unable to update apps ios 8 family sharing

Im using an iphone 6 plus. My wife and i used to share and apple id but now with ios 8 i use my own id. i have a notification that i have 7 app updates available but it gives me an error when i go to download them. User uploaded file

I do have our apple id's linked for family sharing and i have downloaded apps that she has purchased with her id and ive downloaded on her device apps that i have purchased with my id. so I know the linking works for that but for some reason im unable to update these free apps.

Same here. Most of the apps that won't update are free. Previously, you would get a popup saying the free app would download in your own account. Now this. Hopefully this is a glitch.

I deleted one of the probllem apps to see if I could do a fresh download, but it won't allow that either. Oddly, there are some apps that will update, while others have this issue.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION!

So I called Amazon, thinking it had to do with their app saying it doesn't participate in Family Sharing. Amazon was clueless about the problem but tried very hard (even contacting Apple support while I was on hold), but they ended up transferring my call directly to Apple.

Apple is aware the problem can arise but isn't exactly sure why it happens. Their first suggestion was to reset my phone (turn off and on again). Since I was calling from the phone, I couldn't do that. Their second solution was to sign out of my Apple ID and sign in again. THIS WORKED! I was able to download each of the three apps that had been giving me the error.

In our case, it impacts both the organizer and other members.

FYI, you can leave the family and/or log out of the store separately.

  • Connecting to the family happens in Settings > iCloud.
  • Connecting to the store happens in Settings > iTunes and App Store.

Those of you who have tried this, could you clarify which of these you used when you "signed out"?

HaloGirl, it sounds like you did the first? I've been reluctant to log out and back into the family because I have read that apple has some limits and that this could get you locked out of the family. I am not sure if this is correct, or if the restriction has to do with exiting and re-joining the family (rather than logging out and into.)

Anyway, until I see some clarification, I don't want to tinker around with that option.

I initially went to iCloud Settings on my phone and left the family (I don't recall if there was a simple log out option), hoping that would break the connection that was producing the error. This didn't solve my problem, and I have no way of rejoining the family on my own; my husband will have to issue me a new invitation. We've already done this once before when we were trying to figure out how to get it set up properly, so I don't expect there to be a problem allowing me back in the family, but I won't know until this evening when my husband gets home.

Have you tried turning your device on and off or logging out of iTunes and App Store? These actions shouldn't have any negative repercussions and may fix the problem.

If nothing else, call Apple support. Amazon connected me directly but gave me the 800-APL-CARE number as a backup if I was disconnected. However, if you call, expect a long hold time.

dudewally, that's what I assumed, which is why I contacted Amazon first. Amazon was pretty lost on the topic, but I made sure to point out the family sharing issue (that they didn't have it enabled) to see if they would change it to possibly avoid these issues. However, my problem was fixed by logging out and back into my iTunes account, so it seems to be a fixable problem without the app developer getting involved.

Well, unfortunately, we haven't been successful in getting me back in the family. However, it feels more like a glitch than an Apple policy. My husband starts the process of inviting me, but it hangs after selecting my email address - he clicks "Next" and nothing happens. If it were intentional, there should be an error message. I will probably be calling Apple back tomorrow. 😟

@dudewally: Yeah, I noticed that some of them don't have family share enabled. Still a glitch, though. Even if family share is not allowed for an app, it should be possible to download the app if it's free or pay for it if it's nit. Right now, family share effectively blocks you from downloading these apps if someone else in the family owns it.

@HaloGirl, yes rebooted phone, logged out of store, etc. Did not help in my case, but thanks for the suggestions.

I think I've found a workaround, at least for free apps. Delete the free app that won't update. Then wait about 5 minutes, and then go back and re-download it.

The re-download doesn't work at first, but seems to reset after a few minutes.

Try it with a less important app first, in case it doesn't work and you can't re-download.

My husband found this on Apple's support (guess you have to know which words to use for your Google search):

"After you leave a family, you can join or set up a new one. However you can only switch to a different family group once per year." Leave Family Sharing

We're on hold with tech support to see if they can fix this for us since I only left the family to try to work around the app error. I'm hoping the worst-case scenario is I have to be the family organizer and add my husband.
