This isn't completely in reply to MarknMikel, but a few general observations
There are several valuable lessons to be learned from the iPad 2 / iOS 8 debacle.
1) While the iPad 2 is in more hands than any other iPad, it was at the very bottom of the compatibility list. I learned the hard way not to update iOS if at the bottom of the list -- iOS 4 turned my iPhone 3G into an expensive paperweight. When iOS 13 comes out and you are still rocking the iPhone 6+, wait a few weeks before updating and see what happens to the poor souls who rushed out to update their phone. If they are singing from the mountaintop, by all means update yours. If they are cursing Tim Cook's parents and tailor, don't update.
2) Apple hedged its bets with allowing iOS 8 on the iPad 2. If they didn't allow it, many users would've complained that they weren't getting all there goodies and benefits touted for iOS 8. If it didn't work well (as was the case for iOS 8), many of the same people would complain. So, they released it and waited for the uproar.
3) Apple took iOS 8.1.1 very seriously because they released it to beta testers. iOS x.x.x have NEVER been beta tested before. This says that they listened to the cries of iPad 2 users.
4) The fact that you spent good money several years ago in no way means that you are guaranteed infinite bliss. Were that the case, I'd try to shove OS X Yosemite on my Apple II.
I own an iPad 2 and did not update to 8. I won't update to 8.1.1 until I see several weeks of positive reviews.
Buying shiny gadgets is a gamble.
