Exchange mail account issues

iPad Air with iOS 8...

After installing iOS 8, I noticed contacts and email from a (Gmail) Exchange mail account are no longer in sync. In the mail settings for that account, I tried turning off contacts, then back on. Tried rebooting a couple times. I've even removed and re-added the account. I also cannot send (or receive) email on that account, I get a "Cannot Send Mail, An error occurred while delivering this message." when I try to send out a test message.

At this point the account appears to be added correctly, but I have no mail and no contacts now. I'm out of troubleshooting ideas.

Update: Previously, normal Gmail accounts didn't have the option to sync contacts, which is why I was using the Exchange option when adding my Gmail account. I store my master contact list on Gmail. Anyway, yesterday I realized when adding a Gmail account, the option to sync contacts now shows up. So, I deleted the Exchange account and can now use the regular Gmail account to do the same thing.
