iPhone 6 screen easily scratched?

Have been taking EXTREMELY good care of my 6+, but the corners already have visible scratches. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have owned almost all versions of the iPhone, and now I have an iPhone 6...I have never had scratches show up like now. With the iPhone 5 I had zero scratches after 24 months. ZERO. After owning the iPhone 6 my screen is full of scratches, from just having my phone be in my pocket, sans anything else. The phone is alone in the pocket....

I am going to guess apple is no longer using Sapphire Glass. This is unacceptable.

OK......but Apple is using Gorilla Glass on iPhone 6. My two iPhone 6 screens have zero scratches and we got them on launch day. People who are having issues are not getting scratches on the glass. They must be having an issue with the coating on the glass. And I'd hazard a guess that it's a very small minority of the iPhone 6 population or this thread would be so much longer than it is.

Hi,

Your strongest point is "this is very minor (or non an issue) otherwise this thread would be much longer".

Let me disagree. Looking at number of sold devices, we may assume with a good probability that for many, iPhone 6/6+ is a very first apple device ever or since a while.

If such a person notice a scratch on the screen, he or she will think: "****, I was so careless :-("

But here, in this thread people share slightly different observation: "I'm so disappointed because Apple made the screen less durable and more scratch-prone"

Its just matter of having a point of reference.

Jarek

Valid points.

Also worth nothing, is that some of us are aware that it's just the coating, and it's not something we plan to ***** and moan about because a) the coating will wear off completely in a relatively short time anyway, and b) it's not an issue with use of the phone as it's invisible when actually using it, or unless under specific lighting conditions. I wouldn't have posted about it at all even though I am experiencing it, except for the fact that I had come across this thread before and wanted to add my phone's build date and information in case it was relevant to the people who do care about it or are looking to gather info about it.

There are probably a lot of people who have this issue who either haven't noticed it yet, or like me, are aware that it doesn't affect use/isn't visible unless you're trying to check for it... and that it will wear off completely inside 6 months or so. The people who are upset are just rightfully annoyed that Apple went from essentially an un-scratchable screen to one that can literally be scuffed by things you'd never imagine being able to do it. Cloth, paper, etc.

im also having the same problems just like you guys. I just dropped my iPhone 6 from the top of my desk and the entire screen just cracked! That's not even a 6 feet drop!!! I just found out that the iphone 6 was made with cheaper parts than the previous iPhones you can even tell from the quality of the screen on the iPhone 5s which is better than iPhone 6. Now I don't know what to do in regards to my new 2 months iPhone 6 with a crack screen. any suggestions? Thanks

"the coating will wear off completely in a relatively short time anyway".

I would have to disagree with this statement. When I noticed the scratch on my iPhone screen I rubbed vigorously for about 10 seconds with a cloth. Little particles formed, almost like a dust but when I wiped it away the scratch was still there in all it's glory.

"it's not an issue with use of the phone as it's invisible when actually using it".

Again I would disagree. The most obvious argument would be when watching a movie with dark scenes. Also whilst one scratch might be palatable, the fact it appeared after 10 minutes of use would imply that after 10 weeks, or 10 months of use the screen would be riddled with scratches. At that point there is a good chance they would be visible under most use scenarios.

Rubbing off the coating takes a lot of time and effort. You literally have to buff out the coating and it takes hours to do... With chemicals. Note, when the coating comes off, your screen will become a fingerprint magnet, you don't want that. There are 3rd party coatings you can apply after you've buffed out the coating (and the scratch with it). A simple cloth won't do it though, you'll have to strip the coating with something with some abrasive properties.

As for how long the coating lasts with normal use, my 5G iPod with one years worth of constant use still has its coating. However, others have noted their coatings going away within a year. This should be covered under warranty though if your coating goes away that quickly (under normal use).

Yeah... Relatively short time doesn't mean 10 seconds with a cloth. Relatively short time means months to a year depending on how often you (and what method you use in doing so) clean it and how it's used. For my 5s, that was just under a year with normal use and cleaning it a few times a day. And no, it doesn't attract any more finger prints than it did really (not that I notice) but I guess that will vary from person to person. And I'm betting it'll take a shorter time to wear off than it did on the 5s and previous models being that it's so easily scratched right out of the box.

The visibility of the scratch on the coating is actually dependent on the thickness of the coating itself. If the coating isn't thick enough, it won't be able to refract and reflect the light properly for it to become visible (regardless of how many there are). So thicker coatings will be more visible while thinner coatings will be less visible. This is going with the assumption that you haven't scratched the actual glass (which is hard to do as it's as hard as sapphire).

If you can see your scratch with the phone on (white backgrounds help this), it may be that the coating is too thick (manufacturing error). I recommend talking to Apple Chat and explain your situation to them. What you've been doing with the phone, how you take care of it, etc. and the fact that you are disappointed at the quality of the display.
