Devices cannot connect to iPhone 6 Hotspot

This is kind of a weird issue, I recently purchased the 4.7" IP6 from T-Mobile whose plan includes 5 GB of Tethering every month. When I setup the hotspot feature, it looks like my devices are rapidly connecting, immediately disconnecting, and connecting over again. This cycle continues for a few minutes before the devices seem to give up trying to connect. I have tried both my laptop and another phone and the iPhone 6 behaves the same way.

I have been able to tether via USB with only a few minor issues (it took me a couple hard restarts of the IP6 to get my laptop to recognize the devices). Neither my laptop or my other phone were recognizable with the IP6 bluetooth search, but it looks like that is a know issue.

Did I just get a dud? Anyone else experiencing weird tethering issues?

I know this is an old string, but this helped me today to resolve a similar issue, rapid connection and dropping of hotspot connection. In my case, it seemed to be a Window's 10 issue. My windows 7 laptop connected perfectly, but the Window's 10 did the rapid connect/drop. I was able to fix this by changing the wifi name (i.e., the name on my iPhone). I think the problem was that the original name had an apostrophe and a space (john's iphone). When I changed it to a name with only alphas and no spaces, the windows 10 connected perfectly.

I had the connect, rapidly disconnect, over and over until it timed out problem this morning for the first time (may have been the first time I'd tried to connect since the 8.2.1 update.) I'd tried all the troubleshooting steps on the page but none worked, including network reset and a complete restore. I read the above quote and thought to myself "well, it seems ridiculous that changing the password would fix it, but heck, I've tried everything else and don't really want to go to the Apple store." Of course, you can see the punchline coming, it worked! All I had to do was change the password from the initial randomly assigned one to one I picked myself and I was suddenly connecting to my phone again (in fact I'm writing this on my laptop connected to my phone right now.) Thanks rachelcklee! I'd have never thought to try that otherwise.

rachelchlee & squidbot, thanks for your responses.....

I've had the same problem tethering between iphone & laptop for quite a while but thought I'd try again to get it sorted after seeing some success on here.

I tried changing the hotspot password but for me that alone didn't work until I had done a reset of the network settings which also reset the name of the iphone and I was really surprised to see that this worked for me! :-)

Not sure if this will help you but I was trying to hotspot my macbook pro using usb (and/or bluetooth) to no success even though hotspot on my iPhone 6 said there was 1 device connected. Then, having tried everything else, I decided to TURN OFF wifi on the macbook and I was then instantly able to connect to the internet. This may not help you but may help others trying to tether their iPhone hotspot to their computer.

Hi, I am also facing the same issue with my Iphone 5, OS 8.1.3.

I don't why it is happening...Whenever I try to tether via. Wi-Fi it will not get visible for few minutes then I have to fiddle with my phone, like switching off and on. And then when it gets connected it will show "Limited Access" and again will not work. I have tried all possible combinations changing name, password restart etc.

It seems there is some glitch with the hardware which restricts the phone. Too much privacy is also annoying.

I have never used USB tethering coz it dint work at all.

Please resolve the issue asap or add it in the new upgrade.

This is exactly the same problem I'm having since I got my iPhone 6 Plus. I don't know if it's the hardware for the latest software update, my iPhone5 workEd flawlessly.

I was on the phone with AT&T for 25 minutes yesterday and nothing was resolved – they DID tell me it was a "known issue" and said they would call back after checking with the team but never did.

I've tried a combination of every suggestion made in this thread and nothing has worked.

Does Apple monitor these messages?

Hi, this may help for those who recently upgraded their phones.

I just recently upgraded my iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 Plus and just tried the personal hotspot this morning and guess what it does NOT work for my laptop, but worked for my new tablet. The difference is that my laptop already had my iPhone hotspot connection profile stored from my iPhone 5 days and my new tablet never connected to my iPhone 5 before. You now know what I am getting at right? just delete the connection profile on your device that previously connected to your previous iPhone and reconnect to the new iPhone and you should be just fine.

Note that I am using iOS 8.1.3, and my iPhone's name did NOT change (i.e. same as my previous iPhone).

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS SOLUTION WORKS FOR YOU!! 🙂

Some of these posts mention it but none call out explicitly what I just found (or I didn't read carefully enough to see it)

Bottom Line - apostrophes (and maybe spaces) in my iPhone name were the issue.

Your personal hot spot network is the name of your iPhone, right? If you have apostrophes in it - like I did - it causes issues (using windows 7). Unless it was random luck that after everything worked like a charm AFTER I changed my iPhone name to rid it of the apostrophe (and spaces to be safe) then that's a good first step to take while troubleshooting.
General -.> About -> Name

Make sure your phone name has no characters other than alpha numeric and perhaps a dash.

good luck. I'm happy my problem is solved as I need to tether for work tomorrow!
