iPhone 6 Plus and Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader - Missed Opportunity?

Apple definitely missed an opportunity to tighten up the DSLR/GoPro photography/video workflow with the iPhone 6 Plus. Currently the only way to transfer images from a DSLR or GoPro camera is through an extremely slow WiFi/Bluetooth transfer process. This is fine for someone is moving 1 or 2 images. But, for a batch of 50 to 100, this approach is way too time consuming. Android devices are way ahead of Apple in this regard and I'm fighting the urge to break-away from the iPhone once again, for something that is very solvable.

Enabling the the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to work with the new iPhone 6 Plus solves this workflow issue.

Why not enable it?

I too am dismayed at this incompatibility. I've sent a request into the Apple feedback hole, doubt it will do any good seing how few replies are on this thread...

This is exactly the sort of thing that has me considering Android more and more. A $5 cable has my Nexus 7 connecting to both USB drives and SD card readers, and I can use a file browser to manage GBs of files. Yet my beautiful new iPhone with four times the storage? Forget it.

What I find most disturbing is not that Apple are too lazy to add the features, it's that they take action to forbid users from getting the most out of any device running iOS. They had to tweak iOS 8 to neuter iPhone support for their own Lightning SD card reader!

I love Macs, but iOS is the very antithesis of the OS X. While OS X enables me to exploit the full power of my Mac, iOS forbids me from using the full capability of my iPhone. It's like they aren't even made by the same company.

I too would like to see Lightning to SD card adapter working again for the iPhone 6 and 6+. My need is for the opposite workflow from what most people are posting...the camera in the new phones is so nice for video that I would like to be able to capture high fps videos and offload them to a big SD card. My guess here is that there is no conspiracy by Apple to keep us from doing what we want, but simply that something broke with the transition to iOS 8. If so, we do need to nag them to make fixing the problem a high priority.

This is beyond absurd. Granted I did not fully read the product description which makes no mention of the iPhone, but who would in their right mind imagine that it wouldn't be compatible with the iPhone? After all the iPhone 6 Plus especially is basically like a mini-mini iPad that happens to take phone calls and uses a virtually identical operating system to the iPad.

So I have this gorgeous 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus that I had hoped to use as a lightweight photo companion, both as a backup and display device for sharing with small groups, and I can't get the pictures directly off my camera?! What the eff, Apple? I agree with everything above...these artificial limitations are completely absurd. The best you can do in the "Apple way" is "sync" your photos through iTunes. And then if you make a change you get this cryptic warning that all existing photos will be deleted? This is why Windoze and Android users are smug, and they are right to be so...makes me want to run back into that camp, which I fled from after being completely frustrated by Microsoft for 20 years. There are apps like 'Photo Transfer App' that work, but they make me feel like I'm working at the speed of a SmartMedia card on a serial port from 15 years ago...30 minutes to transfer a small number of photos that would take about 5 seconds in a direct connection. All but useless for me.

BUT...I have finally found a workable solution. The app called 'File Browser' actually gives you file system access to your computers. It, too, is wireless, but REALLY FAST, and something I can live with. I can see the folders of my desktop and laptop computers and pull the images from there. Fat lot of good it does me in the field, but at least I'm one step closer to getting photos easily on to the iPhone. And, yes, I have submitted my comments to Apple.

I Was also hoping that Apple was going to lift this restriction on iPhones for this particular piece of hardware. They have not. I know a great many photographers in the field that would like to be able to use their iPhone 6 plus while out in the field to transfer photos to either upload to their respective host or even simply to share without having to go through their iPads. This means just one more piece of hardware that we have to travel with just to be able to see comps in the field. With all of the other options that Apple has opened up for the 6+ I would have imagined this would have been one. If you can see your mail in a dual pane on the 6+, why not add an even more useful feature for this crossover device?

I've now bought a Toshiba FlashAir SD card will report back when I have my 6+ delivered which is now meant to be next week (got an expected delivery date for it today). In theory I could try it on my 4s but thats not ios 8 on it so dont see the point since it might work on 7 but not 8.

The Sandisk looks like a neat little device for dumping your SD card from a camera onto as backup, but I was hoping to use my 6+ for that.

If the Flashair doesn't work out I might get one of those instead, its about same price as I saved not buying a 128GB 6+ so I'd come out even.

All this jumping through hoops because Apple wont implement a feature they have on practically the same OS, eg the iPad version of iOS, is crazy and irritating.

I am a photographer and I use my iPad mini a lot with the sd card reader to view my photos out in the field and I love it. I was so disappointed as the rest of you are that the card reader does not work with my brand new iPhone 6.

I am so frustrated when Apple does this- making cords and plugs redundant with a new model or update to force everyone to buy another accessory or plug to replace the old one.

I was going to update my iPad mini to the 128GB model but I am holding off until this is fixed. I refuse to spend $900 only to have to spend another $40 on an sd card reader.

Good work Apple, you have lost a $900 sale for the sake of a $40 accessory. I have submitted feedback to Apple on this matter also.

That means the mods made a change to the thread. The fact is that adding additional posts here is not really helping your cause. If someone does not like this, they need to go to the Feedback page. Posting here will not get Apple's attention, just other users like yourself. Feedback is where they get attention and they read those. They do not participate in the forum.

That's an artifact of the way the Jive software that runs the forum works. When the Hosts remove a post (generally for a violation of the Terms of Use), they first move it to another thread then delete it. You can't access those posts once the hosts have removed them.
