iPhone 6 Plus and Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader - Missed Opportunity?

Apple definitely missed an opportunity to tighten up the DSLR/GoPro photography/video workflow with the iPhone 6 Plus. Currently the only way to transfer images from a DSLR or GoPro camera is through an extremely slow WiFi/Bluetooth transfer process. This is fine for someone is moving 1 or 2 images. But, for a batch of 50 to 100, this approach is way too time consuming. Android devices are way ahead of Apple in this regard and I'm fighting the urge to break-away from the iPhone once again, for something that is very solvable.

Enabling the the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to work with the new iPhone 6 Plus solves this workflow issue.

Why not enable it?

I have a cheap third party one like that from a vendor on Amazon. Used to use it with my iPad for a year and worked fine until recently. Didn't work at all with the iPhone 6+, which is when I finally broke down and figured I'd better pay the premium on the Apple product. And that's when I learned that Apple doesn't support their own Lightning card reader on the iPhone!

Bottom line is give it a try if you feel like it, but I seriously doubt that it will work, unfortunately.

But if it does, many of us will rejoice!

I bought this device, it's kinda neat. Works decent..

When I first got it, I could see the images, but not download them. They recently updated the app to allow downloads now. I haven't tested but I will report back. Add me to the light that is bewildered why the SD Card Reader from Apple doesn't work on the iPhone. It's beyond stupid that it's not allowed. In an old iOS beta, it was enabled and it did work, but they removed the feature for some dumb reason.

I do have an iPad I use in the field and it's too many steps and wanted something easier.

I also have a Wireless Adapter for my Camera now from Nikon that imports the photos to my iPhone. So far, it's been the fastest solution I can find.

I looked at several portable wifi-enabled hard drive devices today at Best Buy. I almost bought one, SanDisk at about $100. But, I backed out because adding an additional device or thing, that needs to be charged, is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

I did conduct a test tonight with my GoPro Hero 3 and its wifi capability.

First, I made sure the GoPro's firmware was updated to the most current version.

The first test was to transfer 999 images from my GoPro using wifi to my iPad (~ 6" apart). I was able to transfer 88 JPG files 4.7 mb each, in 20 minutes, before the wifi connection failed and process just hung there. #Fail

The second test was to use the lightning adapter and to transfer the exact same images taken with the GoPro (4.7mb JPG files). I let the import process run for 20 minutes and stopped it. It transferred 2,329 images in 20 minutes. No comparison!

Granted, some of these devices may better wifi capabilities than the Hero 3, but I highly doubt the newer devices compare to the transfer rate of the Lightning to SD Card Adapter. Plus, after reading the reviews of all the new wifi hard drive storage devices, there's always several reviews complaining of transfer rates and the reliability of the wifi connection when transferring many files.

So far, I'm only seeing the Lightning to SD Card Adapter, for use with the iPhone 6, as the only practical solution at this time.

I bought an iphone6 128gb model from Australia last Oct and plan to use them as a sd-card's back up tools when I am travel with my camera. However, later I found out that the camera connection kit from apple itself is not support iPhone, what a shame.

I have search many possible way as I already bought the expensive model, so far only wifi-card can do the job.

Until recently I have tried again buying one of this from ebay, as I heard that the i-flash drive app is working the same way that you can transfer files between iPhone and i-flash drive devices.

So, I gave it a try and bought one of this last week, just got it yesterday from ebay.

it works ok for me and now I do not need an expensive wifi-card in all of my camera. Also it save my cam's battery life.

I think this also works

but it is only support micro-sd card so I didn't try.

you also need an app called i-flashed drive from app store, it is free.

I have nothing to do with the seller. I just wanna share my discovery that's all. In case anyone already know about this items please ignore this comments.

I think the device doesn't work with sdxc card, as I tried today with the micro Sd card I use from my surface3 it shown nothing. But it works just fine with my other sd card. Most of my sd card that use with camers are 32gb, just to avoid loosing photos in case the care fault or broken.

Also, I check from the app builder who make this app and sell the device called I-flash drive, they do not have the device I bought. Only available with the model that act like a external storage drive. So I guess, the factory who make devise might see the opportunity to extend thror product so they make one and sell them themselves. Just my guess thought.

Anyway, I am happy that it works anyway.

At the moment, my best work around is to transfer all the photo to my iPhone(by selecting all) then I do the selecting, delete from Iphone later. As the app only allow me to transfer one photo at a time in preview mode. You guys will see when you get one. May be we can find a better solution. That's what I found for now.

Thank you so much jiji001 for posting that item

It worked great and is just like the adapter made by apple for the Ipad. It is simple to use fast and was exactly what I was looking for. I do a lot with photos and field cameras and this will be an asset to what I do. Again I can not thank you enough.

Almost 20,000 views, 53 took the time to directly say they have the same issue, and lots of comments on here, to include us sending direct feedback emails to Apple and not much in the way of a seamless resolution. Dumping $150 on a complimentary, 3rd party device is suspect.

I wonder how Apple will handling the transfer of digital assets from their competing GoPro device to the iPhone? Slow WiFi too?

I'll add my 2 cents to this, but not sure that it will make a difference to the Ivory Tower.

Apple, you blew it. This may seem minor but as a professional photographer who shares images on social, it would be a huge help for me to simply transfer the images I want to share. For me the timing does matter. Waiting until later doesn't work and I can't always have my ipad with me. It makes absolutely zero sense that you disable the device for the iphone.

Please support this device in a futre update, like the next one!!!
