iPhone 6 Plus and Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader - Missed Opportunity?

Apple definitely missed an opportunity to tighten up the DSLR/GoPro photography/video workflow with the iPhone 6 Plus. Currently the only way to transfer images from a DSLR or GoPro camera is through an extremely slow WiFi/Bluetooth transfer process. This is fine for someone is moving 1 or 2 images. But, for a batch of 50 to 100, this approach is way too time consuming. Android devices are way ahead of Apple in this regard and I'm fighting the urge to break-away from the iPhone once again, for something that is very solvable.

Enabling the the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to work with the new iPhone 6 Plus solves this workflow issue.

Why not enable it?

A good reminder from rGiskard is to make sure we're all sending Apple as much feedback as possible about this artificial restriction.

And, this thread continues to get a lot of traffic. There are a lot more people that need to weigh in on here; either confirm on the original thread that you too have the same question or add a reply on here.

Thank you!

Thanks ChrisJ for reminding everyone that Apple's iOS team don't read the forums. Since we're onto a new comments page, I'd like to add another link to leave Apple feedback.

To all the lurkers: no need to register and post here. If you want the iPhone 6+ to work with Apple's own Lightning SD Card Reader just go to Apple's feedback page and say so.

If we make enough noise Apple are likely to respond to this feature request. Since iOS already supports SD Card Readers, Apple only needs to toggle a setting to enable the feature for iPhones. In fact if iOS had a terminal app, then a simple defaults write would likely enable support. Most importantly (in Apple's view), this feature will sell tens or hundreds of thousands more of their overpriced SD Card Readers. How many features can directly result in millions of dollars* in additional sales?

*If Apple sell an extra 33,333 of their Lightning SD Card Reader Adapters, that's $1,000,000. No subterranean drills required.

Thanks Tumbleweed, that will at least help people in certain situations.

My own needs involve reading SD cards of battery-powered nature cams in the field. A WiFi SD Card reader would work, but it's unnecessarily complex and expensive along with being another battery to maintain and another thing to carry with me.

This thread is stuck at less than 5000 views so it's doubtful enough have left feedback to get Apple's attention.

Perhaps in addition to leaving Apple feedback, we can all send Tim Cook email. Steve Jobs sometimes responded to emails so it's worth a try.

Over 5,700 views and 31 other users have stepped out from the closet to acknowledge having the same workflow question, yet still no practical solution for the mass import of digital assets from companion devices. I appreciate everybody's discussion and desire to find work-around solutions as we continue to send in our feedback to Apple to remove the restriction.

Please remember to send in your weekly feedback to Apple at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

All the best and enjoy the weekend

Amazon does offer free returns.

They send me a free return carton to send back a wifi extender. I got my money back as soon as I dropped it off at a UPS forwarder.

And finally, yes we can vent our frustration here in this forum

No, not really.

Solutions:
1) Use the i-FlashDrive. You use an app to access what is attached to the adapter.

2) Wifi version of a memory card.

Big News !! - Looks like 9.2 fixes this issue.

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/12/08/ios-9-2-tidbits-and-new-features/

USB Camera Adapter - With iOS 9.2, iPhones are now able to support Apple's USB Camera Adapter and related accessories for importing pictures from a digital camera or DSLR. Previously, only iPads supported the USB Camera Adapter. The iPhone 5 and later appear to work with the USB Camera Adapter/iPad Camera Connection Kit. The iPhone 4s and the iPod touch do not support it.

I'll do that too. I'm sure the Apple iPhone product trolls look at the posts here. But, thanks for the tip, my feedback has been sent to Apple.

But, I am curious to know how many other iPhone users are impacted by Apple's reluctance to allow this capability (Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader support). Or, am I the only one on the Planet that has this sort of workflow need and would like to see this capability?

I was gonna buy the 128GB iPhone 6+ until I read this. Now, nope. I may still have to get an iPhone because of the tons of apps I'm already invested in, but since the 6+ will be useless for photos, it'll be the midrange regular 6. Maybe.

Meanwhile, I'd love to get an Android device in about the same size as the 6+, storage and screen-wise, but don't need the cell capability. At 128GB it would make a great photo vault and something I could do some metadata entry on. Any suggestions?
