voice direction via my vehicle's USB or bluetooth. When I bought my iPhone 5s I had the same issue, after weeks of struggling I corrected the issue by adding at least one song to my Apple Music library (on the phone).

It seems for devices with no music in the actual Apple Music app, it will impede 3rd party app auto play features.

Solution:

  1. Go to iTunes app (via iPhone) download a song (free at best)
  2. Start/Play song from the Apple Music app
  3. Plug car USB to iPhone or connect bluetooth
  4. Song downloaded should begin to play in vehicle.
  5. Open Spotify or other 3rd party app, press play. App should override current music playing.

Caveat: There has been a handful of times, when the device will not be recognized by my vehicle, a quick restart of the phone or upon turning car on/off cures all.

Note: Since downloading this one song from iTunes, and keeping in my Library, I have *not* have to open the Music app each time. Spotify, and any other 3rd party app syncs right away to my vehicle upon plug in. (Infiniti FX35 2013, and third party [Incipio] 5ft Lightning to USB cable)

Good Luck!

MX1Bx has the correct solution.

My observations (iPhone 6 plus with IOS8) are:

  • The phone has to be playing music via the music app before connecting to the car's audio system. When that happens, all the controls on the steering wheel for skip and rewind will work.
  • If I had played music through Pandora sometime before connecting it to the car's audio system, the car will not find the iPod, and will eventually reboot the phone. If I start Pandora, and start playing music, and then plug the phone to the car's audio system, music will play, and I am able to use the steering wheel controls.
  • It seems like if the last time sound and audio was played on the phone through the music app, it could be a day or more, the phone will connect to the car's audio system with no problem.
  • The problem only seems to happen when some other non-music app was used and is "active", but "paused" or "stopped", the car's audio system cannot start it automatically, and you have to start that app and manually start audio before connecting to the car's audio system.

Hope that helps someone.

Ideally, this issue should be solved by Apple. We had no problems pre-IOS8.

Same issue here but just started on Wednesday. I have a 2012 Buick Enclave, iOS 8.1.1., iPhone 5. The music app somehow enables repeat playlist and puts the music on pause. I have to manually un pause the music which defeats the purpose of having your hands free. audio and steering wheel controls will not work when plugged in. once I manually un-pause the song car controls will work with a lag however unable to go to another playlist. I tried a factory reset which worked immediately after the reset but not any subsequent times. I sent in user feedback to apple as recommended.

I am going to add my name and problem to the growing list of people who are experiencing this same issue. I have a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and pre- ios8 I had no problems connecting my phone to the truck and listening to music and controlling it through the infotainment system. One other issue I am having is that often the artist, song and album name all come up as UNKNOWN ARTIST on the truck display.

It has gotten to the point that I don't even try to listen to music from my phone any more. I listen to satellite radio or CDs (who does that anymore?) instead of dealing with the phone.

Is there an official place to relay this info to Apple for them to look at? I am not going to pay for any technical support to bring this to their attention as it really is their problem to resolve.

Dec 22, 2014 10:05 PM in response to IOS8issues

Yes! So glad it's not just me. 2014 Nissan Rogue, car recognizes iPhone 5 over Bluetooth but when plugged in to play music it will not autoplay, i need to manually turn the music on and off from the phone itself. Same thing after making a call or reading a text. Silly, I know, but SUPER annoying. Any fixes that anyone can recommend other than restarting phone or pressing play before plugging in?!
