iPhone 6 screen easily scratched?

Have been taking EXTREMELY good care of my 6+, but the corners already have visible scratches. Anyone else experiencing this?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8

Me too, had my Iphone 6 for only 2 months and there were visible small scratches already which surprised me. I had 2 previous Iphones- the 2G and 4S which I both used for 3 years but still no scratches. Had a chat with Apple Care and told me its not covered by their protection program for it was already because the phone was scratchless when I got it.

Sounds right to me. Cosmetic-only issues are usually not covered under a warranty or protection program like AppleCare+, and user-damage isn't covered under warranty alone.

Is it impairing the performance of the device? If so, then you may be able to pay for a screen replacement ($129 USD + tax IIRC) or if you have AppleCare+, you can use one of your two damage incidents with the associated $79 USD + tax deductible.

Using AppleCare+ only makes sense to do if you want the extended warranty. Not for the accidental damage for a broken screen... I've done this math before... Since AppleCare+ will only cover you for two incidents at the reduced cost, I'm only going up that high.

  • AppleCare+: 99 (for AppleCare+) + 79 per screen = 178 for 1 screen replacement and 257 for 2
  • No warranty: 109 per screen = 109 for 1 screen replacement and 218 for 2
  • No warranty: 129 per screen = 129 for 1 screen replacement and 258 for 2

Now, if you do plan on replacing your iPhone 6+ (only 6+) twice, then you save 1 dollar. However, if you only replace it once, you lose 49.

Now, if you do plan on replacing your iPhone 6 at all, you'll lose money either way (69 dollars for 1 screen, 39 for 2).

With that said, if you're not doing it for the extended year of warranty, it makes little sense to get AppleCare+ just for the accidental screen replacement. Apple designs this so they make a profit, or at least breaks even. Don't get me wrong, an extra year of warranty at 99 bucks is not a bad deal, but if you're doing for accidental screen replacements only, it makes no sense to do.

I never suggested to get AC+ for screen-replacements only. If that's all someone is getting AC+ for (and deciding they will never use the extra 21 months of free phone support or the extra 12 months of hardware support), then it's not a good deal. However, is someone already has spent the $99 on AC+, then their options are:

A) Spend $109/$129 for a replacement screen (if only the screen needs replacing and there is no other damage to the device).

B) Spend $79 and use up one of their two incidents (whether it's just the screen that needs replacing or if Apple determines whole-unit replacement is required)

If you have AppleCare+, you have the above options. If not, then you only have Option A.

For me personally, I would also factor in how much time I have left in my AppleCare+.

If I've still got over a year left, I'd save both of the AC+ incidents.

If I had between 6 months and a year left, I'd use one of them and save the second. I'd want to save at least one incident for the last year.

If I was at less than 6 months, I'd use an incident, even if it was my last one.

I'd also factor in how long I have left until I could get a discounted upgrade from my carrier as well. If I'm less than 3 months from the upgrade, I'd use whatever incidents I had left. Some carriers/plans may let you upgrade sooner than the two year point. I'd also factor in if I had an older working unit as well. I might use up one of my incidents to save $30-$50, if I had a backup device. If my iPhone 6 needed service, I might use an incident anyways, since my iPhone 5S is in fine working order. If something else happened to my iPhone 6, then I have the option of paying for the service or switching over to my iPhone 5S for a while.

Everyone's situation is unique, and everyone needs to decide which option works best for them.

The AppleCare+ also waives the $29 support fee over the phone from Apple for two years, not just 90 days as normal. It also waives the out-of-warranty fee (non-damage related) for two years instead of one year, as normal. Since for an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus that's pretty high ($299/$329 USD + tax, respectively), it should almost be a no-brainer to get it. I've never needed the phone support from Apple, but I have needed the extra year of free hardware service.

very disappointed.

dealer says this can happen....well...

Yup, it can happen. Any mobile device can get a scratch. Use a screen protector and/or case in the future to minimize cosmetic issues.

Hi, everyone. This forum has been helpful. I've had my phone for just over a month and just noticed a hairline scratch on the screen. Like many here, I've kept it in my pockets with no other items; no drops; don't lay it face down on the screen. I know that this is just a phone, but we all paid good money for this so that there is already a scratch is a little disappointing.

After reading through many replies, it seems that the scratch may be on the coating. If the coating eventually wears out, will the scratch also wear out? It seems odd to me, but I've seen that explanation given before. Thanks.

I also have an iPhone 6 (4.7") and I've also experienced this too! There aren't any scratches but there is just a small minor dent on the top corner of the phone! I accidentally dropped it because I'm such a clutz, lmao and the dent appeared pretty noticeable. I dropped my previous phone multiple of times and it didn't appear a dent or left a scratch at all. I recommend to get a screen protector and a protective bumper or armour case since that'll cover the edges and the back ASAP!!

I just wanna add my voice to this forum. Ive never used a screen protector since iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 and I've never scratched my phone screen. I always take care of my phone but tonight I noticed a small scratch on my screen. I have no idea where it came from at first I thought it was just a smudge and I tried to wipe it offf thats when I realized it was a scratch.

heard anything from Apple?

Nope, specially when you have been extremely careful like that guy was...unless of course the phone lacks quality or the guy is lying...

Another one here. Beautiful 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus. Love it otherwise. Had it one month. Came to me with a dust particle under the camera lens. Looking at it under bright light now I see a faint vertical scratch. No idea how I got it. I am super careful with the phone - only microfibre to clean it and never dropped it. Prior iPhones had no scratches at all whatsoever even with heavy use. Will likely get no help from Apple so will just suck it up for now and keep an eye on it. But very disappointed. Clearly lower quality than previous builds. If I see more, I guess I get a screen protector...or screen repair...
