iPad Air since iOS 8: Apps not updating and downloading no longer possible. Fix?

This problem only really started in the past couple days. I can no longer update apps, cannot download books from the store in the books app and cannot download newspapers in my newsstand. Also, my Adobe reader for iPad open but shows a blank page for 15 seconds before closing and returning to my iPad home screen.

Previous to this, the first few days of iOS 8 did not give me problems, though I had not yet tested all of the above items but apps updated easily for first few days (until 22 sept). Is there a fix?

(A) Try reset iPad

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Note: Data will not be affected.

(B) Try reset all settings

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings

Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing will be reset

Amazing - deleting the WSJ app worked - I can download updates from the App Store again.

I also deleted GQ from Newstand but I don't have a subscription, though I do have one to WSJ. I also have Zinio and I didn't delete that - re-downloading all the mags would have bern a PITA.

BTW earlier this evening I also did the 8.1 update, which didn't solve the 'Cannot update Apps on iPad Air iOS 8.x' problem. In fact, I couldn't even download the 8.1 update from my iPad Air, I had to use iTunes on my MacBook Air to do the 8.1 update.

backround: I am the originator of this thread. Since I did a full factory reset on my iPad air, followed by re-synching with iTunes, I have had no issues whatsoever. I used to have WSJ app (no subscription) and after I deleted it, it did nothing to ease the issue on my iPad. Only the factory reset solved my issue and at the time, upon reset, I installed iOS 8.02 and never had an issue since. That was about 2 weeks ago now.

Last night, I updated both my iPhone 6 and my ipad Air via the wifi in my home but not using iTunes and was seamless, fast and no issues have arisen since the update.

good luck to all.

Hello all,

I thought you might be interested in the following. I received this email from the folks at FT (Financial Times). It seems WSJ is not the only app having issues and while this does not signify the same issues that appeared to plague the WSJ app (and personally, I never had a noticable issue from the FT web app), it does still indicate that it is not necessarily an app issue but rather an Apple issue, as evident from the comment saying it is an ios glitch and Apple is working on it. So do not be quick to blame the app in all cases. I could still be an ios issue that is merely brought to light by the app in questions;

Here is the email from FT:

We are aware you may be experiencing issues with the FT web
app after upgrading to iOS8, including freezing and jerkiness. To make your app
work properly again, please close and reopen it.
The issue is due to a glitch in the iOS8 software which Apple is working to
fix. We thank you for your patience in the meantime and apologise for the
disruption to your FT experience.
We recommend that you keep an eye out for further iOS8 updates.
If you have any further questions, please contact the Customer Service team via

I'm having the same issues. I was able to upgrade apps by connecting through my computer on itunes, but the ipad still won't download properly and stalls with evernote similar to what I read here about the problem with Adobe Reader. I have reset and then cleared the ipad and totally reloaded. Still major issues. This is not like Apple. I had hoped the 8.1 would have the solution, but no change. What can we do?

THe WSJ app has a new version released Oct. 14 which clearly states (with no fanfare or apology)

* Fixed a problem that would not allow apos to download from the app store

AND I PAID FOR A SUBSCRIPTION TO WSJ!!!

On the one hand, this is a HUGE app bug.

ON the other hand, iOS should not allow an app to have this large a negative impact on the system, regardless of any possible app. bugs.

This is a temporary fix. Spent an hour online with tech support ten days ago and they were stumped. Tried to restore system and install as new at their suggestion (not using backup - a pain), they were guessing. Worked for a few days. Then apple said to wipe and setup as new again, great way to use a device. Then on a hunch i instead deleted Chrome and that worked for a while. Now i deleted WSJ and its working again, for now. Seems to be issue with subscriptions or any download that gets stuck, blocks the queue forever. Only a problem on my ipad air, not iphone 6. same apple ID, different carrier.
