What is it plugged in to? I'm assuming you mean a 3 meter Lightning cable, as a 3 meter charger would take up a room. But the important question is what are you using for a power source.
As a separate question, using an Apple iPad charger for an iPhone is not a problem: Using iPad power adapters with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod - Apple Support
Figured it out!! Well someone else figured it out, I should say:

I am now charging with my iPad charger and it's super fast! If you don't have an iPad, there's lots of different things you can buy for somewhat cheap. Definitely worth the $$:

I read that you may use iPad adapters as well! I would love to hear from apple on this tho! I don't want to start using a more powerful adapter and then my sweet huge battery turns to garbage in 6 months????
If your battery seems as though it is taking an exceptionally long time to charge it may just be that your battery is defective. If you bring the device to your closest Apple Store or Certified Apple Service Provider they can run diagnostics to see if the battery is either consuming a charge or is damaged, and since the phone is under a year old Apple would replace your device for free as long as there is no pre-existing accidental damage. It is NOT recommended that you use an iPad charger to charge your iPhone 6 since in the long run you would be sacrificing the longevity of your battery for its speed to charge.
If you need to to charge real quick with your 5W adaptor, just turn the phone to airplane mode and it will charge faster. Only drawback is your text/calls/internet/everything is turned off. But that's why it charges faster. Just in case you want to charge it real quick, that's my only helpful tip.
HY i m using 6+ and i was same problem with my phone then i go to market and buy 2.1A charger and now its working very good 1% charge in 1 min its really cool. Its my advice to all of u guys who have same problem just use heavy charger. Thanks
Mine has been on an Apple purchased 3meter charger for 5 hours and has just made it to 95% I dont remember it always taking this long....its ridiculous....I have to wait for that to finish so I can charge my ipad on the same connector. It goes flat in under 48 hours often under 24hours if I use it. Wish Apple support had replied to this question I dont think using the ipad charger is a good idea if they didnt ship with it there will be a reason.
Yes its a 3 meter lightning cable and I am plugging it into an AC 8 way adapter that is surge protected and plugged into the wall. There are no other items plugged into it but the wall socket directly is unreachable which is why the 8 way is used. Will this make a difference? The USB to AC adapter is the Apple one too. Great to know the other cable would be safe but its way too short for me to use.
I always shut down all apps and close windows inside Safari to optimise my battery life and do this regularly during use and always before putting on charger. I also have mobile data turned off for almost every App excluding banks and google maps. I searched the power cables that come with my devices, my ipad mini comes with the 5W adapter (as per your helpful link above) but I could not see in the tech specs for the iphone 6 plus which adapter Wattage it comes with. I also searched the store and found the cable I bought from Apple which is "Native Union belt XL lightning-to-USB 3M cable" but it also doesnt quote the wattage. But further googling gave me a likelihood that they are both 5W so if I am using the 'original' chargers e.g. 5W what should be my expected charge time from <5% to 100% please?

Shutting down apps does nothing to improve battery life; in fact it increases battery drain. Apps that appear in the Quick Launch screen are not running; they are on standby. When you shut them down they actually run briefly to save transient storage. And when you launch them again they again use energy to start up. So shutting down apps causes increased battery drain. See: http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/should-you-quit-ios-apps-answer/ Shutting them down does not stop them from running, either. Built in apps simply restart, but without appearing, so you don't know when they load. And any app that can receive notifications will restart to process those notifications, and they won't display either.
Closing windows in Safari will save energy only if the page is auto-refresh, which pages can do, but very few do it.

iPhone 6 and 6S come with the 5 watt adapter, although they can benefit from a 10 W or 12 W adapter. But cables don't have wattage, only the USB adapter has a wattage rating. Cables have resistance, however, which is proportional to length. So a longer cable might be responsible for a slower charge.
As a simple test, try charging your phone with the stock 1 meter lightning cable. If it charges faster the 3 meter cable is the problem.
A full charge should take about 2 1/2 hours. You also should not be routinely running the battery down all the way; there is no benefit to doing so. In fact, the best practice is to charge the phone overnight, every night, regardless of the state of charge when you go to bed. It is smart enough not to overcharge; there is no problem leaving it connected after it reaches 100%.
Me too with iphone 6. Is no one else having this problem? For me, after 2 hours brings me maybe 60% higher.
An iPad charger can most definitely be used to charge an iPhone. It's 12W vs the iPhone 5W so it will charge the device faster and it will not harm your phone.
My 6+ was on the 5W charger from midnight to 7:30am and only went from 5% to 28%!?! ***....When using an old 10W iPad charger it goes at lightning speed from about 25% to 63% in an hr
It makes you wonder why Apple didn't ship a 12W charger with the iphone 6 plus to begin with. I'm thinking that was an oversight on their part.
