This is for everybody. This is not a phone issue, it is a iOS issue. I had the exact same issues with my 5s and my brand new SE. So far apple has not acknowledged the problem. Why replace a perfectly good phone when the problems is not the phone. Yesterday I did at least four hard resets (my only sure fire cure). I use the earphone a lot in my noisy work environment with the following issues: 1> Hear the phone ring in the brand new Apple ear bud, answer the call and cannot hear or be heard. Pull out the jack, cannot hear on the earpiece. Hit speaker and suddenly it starts working, but poorly and with a horrible echo. 2> Finish a phone call on my ear bud, try to switch to incoming call. Dead air as above. 3> Listen to podcast on earbud. Try to answer incoming phone call as above. Dead air as above.

All the crap about aftermarket products and consumer errors is just Apple blaming the end user for their mistakes in the firmware/iOS/whatever. They need to 1> acknowledge this and 2> fix it!!

This is exactly what happened to my iPhone 6. Purchased brand new from Apple! Issues with hearing via headphones that were never consistent... eventually seemed to work alright for a while after fiddling with settings, then all of a sudden- no earphones working for anything, including music and also no sound without earphones unless "loudspeaker" was selected. An iOS update seemed to fix my latest issue... but I am dubious as to how long this more concerned about the intake problems I had. Seems like lots of people have had the same problems.

Hi,

I have the same issue, i have my iPhone 6 for about a week and this happened, the calls only work on the loud speaker the ear speaker stopped working, froze twice and voice to text despaired all the way. I did reboot, restore to factory settings and nothing changed.

I called Apple after waiting 30 min on hold someone finally picked up this line. They offered me an exchange that will cost me $31.00 and also put a hold in the amount of $700.

I have to say i have had Samsung phones up until now, when Apple released the iPhone 6 i figured let me see what people see in these apple iphones, OH DO I REGRET ORDERING THIS PHONE.

I usually don't complain much but here i go.

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! BAD PHONE DESIGN!!! BAD SOFTWARE DESIGN!!!

Its a pity to watch such a strong sophisticated company like Apple fall so much every year since STEVE JOBS is no longer with them.

I had the same exact issue! Apple does not cheaply make their devices, but yes sometimes they will have defects or issues. Some on apples side some on the users side. If you have dropped your phone recently or it has been jostled in any way, the connectors up in the earpiece could have possibly come loose resulting in no sound. If you are a "tech savvy" person like me this is an easy fix. To fix this issue, you just need to, open the phone take the screen off then the earpiece and make sure the connector right above the little speaker is clean and firmly connected. But if you are not exactly "tech savvy", then I would look up a disassembley/ reassembly of an iPhone 6 screen on YouTube. And if that's too complicated for you, then I would recommend taking the phone into a repair shop or expirienced friend to fix your iPhone. I did this and it worked like a charm hope it does for you too!

Ps: I know this question was asked in 2014 and it's 2017, but this should help people currently having this issue solve it.

SOLVED. I had this issue. I had no earphones handy. I gently inserted the plastic end of a ballpoint refill into the headphone socket. It would only go in about 5mm but straight away the volume message changed from headphones to volume. Happy days,...

What a load of bulls**t I am reading here about switching airplane mode, bluetooth, hearing aid enabled, voice memo, reset phone settings etc ......unbelievable!!

Nope not yet....

Its weird , today I was able to hear a few calls but then the phone would revert back to not being able to hear anything. The only way I can communicate is when using the speakerphone function.

Not sure maybe some sort of proximity sensor isn't working correctly like when I put the phone up to my ear the iPhone 6 doesn't sense it there and therefore doesn't think i have it next to my ear maybe??? I don't know......i just want the **** thing to make a decision whether its going to work or not....tired of playing around with it trying to figure out if i screwed it up in someway or not...

Im not finding out anything online or in these threads in the apple forums......so its looking more like I'm going to have to visit the apple store and get another one.....

WHen you try to adjust the volume, does it say ringer or headphones on the screen? If it says headphones, something is stuck in the jack and your phone thinks you have headphones plugged in. Speaker will work. use compressed air to clean it. Worked like a charm with my iphone 6 plus. Don't try to stick your headphones in then pull them out; could make it worse. Hopefully this will solve the issue!

Sep 26, 2014 3:06 PM in response to smjdel

To answer your question.....

When I try to use the volume it just shows the volume going up like normal.....and doesn't show the headphones.

Now i did update the phone last night to the new IOS 8.2 which seemed to help a bit......it seems like I'm able to hear calls again......just weird that an update would influence the speaker part....We'll see if it stays or not.....

I gotta be able to trust this thing will work when i need it...

Ill keep everyone posted....I haven't had any calls today so Ill see how it performs...

Sep 29, 2014 7:15 AM in response to Masterdiver77

Ok......

Now its back to doing the same thing again. Dials the call....but can't hear a darn thing. THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING !!

I need this thing for work and I can't trust it to be reliable. Looks like I'm heading over to the Apple store to see if a Genius can figure this thing out out.

I did get a warranty when I bought it through Verizon, but I don't know if I should take it to them? or the Apple store??

Id call to ask but......I can't seem to hear anything when dialing...

to be continued....

Have you read this thread 'cuz solutions have been given? I had the same problem yesterday (11/21/2014) and luckily was able to solve. This is one from "Smjdel" which explains the problem and gives a solution. This is what he wrote "....WHen you try to adjust the volume, does it say ringer or headphones on the screen? If it says headphones, something is stuck in the jack and your phone thinks you have headphones plugged in. Speaker will work. use compressed air to clean it. Worked like a charm with my iphone 6 plus. Don't try to stick your headphones in then pull them out; could make it worse. Hopefully this will solve the issue!..."

I actually applied air and also plugged in the headphones in and out a few times until I could I could see "ringer" on the screen. It seems to be a problem with quite some people so lets see if Apple comes clean and addresses the problem. I know exactly how you feel and it su...s. Good Luck!

Thank you mutlutimes that worked for me

while headphones are not plugged in, lower volume down to zero & phone registers earphones are not plugged in and works as expected

Long version

similar to others:

  • could not hear when you called someone.
  • could hear through speakerphone.
  • could not hear siri
  • toggle switch above volume would show headphones
  • used great light to confirm nothing in headphone jack
  • phone was purchased about 5 weeks ago and in use up to 1 week less.
  • to my knowledge, a headset had never been plugged into the phone.
  • headphone jack worked with a headset

What fixed it for me:

  • while i was in Settings -> Sound without a headset plugged in, I turned the volume all the way down with the buttons on the side of the phone, and could visually see by watching the ringer volume slider.
  • I then turned it back up towards halfway.
  • touched the ringer volume, could hear.
  • tried siri. could hear.
  • made a phone call, i could hear.

How I reproduce the problem

  • plug in a headset
  • unplug a headset
  • it's stuck on headset
  • turn volume down and keep turning it down, even if it is all the way down, until it switches to 'ringer' instead of 'headset' on the volume overlay

Confirmed again there is nothing in the port. It looks clean and shiny.

Hi all,

I am facing the same issue, can't hear any sound in speakers or in ear phones until i switch on and off the loud speaker. I encounter this issue just after 2 weeks of buying iphone6s plus. already replaced with new one, and this issue still persists. i am not sure any one in apple team is reading this and even trying to find the cause. i have already upgraded the os to 10.1 and no hope.

Kindly note:

  • When i don't have headphone attached the volume key pressing shows Ringer/Volume
  • when i have headphone attached the volume key pressing shows the Headphones.

So my phone don't have any issue detecting the Headphones and Speaker.

if apple team is reading this then please note; i have enabled my Diagnostic log to share with apple developers, so please if you can find the cause and fix it for me. i have no interest to keep replacing the phone, backup, restore and observe the issue again. i know this is just a audio routing technical glitch. but please try to fix this first in your next OS release.
