IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

PD

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

Thanks.

Believe it or not I actually read through all of this! I won't go into how stellar Star Traveler is at copy and paste, but I wanted to post something uplifting for others who happen to hit this thread. There are many recommendations in this thread, which I've tried on my iPad2, with little results until I actually did the Restore option in iTunes. That actually worked! It's not quite as good as before the update, but very much better than anything else, so much that I am actually turning off the Reduce Motion feature. Perhaps the other items I did contributed, I don't know. But I recommend the iTunes Restore as a starting place. Be sure to do the backup option first!

I have the same problem. The iOS 8.0 upgrade is awful. My iPad is slower and I am unable to update/ upload spreadsheets in Quickoffice. Now I have to have two programs to do the work normally done with one. Google Sheets & Docs is not an improvement over Quickoffice. Apple needs to allow a restore to iOS 7.

What did they tell you when you took the iPad to the Apple Store?

SSpent another two hours working on our personal iPads today. Every single workarouns mentioned here has been tried.

we are on vacation but have still managed multiple trips to verizon stores and the Apple Store. Over an hour today and still crashes on ipad 2 and iPad mini.

i Disagree with star traveller that fixes are possible for everyone. Maybe some People, but apparently not a single one of our devices.

yes, we have managed to improve the performance by 200 percent, but even after deleting everything, permanently losing photos in the process and disabling every processor hogging function from motion to background updates to notifications, to typing predictions, we are still at 25% of the iOS 7 performance.

im out of ideas,,, I have faithfully tried everything for my devices and those of my family, business, friends and clients.

maybe star traveller can personally help me?

Well, the logic is simple and solid. You have the same iPad as another user here. You use the same iOS as that other user. He gets it to work ... therefore that means it will work with yours.

That's as solid and true as it ever gets ... unless ... you think your iPad has grown a "personality" and is now a unique device, unlike any other ... :-) ...

I Think the level of functionality or maybe what you define "working" as could be the difference. The genius was stumped and agreed that these iPads are misbehaving. We are not talking about one here. I have several. We have been working with a fleet of them.

BUt, give me more ideas of how to make mine work perfectly like the people you say have managed it. I'm obvious too stupid.

I dialed up Apple's chat line support yesterday out of total frustration. I told them I was not prepared to pay for one time support, nor did I have a support contract. They agreed to help.

They sent me a debug app which ran on my iPad2 and went straight back to Apple in seconds. They told me that there was one game - Boom Beach - that was eating up all of my memory and was not yet iOS8 compliant. They also confirmed that there were a number of other popular apps with same issue.

I was told to de-install Boom Beach, back up my iPad, do a clean install (factory default settings), and then re-install the back up.

It worked! It also solved a long outstanding cellular network intermittent problem, as well.

The iPad is as good as pre-iOS8.

I even noted a dramatic difference just by trashing Boom Beach app and before doing the clean install.

I have using my iPad2 all day without any issues.

I strongly suggest other users with issues try this approach. It make sense that some apps may not be compatible with iOS8 and cause system to be very slow, freeze, crash etc. Despite being extremely angry and frustrated at one point I really don't think this is Apple's fault. With over 1.25m apps and 70 billion downloads, it is inevitable that some of those apps will not be fully compliant with the latest iOS and will need to be updated.

Hope this helps folks!

excellent info. So much better than the totally unhelpful repeating guy... Unfortunately, in my case, I have zero apps installed, total fresh wipe of the systems and I still have crashes, jerkiness, no copy and paste, etc. I keep trying everything suggested. Hope your suggestion helps with other people's issues.

I have the same issue.

Glitchy!! I scroll on the notes and it freezes. It mixes up my titles when I change from one note to the other. For the price of these devices, I should not have to return to factory settings and reload my information, because of the interference of the update. My time is valuable. I purchased my iPad in December of 2012. My iPad is where I write stories, and it worked fine before the new update. I should not have to buy a new iPad, because the Apple update is too advanced for an older model iPad. I don't want to have to reset everything or revert back to the last version, but that looks like my only option. Next time, I want a warning that the update with cause issues with an older model iPad. I want my general settings to stop showing me that annoying number one reminding me to update. I also want to go back to the moment before I foolishly updated.

Man, I wish copy and paste were working reliably for me.

I'd like to know the details of the copy paste issue to see if I have similar problems. I've copied a link from one tab in Safari to another, but maybe that's not a good enough test. I heard that the copy/paste function works again after a reboot, but only once. Since I've done my Restore, perhaps I won't have the issue; but it would be good to know. When you attempt to copy and paste, are you simply not offered the option to paste, or you have the option, but nothing shows up?

This certainly was an unexpectedly complicated, time-consuming upgrade. Even though I'm much better than I was, I will not be upgrading my wife's iPad 2, despite Star Traveler's claim that Apple is selling refurbished iPad 2's with iOS8 (I doubt they have iOS8 on them).

Here we are in October and Apple has done nothing to resolve software issues! I have 2 iPads a 2&4. Plus iMac, kids have iphones4-6...needles to say I love Apple in general but feel a lack of responsiveness to a huge issue that is adversely affecting so many customers is turning me off. My iPad 2 is not just slow with apps it lags when I try to turn from Landscape to Upright positions. I thought something was wrong with my particular devise but after reading everyone's shared problems I can clearly see it is the Update that is killing us. 😠

Oct 11, 2014 7:48 AM in response to GuessWhatDayItIs

I second this. After a Reset All Settings, my iPad 2 may still not be quite as fast as it was under iOS 7, but it has at least become functional once more. It's not a bad idea to do this regardless after upgrading to iOS 8. For example, I had an issue with Find My Friends that the reset fixed. It will, however, forget you wifi passwords, so be sure you know them before you do this.

There are other threads on the Apple forums about the copy and paste problem. However, none of them have an answer on how to fix it. One person started usin a 3rd party app called iClear (free) and I tried it. It''s better than not having any copy and paste, but Apple still needs to address the problem. With iClear you can see what is currently stored in the clipboard and you can also clear the clipboard. It usually works, but certainly not a solution to Apple's screw-up on iOS 8. Also, if you still have an iPad with iOS 7, I would STRONGLY advise against upgrading to iOS 8. Hope you get to read this before Star Tarveler deletes it.......

It's wonderful to see that iPad users are getting positive results from this solution. I know that others have gotten good results from some other suggested solutions here on this forum, too. There are obviously a variety of problems reported, and so it's to be expected that where one particular solution may not work ... another one may. It's about finding the right one for one's own iPad.

Glad to have you "back in the saddle" again!

Just got off the phone with Apple Level-2 and here's what worked for me:

1. Backup to iTunes (NOT iCloud)—be sure to backup Apps

2. Reset/Delete all content on device (so it's left "as new")

3. Set up as new—doN't restore from backup

4. Restore from iTUNES backup (NOT iCloud!)

5. Then re-add your content.

FYI - A backup to iTunes (your HD) is more comprehensive than a backup to iCloud although neither one includes the IOS itself.

SOLVED: IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:

I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.

Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.

THE FIX: FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device. Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!

To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now! :-)

Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.
