After IOS 8 update, bookmark bar won't go away

After upgrading to IOS 8 on my iPad 2, in landscape mode in Safari, the bookmarks bar, now combined with links and "Reading List", won't go away. I believe it is supposed to go away when you select one of the functions, such as bookmark, so that the tab turns blue, then hit it again. It doesn't. I can turn it to portrait mode to make it go away, but I'd like to use landscape mode without losing a third of the screen to bookmarks.

Hi nofixedadress. You hide the side bookmarks by tapping the upper bookmark icon, next to the address bar. It is annoying that it doesn't disappear automatically after selecting an item, but that's how it works. If that doesn't help, please describe your exact problem, what you're trying to do and how it fails. Please include your device model and iOS version.

Apple knows what's good for you - how dare you criticizing their benevolent parental guidance? 😁

Jokes aside, I'm also a little bit puzzled that there's no option to choose between the "toggle on-off" setting in landscape mode and the fade out one as in portrait In Safari's settings. But there's actually some kind of workaround I'm now using most of the time in landscape mode:

When tapping the URL address bar your bookmarks will also show above the virtual keyboard as they do when Safari doesn't have any websites opened. As soon as one taps into that bookmark window to scroll or directly click a bookmark the keyboard disappears again. It may not be a perfect method, especially when bookmarks aren't organized in folders, because the top level bookmarks are displayed as rather largish icons. But those contained in a folder will actually display as a drop-down list (can be scrolled when having a large number of entries) similar to the normal bookmarks list. Once a bookmark has been clicked everything fades out and you're taken to the selected site. As my bookmarks are almost exclusively in folders such as "News", "Sports", "Tech" etc. I've come to appreciate this kind of bookmark navigation much more than through the standard bookmarks menu with its annoying behavior in landscape mode.

Completely agree with this. I waited until today to upgrade from IOS 7 to 8 thinking that by the time Apple had released two further revisions bugs and complaints would have been dealt with. The chnage to bookmarks requiring two actions to get rid of the bookmarks column is absurd. Does Apple really think anything can be read on the reduced screen space you get when the bookmarks column is there.?

Bugs I can understand. Only an idiot would do that on purpose. I'm beginning to think they are idiots since they keep moving buttons. Can there be any good reason to switch the bookmark button from one side to the other and then back again? Do they even think about what it means to people that have gotten used to it, especially older people.

I completed the upgrade yesterday and immediately noticed the same issue and also completely agree with all the comments in this post. Upgrades and newer versions are supposed to make things easier and enhance the overall experience, I see no value in moving buttons from one side to the other then requiring additional steps to complete simple tasks that should be automatic. I think it's time to rekindle this thread to get some action from Apple, this new functionality is absured!! Come on Apple, think it through!

The fix cited at the beginning of the thread does not work. In Settings>Safari there is no "Show Favorite Bar" option. I see "Favorites" and if I click on it, the only option is "Favorites" and it is selected. Unselecting is not an option.

I just want the Bookmarks window taking up 40% of my screen in Safari in Landscape mode to go away! I have a 6 plus with IOS 8.1.3.

Yes indeed this is definitely a BIG BUG!!!! I have updated my iPad I believe twice now thinking Apple will fix this or at least give us the option as to whether we want this "enhancement" or not. I like so many am sick of this problem. But as another poster here said, how dare we criticize mother apple. I think apple makes fabulous hardward but I wish it would run Android and then you would have a real tablet. But they got my money anyway but now I know better. If Apple doesn't fix this bug they won't see another dollar from me. But I'm sure they don't care.

So I will ask Apple nicely - Please mother Apple fix this bookmark bug - Please...................... 😠

THis is just stupid. Why isn't Apple responding to this thread? With each update, my ipad becomes less enjoyable. I just purchased a new phone and went with the Blackberry Passport - i love it. My choice was made partially by the continued slide in Apple quality / functionality.

i am nearing the time to replace my tablet, this one bug alone is enough to push me to Android. A 5th grade kid should be able to undo this and move my boomarks back the right where they belong.

I could not agree with your comments more. In this forum I was given a "work around" but just fix the bug. Apple could care less and yes these devices get more usless with each update. Android is my next tablet too. Apple doesn't listen and could care less when folks line up for days to get these headaches and we paid good money to be abused like this.

Good by apple...............

AN update to my original post... I am using Crhome now and playing around with Mercury. Chrome seems to be working quite well, very intuitive and most certainly a more enjoyable experience than safari. Now if i could eliminate safarii's icon.....

i Have to add that for years i have sung Apple's praises. As i mentioned early, my new phone is not Apple and i am very happy with my purchase. I am very disapointed that we are being ignored. I just loaded the latest ios and it is still broken. What a load.
